Subject: Short-lived '80s TV shows

Here is one of my favorites.
OTHERWORLD
Remember "Lost in Space," well this was Lost in Dimensions.
CBS, Winter 1985

In this episode we see that in the dimensional Zone the Sterlings have landed in, the principal hates rock 'n roll, but the kids love it, and so does a sleazy booking agent!

I actually remember Otherworld. I remember that intro for it well, but I was one of the many who did not tune in each week. Shame it did not last. Looking back, it looked like a good show
Here's one that was very short-lived. On the beloved sitcom Cheers, actor Dan Hedaya had a recurring role as Carla's slime ball ex-husband Nick Tortelli. In 1987, he was given the spin-off titled The Tortelli's that started as a mid-season replacement, and after only 13 episodes, was cancelled. I used to wonder if because of that failure, NBC had doubts about Frasier.

It didn't hurt Hedaya's career though. He's been in tons of films since, and even paid hommage to Cheers in the movie A Night At the Roxbury

Oddly enough, it lasted longer than the 2 sitcoms he had in the 90s: Drexell's Class and Madman of the People. I watched alot of TV in the 80s, but I do not remember The Slap Maxwell Story, though I've always heard of it since the 80s ended. It looked like it was a great show

Three's A Crowd (ABC, 1984-1985)
Picking up in the life of Jack Tripper where Three's Company left off, the spinoff sees Jack and his fiance, stewardess Vicky Bradford (Mary Cadorette), living in their apartment above Jack's Bistro. Vicky's rich father, James Bradford (Robert Mandan), doesn't think much of Jack, thus Jack versus Mr. Bradford was the shows main theme. In the last episode of Three's Company, Bradford buys the building housing both the couple and the restaurant from Mr. Angelino, dean of the cooking school Jack attended.
TV Land just ended the 3C series on their late night programming, and I, like a good insomniac, caught the final episodes. No sign of Three's A Crowd. They don't bother getting the license to run the series. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the studios didn't even have the tapes! TAC had nothing going for it other than John Ritter's talent, which, though strong, was not enough to carry the entire series. Here's an even more embarrassing factoid: According to IMdb, ABC canceled TAC to make room for Diff'rent Strokes, which was a basketcase by the spring of '85 and died an agonizing death after leaving NBC.
I watched TAC every week it was on no matter how dumb it was because I had a terrific crush on Mary Cadorette! She was Miss Connecticut in 1975. I don't usually go for beauty queens, but there was something about her...but the life of me I can't figure out what it was!

Intro paired up with its British cousin "Robin's Nest."

Oh my do I remember that one. It was a good attempt, but I didn't like Mr. Bradford on Three's Company. Robert Mandan is best known as the coniving sleaze ball Chester Tate on 'Soap', and it seemed like he always played that same character no matter what show he was on. But Vicky, she was a nice looker.

Crime Story
Highly stylized cops and robbers/mafia show, based first in Chicago and then Las Vegas in the early pre-Beatles era 60’s.
Great acting, stories, music, cars and clothing of the time period (it was after all a Michael Mann (Miami Vice) co-directed/produced the show so what else could you expect).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is5ofSHZWTM
The show had a lot of first time appearances for many up and coming actors, especially Dennis Farina, who himself was actually a Chicago cop before becoming an actor. It also had Andrew Dice Clay as an ongoing small character. Many of the other actors would later show up in many of the Goodfellas/Casino and other gangster-type films of the 90’s.

I never knew it ended on a Cliffhanger until I bought the complete series set on DVD. I was so angry it was a Cliffhanger.
They did that same thing with the sitcom Soap. I wanna know how it was supposed to end

JFTR, "Soap" ended on a cliffhanger by design, because it was a spoof of real soap operas. True to form, the central Jessica Tate(Katherine Helmond of "Who's The Boss?") appeared now and then on the show's spin-off "Benson", to semi-resolve the cliffhanger and show she was still alive... somewhere.
Not quite by design, "Benson" also ended on a bogus cliffhanger because the writers couldn't agree on one or THREE proposed endings. Benson and Governor Gatling were at each other's throats as the election drew near, and the final scene showed them restoring their friendship on election night, and wishing each other good luck while watching the returns. The winner was never revealed, but the writers say if ABC ordered an 8th season, Gatling would have remained Governor and Benson would enter the State Senate.

