My top 10 worst 80's songs.
9) Torture - The Jacksons
7) 9 To 5 - Dolly Parton
I don't mind the above. I have the album with 'Torture' on. As for Kenny Rogers, I think most of his stuff is boring apart from the excellent 'Gambler'.
My top 10 worst 80s songs probably goes a little like this...
10. 'The girl is mine' - Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney
9. 'Keep on movin'' - Soul II Soul
8. 'Words' - F.R David
7. 'I scare myself' - Thomas Dolby
6. 'Your love is king' - Sade
5. 'What's the colour of money?' - Hollywood Beyond
4. 'See the day' - Dee C. Lee
3. 'Stop' - Sam Brown
2. Cry' - Godley and Creme
1. 'I need you' - B.V.S.M.P

Also pretty bad, in my opinion:
Heart - Marty Balin
Hearts - always liked this one...
Not so much the worst, but pop songs I never liked. Off the top o' my head, no particular order...
"Sweet Child O' Mine" - GN'R
"Genius of Love" - Tom Tom Club
"We Built This City" - Starship
"What I Am" - Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
"In My House" - Mary Jane Girls
"Sister Christian" - Night Ranger*
"Walk Like An Egyptian" - Bangles
"Mony Mony" - Billy Idol
"Keep Your Hands to Yourself" - Georgia Satellites
"In the Air Tonight" - Phil Collins
* I have to comment on this one - if you're around my age and you listened to rock in high school you're supposed to get weepy-eyed sentimental when you hear "Sister Christian". I've observed this behavior among many of my peers...phooey...

Agree with Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" 8-P
I'll add Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" to the list 8-P
I'll see your "9 to 5" and raise you a Sheena Easton "Morning Train (Nine-to-Five)"
Matthew Wilder was a little too Richard Simmons for me! I did think "Just Called" was a cute song, but it just wasn't up to snuff for Stevie and got waaay overplayed. Refer to Jack Black's tirade in "High Fidelity."
I have to protest Whistledog's inclusion of "O Superman." This is a gloriously grim comment on the cold war made with minimalist school techniques and brilliant use of the Vocoder. It also touches on U.S. militarism and authoritarianism. It's actually more relevant today than it was 25 years ago. I listened to it the other day. It sounds a little dated the way a lot of Philip Glass music does, but it's still excellent.
I was listening to "O Superman" a lot after 9/11, with the first track from Anderson's "Big Science" album, "From the Air"
"O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad.
O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad.
Hi. I'm not home right now. But if you want to leave a
message, just start talking at the sound of the tone.
Hello? This is your Mother. Are you there? Are you
coming home?
Hello? Is anybody home? Well, you don't know me,
but I know you.
And I've got a message to give to you.
Here come the planes.
So you better get ready. Ready to go. You can come
as you are, but pay as you go. Pay as you go.
And I said: OK. Who is this really? And the voice said:
This is the hand, the hand that takes. This is the
hand, the hand that takes.
This is the hand, the hand that takes.
Here come the planes.
They're American planes. Made in America.
Smoking or non-smoking?
And the voice said: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom
of night shall stay these couriers from the swift
completion of their appointed rounds.
'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice.
And when justive is gone, there's always force.
And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. So hold me,
Mom, in your long arms.
In your automatic arms. Your electronic arms.
In your arms.
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms.
Your petrochemical arms. Your military arms.
In your electronic arms."
--O Superman
"Good evening.
This is your Captain.
We are about to attempt a crash landing.
Please extinuish all cigarettes.
Place your tray tables in their upright, locked position.
Your Captain says: Put your head on your knees. Your Captain says: Put your head on your hands. Captain says: Put your hands on your head.
Put your hands on your hips.
Heh heh.
This is your Captain-and we are going down.
We are all going down, together.
And I said: Uh oh.
This is gonna be some day.
Standby.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.
Uh-this is your Captain again.
You know, I've got a funny feeling
I've seen this all before.
Why?
Cause I'm a caveman.
Why?
Cause I've got eyes in the back of my head.
Why?
It's the heat.
Standby.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.
Put your hands over your eyes.
Jump out of the plane.
There is no pilot.
You are not alone.
Standby.
This is the time.
And this is the
record of the time.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time. "

It was neat the way it made use of a vocoder and such, but it's not exactly the kind of song you can dance to or really sing along with. It's more of an experimental song. You don't listen to it, you listen to it. It's just too bizarre for me, plus it's way too long

