Subject: 70's songs in the 80's

Written By: joeman on 02/16/09 at 11:36 am

What songs from the 80's that had a strong 70's feel to them?

My pick is Michael McDonald's 1982 hit, I Keep Forgettin.

Anything Earth, Wind, and Fire, particularly Let's Groove (1981). While it really became hard to find ater 1982, even in 1989 you still had stuff like the Bee Gees One, it sure could pass for 1976 if it weren't for some of those twinkling synth sounds! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE5l0k_2-oQ

How about Billy Squire, his rock music sounded 70s despite a lot of keyboards being played.

I would say 'Ooh I Love You' by the the Climax Blues Band it certainly has that 70s soft rock sound to it and also '65 Love Affair' by Paul Davis ,

Yeah, there were alot of 70s holdovers up to 1982, even '83 just from what I've heard. There were also some older singers or bands who just kinda didn't change their style that much. I agree with you about the Michael McDonald song...here's some others (imo):

any Air Supply ;)
Steal Away- Robbie Dupree
Lets Groove- Earth Wind and Fire (that's sort of synthy disco, though)
Against the Wind-Bob Seger
Up Where We Belong - Joe Cocker
Just the two of us- Grover Washington
Take it on the Run - REO Speedwagon
most Christopher Cross songs ("Never Be the Same" sounds kinda 80s, but the rest are seventieslike, imo)
65 Love Affair- Paul Davis
Baby Come to Me- Patti Austin and James Ingram

Now I know why "real 80s music" seemed so fun. ;) Most of those songs are pretty boring, imo - like the leftover singer songwriter lite stuff - good thing MTV came around, lol.

McFly - I agree with you on most of those songs.

Its definitely easy to see songs from 1980 having a 70s feel. Here are a few songs a little later that have a 70s feel:

Paul McCartney / Wings - Take It Away (1982)
John Cougar - Jack And Diane (1982)
Sylvester - Do You Wanna Funk (1982)
Sergio Mendes - Never Gonna Let You Go (1982)
Joe Cocker / Jennifer Warnes - Up Where We Belong (1982)
Fleetwood Mac - Hold Me (1982)

"Cool Night" by Paul Davis sounds more like it was from the late 70's. I was a little surprised when I first found out this song came out in 1981/1982.

Funny you say that about "Jack and Diane" because I think it's actually ahead of its time, it almost sounds like a 90s alternative rock song! It's more stripped down and it's also doesn't have synths. Most of Mellencamp's songs kinda sounded like this actually.

What's even more ironic is that his few songs that sound 80s (i.e. I Need a Lover, Ain't Even Done With the Night) were early on. I think both of those were 1981. "Hurts so Good" kinda does too actually.
