Subject: A laser turntable tried to save vinyl from obliviation

:\'(

I found a Billboard article from 1985 about introducing a laser-optical turntable for 1986 that used a low-power laser beam which read the audio signal via groove reflection. It also used precise tracking approaches based on computer disk drive technology. Bot traditional "punch play" and full programmability were offered. This way it could preserve the life of vinyl better and address the tens of million of vinyl records as this was still before vinyl was "doomed"; that way so people don't have to but CD versions of the vinyl copies they already have.

Ultimately, with the CD's size advantages (both compactness and length of space), along with the fact that CDs came down in price, this project couldn't hit the masses.
