Subject: Toy identification

Written By: Dave on 08/29/11 at 11:36 pm

I need help from anyone that knows their toys.  When I was a kid, I had this toy that was an absolute favorite of mine.  It was a plastic, battery-powered robot that was mostly clear with color lights and buttons.  It's head would move and if you pushed the right button on him, he would say "Hey dude, what's up?!" or something like that.  I know there was more to him, but unfortunately that was about 20 years ago and I don't recall what else it did.  I think there was Buddy somewhere in his name, but once again I have no clue.  I've searched everywhere on the internet but to no avail.  In a perfect world, I'd be able to find one to own again.  Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know, but the phrase led me here (you'll want to click on that link for some similar robot toys), which set me to wondering.

Could it be Toy Story's Mr. Mike?  (and/or Playskool's Rockin' Robot)?

There appear to have been two versions of this toy, the Rockin' Robot 6-button one based on cassettes, and the Mr. Mike featured in the video, which has four buttons (not six) on the top of the device, and appears (judging from the review) to use a set of digital samples from the movie "Toy Story" that can be randomly played back depending on which button is pressed.

I got excited when I read the Rockin' Robot name because that sounded familiar but as I looked into it, that's not the right robot.  The one I remember actually has arms and I believe treads for legs.

Man still nothing.  X2L definitely looks familiar, but not quite it.  I seem to remember the robot I'm thinking of wearing a plastic ballcap.  I'm starting to wonder if it's from the early 90's or something.

Try this one ^

It could also be some unknown brand sold at a flea market or something.

I got it!  I spent the last hour in class searching again and my sister helped me out and we finally found it.  The toy was called My Pal 2 and was around late 80's/early 90's.  Thanks for the help everyone.  Looks like I'm ordering one tonight.

Congrats on finding it!  My Pal 2 came out in 1991, and here he is for the benefit of any future searchers.