AGREED! I still can't believe that "Work It!" pile of crap(which was a complete rip-off of Bosom Buddies) ever even got on the air. And ABC was probably just as wise to drop that new "Charlie's Angels" after only a month. We don't want Drew Barrymore behind the camera(I heard she was Exec. Producer) if she's not also in front of it.

Ran for four seasons from 1985-1989, but only one season has been released on DVD.
I spent a few minutes searching for an accurate rendition (the ones I was able to find were sped up by a few percent to evade the filter; this is close enough for 00s work), but the holders of the copyright appear to have spent more money DMCA-ing advertisements for their own content off YouTube than it would have cost them to release the other three seasons. (The 70s prequel, Callan, is in a similar state - only the first two of its four seasons were released.)

Correction. He was on 'Good Morning, Miss Bliss!' in 1988 and 1989. Later on in the 90s, NBC did air 'Good Morning, Miss Bliss' episodes and re-branded them as 'Saved By the Bell: The Junior High Years' even though the setting from Miss Bliss was a totally different city than in Saved By the Bell lol

VOYAGERS!
(1 season -- 1982-1983 NBC)
http://www.posters555.com/pictures/Voyagers!-(1982)-picture-MOV_94528bde_b.jpg
Jon Erik-Hexum played Phineas Bogg, a time travel hired to correct history wherever it might go awry. Meeno Peluce plays Jeffrey Jones, Bogg's accidental teen sidekick from 1982. Each week there was a new problem to solve. Maybe they had to stop Napoleon from winning the Battle of Waterloo, or maybe they had to convince the Wright Brothers to have another look at their scrapped plans for the airplane.
I remember my school had a ton of promotional material from this program as the network was trying to market the series as an educational program, not just a sci-fi adventure. They had books, posters, decals, and the like. It sounded like a great idea with an endless source for scripts.
The thing is, I never watched it. I never watched it for the same reason most people didn't. It was on NBC at the same time 60 Minutes was on CBS. We watched 60 Minutes at my house and that was that...and I too would rather watch 60 Minutes. Maybe I would have watched it if they changed up the time for the next season, but they never got another season, and a great show went into the dustbin of TV history!
If Phineas Bogg would like to give me a lift back to 1982, maybe we can convince those TV execs not to schedule it opposite 60 Minutes!

Some small-minded TV exec in Britain thought that we could all do with a British remake of 'The Golden Girls' sometime in the early 90s...
Trouble was, 'The Golden Girls' was pretty popular here and rather than come up with fresh material, the remake basically recycled the original's scripts!
Thus, 'Brighton Belles' was pulled from the schedules after six weeks (and I can't even give you a screencap or a video taster, it seems to have been wiped from TV's collective memory!)

The good news about '80s TV unlike previous decades is that 99% of everything produced is still intact, unlike the '70s and before where wiping was commonly used to rerecord episodes, particuarly outside of Primetime. (For example the 1971 version of Password was wiped over with Richard Dawson's Family Feud). Tapes had also become cheaper by the early '80s in addition. Even local news broadcasts still retain just about all of their tapes from this era. The 1% is probably certain material by fledging cable stations that perhaps either was a late wiper or simply lost the tape at some point that very well may be gone. The only problem is for the scarce series to either get proper DVD releases, or subscriptions for an appropriate price. Soap Operas, for example, could be good for long marathon viewing via a small fee, since there is more ways to watch these shows nowadays. Still, there are many shows such as those here not only that haven't been run since their initial airing, not only never released on DVD, but also never uploaded online nor offered for streaming, and are somehow only found in the vaults somewhere that is only upon request.

The Ropers (Norman Fell, Audra Lindley) were great on 3C, but their volley of banter was limited. The Ropers could have been a great show with a little more character development. It had Jeffrey Tambor in it who's always good at playing a simpering, devious, icky guy!
I recall Joanie Loves Chachi being pretty popular for a short spell. I never watched it.

Were all 3 sisters ever on the show or was Katey just getting ready for Married With Children a few years later?

