Subject: MTV (Aug 1st, 1981)...

Written By: Davester on 08/01/09 at 9:02 pm

Twenty-eight years today.  Unfortunately we didn't have cable until '83, but that didn't mean I couldn't catch music vids, just watched them on other shows like Night Flight, Friday Night Videos and CMC (California Music Channel) locally.  I do know the programming in MTV's early days was nearly unrecognizable, unless you knoew who PhD, Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, Rupert Hine and The Silencers were (I didn't...)

So anyway, I'll raise my glass of beer in honor of what you once were, MTV.  I never would've guessed that two decades later people would still be talking about it...

And I give Chucky permission to ban me if I ever start another thread about MTV...

Well, today MTV aired the Top 10 Michael Jackson videos voted by fans, which #1 is no suprise...

VH1 is basically a clone of E! (with videos in the dusk) and VH1 Classic is just VH1 specials from recent years and too much classic rock (C'mon, where's the variety)...

First starting watching around 1996/1997, though was slowly going downhill until "TRL" came about in 1998  8-P

I've never in my life seen MTV, but I gather like most music video networks, when it started off, it was all about the music.  And now, not so much?

Our 'Much Music' in Canada is starting to go the MTV route:  More reality and tabloid shows than music videos, but they still do air a good chunk of videos.

We now have MTV in Canada, but get this:  Due to CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) regulations, MTV Canada is not allowed to air any music videos because the channel was first licensed for broadcast as a talk only network called 'Talk TV' and did not allow for any music programming.

So MTV Canada can't re-license, or whatever?  Actually MTV USA is a talk only channel, too...

So sad to realize that the network has absolutely no cultural significance today, but it sure was a pop culture touchstone when it debuted twenty-eight years ago!

yes! but its all their fault for changing the format to...  whatever it  is now! they got away from the music video, which is what made them a household name back then!

It's a few days until MTV's 29th anniversary and next year will be it's 30th. Though like their 25th, they'll probably air the same ol' dung as usual...

With all the reality shows now shown on MTV, should the channel now be called RTV for Reality TeleVision?

I call it NMTV...No Music TeleVision.

Next year...MTV will be 30 years old...so it better have Music Vids by then!

I saw you on the cable back in '81,
Cut out a notch filter, the signal trap undone,
I got away with it, the cable hack was fun,
(Oh, oh!)

They stopped the music, no more second symphony,
Scripts for the focus groups, the new technology,
And now I understand what's wrong with MTV.
(Oh, oh!)

They were the first one,
They were the last one,
Reality killed the video star.
Reality killed the video star.
Product placement broke our hearts,
Dead just like our VCRs...

I especially despised Kurt Loder and his "Week in Rock."  He was soooo snotty and condescending; a 45-year-old corporate hack trying to tell all the kids about what's going on in rock 'n' roll.  Then he went on to work for the far-right faux-libertarian Reason magazine, which was the perfect place for a fascist-playing-hipster intellectual featherweight such as Kurt!
