Subject: There was this one PBS special...

... that I saw in the mid-to-late 80s. I don't remember who hosted/narrated it, but it was an older, dark-haired woman. It featured summaries and some entire clips of songs and musicals through the ages. There were a couple of clips from "Show Boat," the one with Paul Robeson in it, and a fantastic performance of "Fascinatin' Rhythm." There was a brief rendition of "Cleopatra" that had me in stitches. And the hostess herself gave a quick little run-down of "Does the chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost over night?" that the audience seemed to enjoy. Oh, and they also did a clip of "We're havin' a heat wave, a tropical heat wave. The way that she moves, the thermometer proves that she certainly can... can-can!"
Having no idea of when it came on, who was in it, or who many of the performers were has made this show nearly impossible to track down. I'd love to see it again, but except for my memories of it, I have no proof that it even existed. :)
Does ANYONE else out there remember seeing this one, hour-long (I think) special? Or am I just imagining the whole thing? It aired in the 80s, that's all I know.
Thanks to anyone who can help me find it! I'll sing a very special "Show Boat" song in your honor.

Sounds like one of the many versions of "That's Entertainment" Not sure if they are what you are looking for, but I have seen them on PBS.
