Subject: things from the 80s that have never stopped being popular?

Written By: hollyweirder on 05/28/11 at 7:23 pm

there are quite a few things from the eighties originally that have actually never died (of course, you can say that about any time - Christianity is from the 20s and 30s AD and is still popular  ;D  )

this isn't counting things that fell out of favor some time in the nineties and became revived.

*bon jovi, still huge and sell out concerts, actually have more young fans than you would think too
*the simpsons, actually making something of a comeback relative to the early 00s which were a real slump for the series
*my little ponies

Actually that did go out for a while in the 90s. Or at least it wasn't as obvious.

Also I'm pretty sure it started long before the 80s.

The Thriller dance (circa. 1983/1984). People seem to still like it, even in 2011!

The Curly Shuffle.  I do it alot at home because of the smooth surface my hardwood floors provide.  In a social situation it's best when foisted upon an unsuspecting crowd - board meetings, company Christmas parties, &etc...

Star Wars Episode V and VI.

Back when they were popular, you could just say 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi', but now it's not so simple.  Fans still love 'em, and Spike TV still has the Star Wars marathons every now and then.

Or simply "empire" and "jedi".  Everyone knew what you were talking about.  Jay calls them that in Mallrats...

-CDs are much less popular now then they were in the late '80s-early '00s, when the rise of MP3s ate away their share. They are the new "8-tracks" to today's youth.
-The Internet didn't become popular until the mid-90s!

CDs are still in use-not just for music but also for data. Maybe not as popular with music but they are still very much a part of everyday life for many people.

As for the internet, it may not have gained popularity until the '90s but it was in existence in the '80.

So, I stand by my statement!

CNN was a backwater on cable.  Only a few geeks watched it.  It was regarded much more like C-SPAN.  Then came the Gulf War in 1990, which changed everything.  CNN was suddenly popular and so was the 24-hour news format CNN pioneered in the '80s.  Then we got FOX, CNBC, and MSNBC.  Now you have news bimbos sitting around all day with really nothing much to say!

Family Sitcoms

What channel are you watching?  Family Sitcoms dominate maybe 5% of what's on TV today

"I Love Lucy," "The Honeymooners," "Leave It To Beaver," etc.  The family sit-com was goes as far back as the history of popular television.  Interesting to note its low ebb today.

It's not as good as it used to be but a lot of people do watch the black family sitcoms such as Meet The Browns and My Wife And Kids are a few.
