Subject: Wasn't 1986 kind of a boring year (especially for music)?

Written By: Marty McFly on 06/04/09 at 2:27 pm

Don't get me wrong, there was alot of awesome songs, but overall it seems kinda dull. I guess because the excitement of early MTV and new wave was kinda dwindling, but it was before the late '80s crazes started picking up. When I look over the charts, I notice there was ALOT of adult contemporary, probably more than ever too.

Even alot of the more "lively" singers or bands that came out that year didn't seem to really get massive until 1987 (like Bon Jovi or Janet Jackson). I'm sure teens knew about it, but I personally didn't hear alot of that until a year later or so.

Let's see...this was the year that bestowed Chris De Blurgh's 'Lady In Red' upon us (amongst other 'delights')... 8-P

That one song alone was enough to make me lose interest (rapidly, I might add!)

^ That's what I was saying about AC being huge. I admit I like alot of soft songs and ballads, but there seems to just be SO MANY of them in '86. I can't stand that one either, there's a such thing as being too sappy. ;D

Yeah, but like I was saying I never heard those Control songs until 1987 (my mom bought the album actually), so I'm guessing it took some time before it caught on to the point where everyone heard of her.

"120 Minutes" debut on MTV and "Black Celebration" from Depeche Mode, which many that are into '80's alternative, consider as one of the best albums

Many would disagree, but Run DMC & The Beastie Boys were huge (or what VH1 wants people to think)

Ah yes! Another one...

Probably unknown to our American friends (lucky you!), but Boris Gardiner's soft reggae cack 'I Want To Wake Up With You' is one of those songs you don't want to wake up with!

I could have sworn that part of the 80's was the year of big ballads.  My mom liked listening alot of Michael Bolton in 1989.

Ugh.....I never hesitated to change the radio station once that song came on!  :P

I remember listening to a lot of Madonna, Bananarama, and Janet Jackson that year.  The radio was practically my best friend in '86 (just wasn't a very good year for me on a personal level  :().

I was 19 and pretty damn sure its wasn't anything close to a boring year, especially in music.
In this year alone some pretty influential music was released.
That you guys don't remember or don't know is a shame.  :P

Another case of too young to remember, so you think nothing happened..

Major Events of 1986
-Challenger Space Shuttle explodes killing 7 astronauts.

-Chernobyl Accident (first nuclear disaster) in Soviet Union.

-Iran-Contra revealed to public.

-Crack epidemic overwhelms the nations cites, with exploding rates of crime and violence.

-US bombs bombs Libya.
Yep, pretty boring. ::)

Just a sampling (this includes a lot of music I didn't care for, but I can't deny it was important and had an impact).
A few of these releases were first ones from bands that went on to be HUGE, others are just obvious classics.

Black Celebration – Depeche Mode
The Queen Is Dead – The Smiths
Pretty In Pink - Various Artists Soundtrack
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Dirty Work - The Rolling Stones
5150 - Van Halen
Rapture - Anita Baker
Album – Public Image Limited
Twitch - Ministry
Top Gun - Various Artists Soundtrack
The Way It Is -  Bruce Hornsby & the Range
Wonderland - Erasure
Invisible Touch - Genesis
Rage for Order - Queensrÿche
True Blue - Madonna
Back in the High Life - Steve Winwood
Belinda - Belinda Carlisle
Crowded House - Crowded House
Lyle Lovett - Lyle Lovett

Revenge - Eurythmics
Raising Hell - Run D.M.C.
Lifes Rich Pageant - R.E.M.
Rat in the Kitchen - UB40

I Against I - Bad Brains
Licensed to Ill - The Beastie Boys
Strong Persuader - Robert Cray
Electric Café -  Kraftwerk
Chris Isaak - Chris Isaak

You CANNOT tell me that 1986 was a boring year in music, unless, like a lot of others, you were smoking crack... ::)

Oh I get where you're coming from, but I wasn't saying it was boring by itself... I agree, there's loads of excellent songs I've always liked, movies too. Just for the point of discussion, I was more just saying that it seems a little dull when you compare it to the surrounding years (new wave and early mtv of 1982-'85, or hair metal and dancepop of '87-90). I actually personally remember hearing alot of these songs at the time, so don't get me wrong, I have some fond early childhood memories of that year as well. ;)

Out of your list, these are the ones I like. I personally associate alot of that with 1987 though (I bet some of the singles didn't come out until then anyway).