I vaguely remember Hooperman, one of the running gags was that he lived in a run down apartment with bad plumbing, and I remember one time he was taking a shower and had just lathered up his hair with shampoo and as soon as he did, the shower quit. So he got out, took the lid off the toilet tank, ripped the floating ball thing out and dunked his head into the tank. ;D

Yeah, I remember that. Plot-wise, the concept of two guys and a girl sharing an apartment was basically Three's Company in reverse, but for the season and a half it was on, it worked. Barely anyone remembers it because Stefanie Kramer went on to do Hunter, and it was replaced on Thursday nights by The Cosby Show(What else?).

GLORIA
(CBS/1982-193 -- Sally Struthers, Burgess Meredith)
http://www.crazyabouttv.com/Images/gloria.jpg
Back story: late in the All in the Family series, Mike Stivic gets a teaching gig in California. Gloria (Sally Struthers) and Mike (Rob Reiner) move out to San Diego ending their run as regulars on All in the Family. In 1979, Jeanne Stapleton (Edith Bunker) quits the show. All in the Family Ends in 1979. Carrol O'Connor (Archie Bunker) continues on a new show called "Archie Bunker's Place," the one about Archie running the restaurant with his Jewish partner Murray Klein. Edith Bunker is written off as dying at the end of AITF. Archie is left to raise their adopted daughter Stephanie (Danielle Brisbois) with the help from his niece Billie Bunker (Denise Miller), and Stephanie's rich aunt, Estelle (Celeste Holm). Billie starts dating Gary Rabinowitz, a liberal lawyer, and the son of Archie's lawyer. Rabinowitz becomes the new Meathead character. Then there are all the crowd at the bar, Harry, Barney, Mr. Van R, Jose, Raoul, and Veronica.
Jean Stapleton returned to the stage, her first passion. Rob Reiner followed in Carl Reiner's footsteps and went out to Hollywood to become a movie director. Both Stapleton and Reiner found their post-AITF careers highly rewarding. That left Sally Struthers as odd girl out. She wanted her own series. Weak idea, but that wasn't the problem. It was the way the went about the weak idea. On "Gloria" Mike and Gloria are divorced and Gloria moves back to Queens with young Joey Stivic. What happens to Mike?
If you watched AITF from 1971-1978 you got to know Mike Stivic as an earnest liberal with his heart in the right place He sympathizes with the radical activists and the dope-smoking hippies, but he isn't one of them. He wants to get his degree, develop his teaching career, and start a family with Gloria. However, in the ABP episode introducing "Gloria," Gloria Bunker-Stivic arrives in New York for Christmas without Michael. Where's Mike? Gloria reveals Mike went paranoid crazy about the end of the world is nigh and tried to force Gloria and Joey onto a hippie survivalist free-love pot-smoking commune and when Gloria refused, Mike ran off with the homecoming queen.
Gloria sobs into daddy's chest, "I don't want Joey to grow up like that. I want Joey to have a NORMAL life, etc. etc. etc."
Every fan of AITF knows Mike Stivic would never do any of that. Their back story is an insult to every viewer who got to know them as their favorite TV family in the seventies. So we all said, "To hell with it, we're not watching that dumb show." Besides, Gloria was the weakest character on AITF anyway. She didn't have talent or the charisma to take the lead role on her own show.
I've never seen an episode of "Gloria," and I don't ever want to.
Look at it this way. Suppose they wanted to make a spinoff of "I Love Lucy" and to ditch Ricky Ricardo, they drew up a back story in which Ricky fled to fight in the Cuban revolution and became a jungle sniper for Che Guevara and a spy for Fidel. I mean, come on, it's silly!
PS. Burgess Meredith was a wonderful actor, but I still wouldn't watch such a crummy TV show. Hey, Peter Boyle was awesome, but I'd slit my own throat before I'd sit through frikkin' "Raymond"!

Does anyone remember a show in the 80's on I think HBO where an older man would travel around the world and sample exotic food (like puffer fish sushi) and partake in erotic activities (like topless Japanees massage)? It was kind of like the No Reservations show today, but the man was older and it was more tongue in cheek usually doing things as an excuse to show boobies. I don't think it was a running series, but it seems to me they did have yearly shows. I used to love sneaking up and watching those shows back in the 80's. Be curious to see them again.

Actually, Max may not know, but Marcia Strassman was replaced after the pilot by Mary McDonnell(Dances With Wolves). And most people will recognize the head nurse as actress Conchata Ferrell, 'Berta' on Two And A Half Men! That was the late great Lou Rawls performing the theme song.
As for Misfits Of Science, the leader was actually the son of Rat Packer Dean Martin, but his career did not last long. He was lost in a plane crash around 1988. The tall black dude found more success in the movies as both the Predator and 'Harry' of Harry And The Hendersons.

