Subject: "Without the Internet, I never would have found these great 80s songs!"

Written By: whistledog on 02/22/12 at 8:43 pm

If you're like me, you probably have discovered some 80s songs that you never knew about, and have since adopted as some of your most favourite songs.  What are some of them that you really enjoy, but you never knew about prior to the Internet?

I always enjoyed those one hit wonders that groups only made one hit and then that was it.

Ok, but what are some of them ???

I have so many of them it's so difficult to mention them all.

There's lots of room in this thread ::)

Tons of songs!  Many of them because of the "Obscure Songs" thread on this forum.

It's not just individual songs, for me, I've "discovered" whole discographies I never knew existed but became a big fan of because of the Internet.  A few bands I found on the Internet I ended up buying their vinyl records off eBay.

Australian Crawl is one.  I went from never hearing of them before to owning four of their albums plus Guy McDonough's posthumous solo album.

I hadn't heard a song by Running Wild until a YouTube metal channel I used to subscribe to until he got pulled started uploading their songs.  I've since downloaded 4 of their albums and will probably get more.  Funny that YouTube would pull the uploads when they can lead to people like me legally buying their back catalogue.

Sometimes, it cuts both ways.  Sorta the opposite of metal, but it's also sorta the opposite of legally buying the music: if it was illegal for the band - or your local music retailer - to sell it, and in the late 80s, that translated to (zomgwtf?) it must be illegal to own it.

Which meant it must be really cool :)

Even as early as the early 90s, it was impossible to find a 12" of the original 1987, because I was driving a car the only time I heard The Queen and I on college radio and couldn't record it to tape, and the originals had been...

...burned, and nobody who still had a copy was selling, even in the record shops.

Sure, I had a 12" of the 45 edits, which was the "legal" version of KLF's "1987".  And was fun.  But it's not the same as the track I remembered.  Without thousands of dollars worth of equipment even if you could get the sample sources listed on the back jacket of the '45, there was no way to hear the original.

Which is why the original vinyl is still worth a few hundred bucks for sheer rarity and nostalgia value.  I still don't have the original vinyl.  But when MP3s first came out, I might have done questionable things, and if I saw a familiar name, I'd probably have called in to work, told them I was taking the day off, and downloaded it at 14.4kbps.  And Watched.  Every.  Kilobyte.  Download.

Now, of course, the music is now available in seconds with any random query.  But 15-20 years ago, obscure 12" remixes that had been recalled and incinerated as the result of a lawsuit, well, that was just the awesomest thing since awesome sauce.

I was really just referring to people who start channels on YouTube where they upload songs.  YouTube will eventually delete their account for copyright infringement and that's understandable; but those uploads also help promote the music.  They have the artist and album name with a photo of the album.  People like me might listen to it and think, "Wow, they're pretty good.  I'll go to Amazon and download this song and maybe check out their other stuff."  Sure, there will be those who will convert the YouTube track to an mp3 and not buy it legally if they don't mind the diminished quality of the recording, but the uploads also get the music out there for people to hear and maybe become new fans.

OK, fell in love with a new '80s song today!  I was listening to The Dugites first album on Spotify, and this song came into my life and my mp3 player.  Love it!  This is the only video I can find on YouTube and it is VERY LOUD, so, if you want to check it out, you may want to adjust the volume.
