1983 was definitely the stand out year. The third year in any decade normally is.

I said 1983.
It was definitely picking up in '81/82 (like videogames and new wave), but I think Thriller was what pushed it over the edge, not just in America but worldwide. That also seemed to really make MTV take off. '70s culture seemed to be almost entirely gone by then, so that's important too imo.

I know I'm sounding like a smartass, but don't we need a definition of "80's Culture" specifically before we can claim when it started? :-\\
What are the things that defined the 80's culture from the 1970's or 1990's?

I believe that it's 1983 because I was in the first grade at the time, and that's when Michael Jackson's Thriller went through the roof, and it defined 80s music forever. 1983 was definitely the beginning of the 80s pop culture.
