Subject: Halloween Horrors!

Written By: moycon on 10/16/11 at 11:14 pm

Halloween is just around the corner.
Curious what 80's horror flicks did you guys like back in the day?
I'm a huge horror genre fan and back in the 80's I couldn't get enough.
Probably my favorite at that time was Return of the Living Dead.

Some other flicks I fondly recall at that time....

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (This movie was unrated when released, you HAD to be 17 or older which we weren't so we snuck in!!)
Poltergeist (A PG rated movie that was pretty dang scary at the time)
Halloween 3 (Most people hated this one, I loved it, always have)
Creepshow (Another one of my favorites. We watched this one last Halloween!)

I could go on and on there was so many good horror flicks in the 80's. What are a few of your favorites?

I'm not a fan of horror films now (too old, my heart can't take the heavy drama anymore ;D)

But I did enjoy Poltergeist. Another one I liked was "Am American werewolf in London", and "Nightmare on Elm Street"

Poltergeist was not a horror flick  ;D

I'm a huge fan. Madman is one of my favs.
Friday the 13th, prom night, nightmare on elm street (well maybe not the second one)
Oh and halloween 3 season of the witch....wait that was a comedy right?
I could list a ton more but I'm tired.

Poltergeists are a type of ghost to be sure, but when your movie about them adds scenes of a person ripping bloody chunks of flesh off his face down to the skull, a swimming pool full of corpses and you include  the evilest looking killer clown maybe of all time, not to mention a hungry tree that eats children then I don't see why it wouldn't be considered a horror flick! (And a darn effective one at that)

I dunno, I think I would consider Poltergeist horror.  :-[  I liked it alot, along with the Nightmare on Elm Street series.  I like an actual story, not just gore.

Even the Faces of Death series were "fun" the first time around.   ;D

Evil Dead 1 & 2

Creepshow 1 & 2

Christine

Gremlins

Night of the Comet

Cat's Eye

Fortress

The Hitcher

The Lost Boys

Killer Klowns from Outer Space

The Blob

They Live

Phantasm 2 (although I liked Phantasm 1 better but it was 1979)

Me too, maybe it's not "horror" enough for snozberries, but it scared the hell out of me!  I would never watch it again ( I do have a faint heart, now that I'm older)

When a family's home is haunted by a host of ghosts, it can only be a horror film.

Back on topic....

Yesterday we watched an old Hammer House of Horrors episode title Children of the Full Moon. I got the complete series on DVD many years ago.
These were short horror stories shown on TV in Britain in the early 80's. Later they were brought to the US as part of Elvira's Midnight Madness VHS line.
The series was not a success which is too bad. We really enjoy them a lot.
The series appears to be out of print, but used copies can be bought on Amazon and eBay fairly cheap.

Another horror flick I loved as a young lad was technically released in 1979, but didn't make it's way to the US until 1980.
The Italian living dead flick Zombie!
I love that movie so much I even have a high quality mask of the zombie that used to be on the cover of the old 80's big box VHS version. Heck I have the big boxed VHS version still!

Sadly I'm not familiar with any of those.

I can't believe I forgot to mention My Bloody Valentine and Sleepaway Camp

I was looking at a list of 80's horror films and the Hitcher (C. Thomas Howell, Rutgar Hauer) was on it. It was a bit bloody but I always thought if it more  as a thriller than a horror flick..

Another list had White Dog, excellent flick but more drama/social commentary than horror

I never really liked gore horror I was more a fan of comedic horror as in April Fool's Day or old time Sci-Fi / Horror / Thriller movies
as in Fiend Without A Face. I guess the only gore horror I like is the first Halloween and the first two Hellraiser movies.

Others I like:

The Day Of The Triffids
Gargoyles (Made for TV)
Anything with Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney or Bela Lugosi
Return Of The Living Dead
Inferno (Dario Argento)
Murder Rock: Dancing Death (Lucio Fulci)

Oh one of the more painful movies (as in painfully bad) was the tool box murders. It was disturbing as all get out. Poorly acted, vile and disgusting. One of the few films I actually had to turn off for being to much for me.    ::)

I watched part of Cujo the other night...it wasn't scary but for me it was the idea of being stuck in a small, sweltering car with no way out and no water.  I was almost hyperventilating as I watched it.

I haven't seen The Serpent and The Rainbow in forever...I didn't get it either.  Maybe I need to watch it again.

One more thing about Cujo...one day I went outside and there was this stray dog, it was a dirty, matted St. Bernard. I made my kids go inside until it was gone.  ;D

While I never saw these two in the theater, but first caught both of them on TV, my two favorite horror films from the '80's, and (IMHO) the two best vampire films from the '80's . . .

"Fright Night" (1985)
"Lair of the White Worm" (1988)

I saw Serpent and the Rainbow in the theater and loved it. I've always been a sucker for zombies and that movie while not a traditional zombie flick was pretty interesting.
Been years since I've seen it, but still remember the climax..."I wanna hear you scream!!!"

I'll add the remake of The Cat People. When I saw it on HBO back in the 80's I liked it because of all the nudity. Flash forward to a couple years ago when I bought it on HD DVD. This was a flick that was panned and bombed back in the 80's. Most fans of the original saw the new movie as perverse and disgusting. It's actually a pretty well done, well acted, well written (if indeed a bit perverse) horror flick.  I only wish it had been a success back in the day.

I think any horror movie is scary if you watch it alone. Especially when you're all alone in your house.

Sister's going on a date. Brother is hanging out with his friends. Dad is off at work. And mom is off at the market with the baby along with her.  :o

Now THAT'S scary!

Candyman...  that movie sorta creeped me out
waxworks - never will go to a wax museum (and House of wax solidified it)
Puppet master - hate freakin puppets, marionettes, or any other freaky doll like thing
Leprechaun - goes with above (and it may be a later movie than 80's)
Howling - watched it for the nudity in my early teens (close to pron as I got  :o)
Silver Bullet - not really scary - but hey it had Cory Haim
Chucky made me laugh... found a doll at a garage sale, somewhat similar (it was a girl doll) - My girls wouldn't let me buy her (thought she would be a great Halloween Decoration)
SQUIRM - the music/noise can set you off though
Motel Hell - Gotta love it!
Terror Train - who didn't like Jamie Lee Curtis

and cause I have no idea when it was made, but who can't love it  BOOB  (movie about a killer, monsterous, detached breast - Horror of horrors)

It's surprisingly effective although the special effects which weren't all that great even at the time haven't aged too well! LOL Still a fun fright flick.
