Subject: Any love for the early 1980s music?

Any love out there for 1980-1982 songs?
You know, after '70s Disco, but before MTV, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" all took off.
I guess in Spring of 1982 we were all in our "Whip It" phase...

Here's one that was ground breaking for the early 80s in North America ...
A cover of Lesley Gore's classic It's My Party by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin. They were a British duo and this was the early new wave sound in England that was just beginning to make an impact in North America.
It only reached #72 in the US, but it was a #1 hit in their native land and also rose to #13 in Canada

Not sure whether it was groundbreaking...more like an opportunistic attempt at keeping up with things!
They weren't newcomers either...both were in a 70s progrock group called Hatfield And The North, who were critics' favourites, but didn't sell much...
Meanwhile, Britain was just shaking off the last traces of disco in 1980, before everything mutated into 'club' music...here's one from the previous year which took ages to creep to #1...

Great songs from 1980-1982 everybody!
For me, 1980-1982 began with songs like Gary Numan's "Cars" (Winter 1980), and ended with Joe Jackson's Steppin' Out (Fall 1982).
It seemed that after that point the '80s changed, music wise that is, then it was all MTV.
Even Michael Jackson had some of his best songs in 1980, all from his "Off The Wall" album.

I was saying that because most people only know her for "Let's Hear It For The Boy", and that's unfortunately because she had more hits. I feel like she doesn't get the credit that she deserves. The same goes for Teena Marie. They only know her for "Lovergirl".

When I was 3 years old (in 1983), I didn't know too many pop songs, but I do have some vague memories of my parents playing the radio in the car when we'd go places.

Probably about the same time for me too, when I began to connect titles and artists to songs I heard. I mean, I knew about famous names in the world of pop culture (such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, etc), but I couldn't necessarily connect them with the music when I was 5. But I do remember certain snippets of songs and what they sounded like.

Yeah, me too. I was talking about that Barbra Streisand song at the other comment. I was 7 years old when I found out that Babs sung that. When Michael, Madonna, Prince, blew up in 1983, I was in the first grade, 6 years old. In 1980, Michael Jackson was well known, but didn't become an international star until 1983. Madonna didn't have an album yet. I was 3 in 1980, but I have enough memory to know that Madonna was nowhere to be found on the radio in 1980. Prince didn't really blow up yet even though he came out with Dirty Mind. I only heard "Head" in 1980, but didn't know the name of the song. When I was 3, the music still sounded like the leftover from the 70s in my opinion. Songs like "Upside Down", "Celebration", "Behind The Groove", "I Need Your Lovin", "Rock With You", and all the song that was released in 1980 still sounded 70ish.

Here's another great one! I also loved another Richie/Ross duet on that same soundtrack, "Dreaming of You".
Enjoying your video posts...they really take me back!
Thank you very much! I was just helping out the original poster of this thread. I've never heard that song by the two of them, but I will give it a try.

"For Your Eyes Only", Sheena Easton, 1981
She was one of Prince's girls back in the day. I think Prince kinda revived her career in the late 80's after she didn't have great chart success in the mid portion of the decade back in the 80's.

The Way She Talks About You-Melissa Manchester.
From Spring of 1982, I haven't heard that one in years.
It was way different than her '70s stuff.
"Never Knew Love Like This Before" & "Magic" are a couple of solid favorites from 1980!
"Even The Nights Are Better", Air Supply, 1982.
Uh-oh...there's only two AS songs I like and that ain't one of them, but
this one is, from early 1980...

Lost in Love - Air Supply
And one more good one from 1982...

It's Gonna Take a Miracle - Deniece Williams
Yeah I like that song by Deniece Williams.

The only non-Prince song that she charted in the mid 80s was "Strut" in 1984. Other than that, she didn't have a lot of chart hits unti Prince came along with "Sugar Walls".

But I thought that this thread is for songs from 1980-1982 before MTV, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Madonna, Flashdance, took over big time.