Thanks a lot GEICO for ruining a great song!
I'll have to disagree on 1999; it was quite credible when it was released (actually I think of Phil Collins Sussudio as being the copycat and 1999 as the original!) Embarassing to the talent of Prince!
My worst:
Roger- Computer Love (hints at the Auto-tune revolution to come during the late 00's, but a warning)
Anything Tiffany (especially the dreadful I Think We're Alone Now); the only good Shondells cover was Joan Jett's Crimson and Clover
ANYTHING COUNTRY (I noticed the Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton in here, but as I collect records, lots of the country junk is no good, it sounds like third-rate '60s bubblegum). The '80s IMO were the worst decade for country music.
ANYTHING Milli Vanilii (Not just Girl You Know It's True; Blame It On The Rain and Girl I'm Gonna Miss You are especially lousy)
George Michael- Monkey
Whitey Houston: The Greatest Love of All
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUVu51eTX_0&feature=channel (This was last night!)
I hate to say but this is a STANDARD that still lives on well today; it's gone the way of an Over The Rainbow.

It's long for a pop song, but short for a minimalist piece, which typically run from 12 minutes (eg. Steve Reich: Come Out) to 45 minutes (eg. Terry Riley: In C) or longer (eg. LaMonte Young: Dream House -- 78:17)!

Finally! Someone who hates Boom Boom Boom, just as much as I do! ;D
But, I have a more valid reason for it!
First and for most, it was the most vastly over played song, on the radio, when it was on the airwaves.
Second, it was played during my grade six graduation party!
;D
What an appropriate song, to play at a grade six, graduation party!
;D

No way, that one was awesome. I have the 12", the 45 and several 80s comps with it. It's a fun novelty hit

The beatboxing is awesome. If you have the 12" that normally plays at 33 RPM, switch the acapella up to 45 and the last 8 bars makes it sound like Popeye :D

That reminds me of the time my little brother was singing "Little Red Corvette."
I said, "Stuart, do you understand what that song is about?"
"It's about a car," he said flatly.
I didn't know what to say next.
"Uhhh...not really...it's not really about a car, it's, uhhh, where did you learn the lyrics?"
"Day camp."
I thought he meant the other kids were singing it, but then he says,
"We sing it in Mr. Gould's music class."
:-\\
I didn't say anything else. I just though somebody is going to read Mr. Gould his rights pretty soon!
I was a C.I.T. at that day camp the same year. Mr. Gould had the kids singing a bunch of songs popular at the time, such as "Beat It," "Electric Avenue," and "(Keep Feeling) Fascination, and, yes, Prince!
I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but Mr. Gould could have been the inspiration for Mr. Garrison on "South Park."

Could be worse, the song could have been either Darling Nikki or Sugar Walls.

It's not about a car? Never paid attention to the lyrics. I shall look them up...
Update: Okay I get it. It's supposed to be the girl's thingee. What a clever guy...

Hey, I love that song!
"Got a pocket full of horses, Trojans, some of the used,
but I felt a little ill when I saw the pictures of the jockeys that were there before you...
(Break for some heavy breathing...)
And the ride (twang twang twang)
I said the ride... is so smoooooooth, you must be a limo-zeen!!!"

I must add "Didn't You Kill My Brother" Alexei Sayle......AAAGGGHHH!!! I absolutely cannot stand it! That song has got to be the king of the worst 80s songs!!!
I'm surprised anyone actually knows this song, lol. Alexei Sayle did at least two songs and this was the least successful of the two. Here is ''Ullo John, gotta new motor?', lol.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhHJ4zEKDZY
As mentioned by Jason, Sayle was primarily a comedian who just happened to have a hit record. His best times were in 'The Young Ones' as The Balowski Family - 'Dr Marten's Boots' always tickles me, ha ha.

Bon Jovi:
"You Give Love a Bad name" and "Livin' on a Prayer."
Sorry Jovi fans, but those songs were played to death!
"Hungry Eyes" by Eric Cartman, I mean Eric Carmen, was frikkin' awful!
"I feel the magic between you and ME! is grammatically correct."
"but 'me' doesn't 'rhyme with EYES."
Exactly my point Mr. Carmen, you're writing a really dumb song. Write a better song.

Leather And Lace - Stevie Nicks and Don Henley.
Several years ago, I was driving down a two-lane highway in Wyoming when I saw an old sheepherder walking along the side of the road with a flock of about 200 sheep. Now normally whenever a sheepherder takes his flock out to graze he'll have at least 3 or 4 sheepdogs to stop the sheep from wandering off and to keep the flock together. (It's actually pretty neat to watch if you've ever seen it.) However, I noticed that there were no dogs in sight, yet the flock stayed close to the sheepherder and not a single sheep went wandering off. I was wondering how on earth the sheepherder was keeping his flock together, and once I got closer I saw that he was carrying a boombox.
He was playing this song. ;D

Funny story!
I use to have that album by Stevie Nicks, I liked "Leather and Lace", thought it was one of the better songs that year.