The two series were completely different, even though Clooney was in both. The first, he played a hunky playboy orderly. The second E/R, he played a hunky playboy doctor. Totally different. :P The first was mostly a comedy, Elliot Gould was more the focus as the doctor on call, named Dr. Sheinfeld. Oddly enough, Jason Alexander was also on the series as hospital administrator, Stickley. He must like things that rhyme, (Seinfeld/Shinefeld) :D Anyways to distinguish between the two series there is the ever important "/" symbol. The first series had one, the second didn't. ;D They both took place in Chicago; E/R at Clark Street ER in Chicago. Although the later series called it Cook County General (as I recall).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nk-7VvZUPFY
"Mr. President" actually managed to last 24 episodes, but I have yet to be able to find any other clips of this show anywhere. It was one of the shows in the original primetime lineup for Fox.
I think I might remember this one. ???

Taken from Wikipedia:
Automan is an American science fiction superhero television series produced by Glen A. Larson.
It aired for only 12 episodes (although 13 were made) on ABC between 1983 and 1984.
That would be an interesting show to watch. Doesn't look like it was ever legaly released for home viewing though.

Glen A. Larson. As I recall, he had a lot more success as creator of Knight Rider and co-creator of Magnum, P.I.. Automan was cool in that he could basically create any thing he needed with the little 'cursor', Walter included in his program. Personally I think the "Auto-chopper" was the coolest, but he could create disguises and whatever else would be handy. I even remember that anything he saw he could record somehow, and play it back for Walter or the girl on his front panel(like where Superman's S would go). I would not mind seeing it again, or at least see it updated for the 21st Century.

My Two Dads ran for 3 full seasons, from 1987-1990. Not so short lived really.
I mentioned Automan in page 2 of this thread. The UK is releasing the complete series in July 2012. It gets regular reruns on the Sci-Fi channel there.

I loved Square Pegs because I was 13 when it premiered (just a few years younger than the characters on the show so I could relate to all of the wanting to fit in and being liked and all) I was so mad when it got cancelled, it was a really funny show!
I don't remember what year it was on but does anyone remember a sitcom called One Of The Boys? I think it maybe went one season (or less than that). It starred Dana Carvey before he became big on Saturday Night Live and also a then unknown Nathan Lane and Mickey Rooney as Carvey's grandfather. The basic premise was Carvey and Lane were college roommates and for some reason (I forget) the granddad (Rooney's character) moves in with them and (supposedly) funny stuff starts happening with these two young guys dealing with a much older man in their lives. I think it's funny how this show is never mentioned whenever Carvey or Lane gets interviewed. I don't remember much about any episode so I guess it wasn't that funny. But I do remember that I did watch at least a couple of the episodes when it was on.

I don't think so. It was on Global TV in Toronto. I think it was on in 1982 and it was followed by Size Small Ranch and Size Small Island in 1983 and 1984.

I remember TPOMS. It was kind of "Superboy" show. Star (Peter Barton) is a space alien who happens to resemble a good-looking American high school senior. He's a prince on his planet, but the royal family has to split when the evil people take over their world. On Earth he has super powers and gets into all kinds of adventures fighting various bad guys. If I was high school student with super powers, I'd use them to get laid, but Matthew has higher callings. Louis Gossett, Jr., who had just played the hard-ass drill sergeant in "An Officer and a Gentleman" plays Walt Shepherd, Star's guardian angel of sorts from home who gets a gig as a science teacher at Star's high school.
It was a fun show, but it didn't last. I think they made 22 episodes between 1982 and 1983.

On a similar note to Tales of the Gold Monkey, there was another show that tried to capitolize on the Indiana Jones craze called Bring 'Em Back Alive. It starred Bruce Boxleitner and ran a few episodes short of a full season during 1982-1983. Like Gold Monkey, it was cancelled due to low ratings

I taped an episode back in the day - I loved it too. It must've been shown internationally as I'm not from the US.
Incidentally, the show's premise was taken for a UK game show called "All Clued Up" which lasted from 1988-91. I used to love watching that too with the "dreaded stinger". :D
