Subject: Rubiks Cube
Written By: moycon on 09/22/11 at 11:04 pm
So I notice they still sell these on Amazon.
I have a Rubiks Cube that I found years ago when I was in high school. It was missing a few stickers and I was considering picking up a new one for 80's night!
As a youngster, when Rubiks was HUGE I never had a standard one. I had a mini one, and I had a knock off that was an orb, not a cube.
Never could solve either of them. Most I ever got (without taking them apart) was 2 sides.
Just curious who here had a puzzle cube back in the day, and who still has one today? Were you ever able to solve the puzzle?

Had one, although I'm sure it was a cheap knock-off. Never was able to solve it. I think I got one side done. Someone I knew started peeling my stickers off, but I hated that 'cause it was cheating. (And the stickers never did stick right after that anyway.)
I bought another knock-off from the country store/gift shop at Cracker Barrel restaurant a couple years ago. But I lost interest in playing it pretty quickly.

I had a knock-off cube back in the day. In the late eighties someone showed me how to solve it, but i was drunk at the time and couldn't do it sober!
My daughter was given a proper cube a couple of years ago. We looked up on-line how to solve it, but can only do it following the instructions

Interesting.
I'm fairly decent at puzzles.
Slide puzzles I can master and have several.
I can get one side of a Rubiks in a very short time frame with no prob, but I have yet to figure out how to line up other sides while doing it. There is a middle piece color that is consistent, so I suspect it has something to do with that. Haven't really ever seriously tried I guess. I do know I had fun just fiddling with one while talking last weekend during our 80's night. Would be awesome to talk and fiddle and solve while talking to someone! LOL
I might have to look online and get some hints.

I never thought about looking for a solution online... I've gotten close to solving mine but never really could do it. Best I could do was, i think, three sides.

Heh heh...there was no going online in 1982! They did have how-to books.
But...if you solved the Rubik's Cube, you got to do what? Scramble it and do it all over again. The whole thing struck me as rather pointless!

I had forgotten about the triangle ones. I got one of those for my birthday one year. I also had a little mini keychain sized one and a keychain sized rubik snake. I used to collect keychains and was always looking for unusual ones.

I went to Wal Mart and bought one today. They are around $10 and seem looser than the one we used to get as kids and would have to "break in"
I looked online for the orb one I had as a kid. Don't see any for sale! I wonder if they are rare? Wish I still had it.
I remember the triangle ones (never had one myself) but had forgotten about the Rubiks Snake until you mentioned it bookmistress4ever!
Never had one but I had friends that did.
I also found another old Rubiks puzzle from the 80's I had forgotten called Missing Link.
There's are several eBay auctions for one, including this one that has a bunch of old puzzle games!

If you never solved it yourself, you could always build a robot out of Lego to do it.
It took 30 years, but the robots are now solving cubes slightly faster than the ten-second times being recorded by the world's fastest humans.

we made one once. A dinner lady at school was forever boasting about how she could solve the cube no matter how muddled it was. I could take my cube apart and rebuild it, so I rebuilt 'solved' and then put one corner in twisted. Then muddled up the cube. She had it for nearly a week before giving up on it. She also stopped boasting after that!

I still have my original real Rubiks cube. Long ago some stickers and centers fell off and I fixed them with paint. I also have a couple knockoffs. I could never figure it out more than 5 full faces without the cheat book (which I found in the mid 90s).
The link the rings and unlink the rings puzzles... Rubiks Magic. I believe I still have mine in storage. I found them to be much easier than the cube. It took me maybe a couple months each to figure them out. Then I learned to do it as fast as possible for a talent show at school. Something like 6 seconds for one and 12 seconds for the other. The small one was link the rings, the large one was unlink the rings. Some other kids also had some knockoffs or something of the small puzzle, they had green and yellow diamonds I believe. But I was the only one with the large puzzle. I was so leery of letting anyone try the puzzles because they were so touchy, if you flipped a panel the wrong way the fishing line would break and the puzzle would be toast.

The Rubik's Cube fad hit when I was in the 4th or 5th grade and lots of us brought them to school. This one particularly dorky kid would smugly announce, "I know how to solve the cube," and he would proceed to scramble his cube and then unscramble it in the exact same order until it was "solved." He kept doing this until finally another kid snatched his cube away from him, scrambled it really good, and then handed it back to him and said, "Solve it now." ;D

I've never solved even a single side unfortunately. Also, after many years on some cubes the stickers start to peel off and get ugly like mine has, and that was only purchased in 2000! At least I've never cheated, otherwise the stickers would have been in even worse shape.

Robot Chicken parodied it, emphasizing Rubik's voice(which has been described as annoying, they amplified it more).
:D :D :D
Admittedly, there are other cartoons that I'm amazed even got green lit. It's not surprising that they would do a cartoon based on the Rubik's Cube(a lot of cartoons in the 80s seemed to born out of toys lines, not that that has changed too much today), even though I found it funny.

How about Rubik's Ball?

Robot Chicken parodied it, emphasizing Rubik's voice(which has been described as annoying, they amplified it more).
:D :D :D
Admittedly, there are other cartoons that I'm amazed even got green lit. It's not surprising that they would do a cartoon based on the Rubik's Cube(a lot of cartoons in the 80s seemed to born out of toys lines, not that that has changed too much today), even though I found it funny.
Yeah, I remember back in the '80s there seemed to be cartoons based on toys. :D
But really, how many episodes could you come up with based on a puzzle cube?!

You know you are old school if you were able to solve the Rubik's Cube ...
... by peeling off all the stickers and putting them back so it looked like you completed it.

Yes. I put them back and the puzzle was solved.
After taking it apart a couple of times it was a little loose but I looked smart. ;D

I think there are a few set ways of solving it but they are very hard to remember. I've only ever gotten two sides at one time.

I have a very small Rubik's cube and every now and then I try to match all the colors. The difference with this smaller one is that the colors are painted on...so I can't cheat and take out the stickers like I did in the 80's. This one HAS to be solved the correct way. I'm still trying to! :-[

The Rubik Cube keychains have the stickers. So do the new smaller Rubik Cubes.