5150 - Van Halen
Top Gun - Various Artists Soundtrack

One record I wasn't too big on from 1986 was the dreadful 'U-Vox' from Ultravox.  Big let down Midge, BIG letdown

1986 and 1987 were my favorite years out of the 80's in terms of music. 1986 was the first whole year I spent in school. I was 6 and in kindergarten and first grade. I was living with my 16 year old sister who turned 17 that September, and my 14 year old brother who turned 15 that December. He started high school that year. That was the first year I got into music. But I didn't independently start listening to it until 1987 when my other sister moved in with us, which was when i became aware of pop culture and got my first tapes. 1982 (first year of faint memories) - 1985 music I was pretty much just heard but didn't generally "like" because I was a little young. 1986 I heard the music and started to like it. I do agree that pop culture wasn't as... flashy as 1987 - 1989.

About the Janet Jackson thing, wasn't "Nasty" a big hit in 1986?

Control was 3x Platinum by the end of 1986.
"What Have You Done For Me Lately" peaked at #4 in May 1986.   "Nasty" peaked at #3 in 1986.  These were played pretty heavily on Top 40 and R&B stations in metropolitan areas that year.

Other notable trax that were big in '86:

"Point Of No Return" & "I Can't Wait" - Nu Shooz
"Bizarre Love Triangle" - New Order
"West End Girls" (Remix), "Oppportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)" - Pet Shop Boys (note: WEG, the Bobby O mix was released in 1984)
"Brand New Lover" - Dead Or Alive
"Talk To Me" - Chico DeBarge
"Sledgehammer" , "Big Time" - Peter Gabriel
"Kiss" - Prince & The Revolution
"Rumors" - Timex Social Club
"Walk This Way" - RUN-D.M.C.
"Venus" - Bananarama
"Notorious" - Duran Duran
"Touch Me (I Want Your Body)" - Samantha Fox
"Two Of Hearts" - Stacey Q
"Dreamtime" - Daryl Hall
"Love Touch" - Rod Stewart

1986 WAS NOT a boring year and I can give you two freaking reasons why:

1--I WAS BORN IN 1986!  ;D ;D ;D ;D I don't call myself Apollonia1986 for nothing.

2--Prince decided to start wearing those little pants that barely hung onto his hips in the "Kiss" video, and the subsequent "Parade" tour.  ;)

One of the most predominant keyboard synthesizer sounds found that year (along with many 1985 and 1987 songs) was the Yamaha DX7 Electric Piano sound. It has that "glossy, beauty salon/nail polish/Doogie Howser TV Theme" sound mostly used in ballads.

1986 was one of most favourite - probably because I wasn't far off being a teenager, but still there were some great albums released that year. Let's also not forget that the UK charts had a whole host of great talents that year.

Did they? I must've blinked and missed them!  ;)

Quite apart from the aforementioned De Blurgh and Gardiner, there were sonic assaults from Su Pollard, Cliff Richard & The Young Ones, Spitting Image,The Grange Hill Cast ('Just Say No' being ironically appropriate!), Chas & Dave with The Matchroom Mob, Doctor & The Medics, Sinitta, Anita Dobson, MC Miker 'G' & DJ Sven, Nick Berry and Des O'Connor with Roger Whittaker...and they all went Top 10, saints preserve us!

You couldn't find a greater pile of steaming tripe if you tried...
