Subject: What '80s songs aren't on the radio anymore in your area?
Written By: Marty McFly on 01/01/09 at 6:48 pm
I'm more talking about big hits or recognizable songs. Just wondered because every radio station is a little different. I think sometimes airplay could have a little bit to do with local popularity, like I'll bet a band or an artist's hometown might play them more. Just like how there's more country stations in the South and all.
These are some I remember from the '80s and others that I only heard for the first time in the '90s (so they were still in rotation then too)....but in the last several years I don't recall them in the Bay Area:
Waiting for a Star to Fall - Boy Meets Girl
any Paula songs besides "Straight Up"
Lawyers in Love - Jackson Browne
Dancing on the Ceiling - Lionel Richie (probably his only big song they don't play)
The Flame - Cheap Trick
You Should Hear How she talks about you - Melissa Manchester
Delirious - Prince
You are the Girl - the Cars
Loverboy - Billy Ocean
Posession Obsession - Hall and Oates
Something so Strong - Crowded House
St Elmo's Fire - John Parr (I first heard this on a Sacramento station around '94 and loved it)
Sara - Starship
Don't Lose My Number - Phil Collins
Take Me to Heart - Quarterflash
Stone Love - Kool and the Gang
Mary's Prayer - Danny Wilson
High on You - Survivor
We Dont Have to take our clothes off - Jermaine Stewart
Every Little Kiss - Bruce Hornsby

Everything But My Pride - Cutting Crew. You mean they had other hits ?? I can't speak for the rest of the world, but back in the day, this was a popular radio favourite in Canada. It's not well remembered today because it hasn't been heard in forever

Ebony & Ivory - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder
I don't even remember hearing it in the 90's. Or the late 80's. But when it was big, it was played to the point that you'd get sick of hearing it. I always wondered how that one got overlooked on the oldies circuit.

"Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes. The song was huge when it came out in the early 80's. It recieved much airplay throughout the decade on most radio stations. Once into the 90's however, the song gradually vanished. I have not heard it in years.

Funny enough, one of the soft rock stations around here (San Jose/South Bay Area) plays it sometimes. I know what you mean though, it's ironic how some of the biggest songs have disappeared. Like not just Top 40, but top ten or even #1 hits that are still pretty recognizable!

You're so right. Go figure.

I can think of one or two songs...
Believe it or not, but these were both #1 hits over here, and I hardly ever hear them anymore.
Dolly Parton - You Are
Cliff Richard & The Young Ones - Living Doll

This also hit the top here and has long since dropped off the playlists (actually no bad thing! ;))
The same goes for the majority of multi-artist 'charity' singles from that time...The Crowd ('You'll Never Walk Alone') and Ferry Aid ('Let It Be') being two more examples...

"Physical" by Olivia Newton John. The song was played to extremes when it was first released and played consistantly thoughout the 80's. I haven't heard this song for some time now.

I still hear these songs on terrestrial radio in the Phoenix area. :)
Here's some 80's hits I haven't heard in a long time on terrestrial radio:

"Serious" - Donna Allen
"Spotlight" and "Dress You Up" - Madonna
"Only The Young" - Journey
"Love Zone" - Billy Ocean
"Sweet Love" and "Giving You The Best That I Got" - Anita Baker
"Pleasure Principle" - Janet Jackson
"The Girl Is Mine" - Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney
"Say Say Say" - Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson

I can't speak for local radio stations... because we just don't listen to them anymore.
I can hear almost everything from any year on Sirius.
So I don't miss a thing. ;)

In my area there aren't many soft rock 80s only radio stations. On Saturday nights, one station here plays 80s music but seems to focus on music after 1982. I think of the artists between 1980 and 1982 that seem to disappear from the airwaves.
Christopher Cross- Arthur's Theme
Alan Parsons Project- Eye in the Sky
Paul Davis- 65 Love Affair
Eddie Rabbit- Love a Rainy Night
Dan Fogelberg- Longer
Manhattan Transfer- Twilight Zone
Little River Band- Take it Easy On Me

'The Power of Love' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Used to be it got most play around Christmas time, but even now at anytime do I hear it anymore. Once a BIG hit in Canada, now just a lost 80s classic :(
I am sure it still gets good treatment in the UK though

Not really...normally only around Christmastime is it heard...
Rather strange, as it's not a Christmas song per se...it's just that the video made a big thing of it!

Y'know, I've even seen it appear on Christmas Compilation CDs. Boy, nothing gets you in a Christmas mood like a song that isn't about Christmas :D
