Subject: Really depressing 70's and 80's animated films.
Written By: JamieMcBain on 11/16/08 at 11:31 am
Has anyone watched the animated versions of Watership Down and Animal Farm? Or seen The Plague Dogs?
I also dare anyone to watch When The Wind Blows, and not brake out klennex, by the end of the film.

I remember seeing a movie on HBO in the late 70s or early 80s called "The Mouse and his Child" about a pair of wind-up toy mice, a father and son, joined at the hands. Such a beautifully done animated movie with such a sad ending! What were they trying to do us kids then??

"Watership Down" was kind of depressing. Another one, IMO, was "The Rescuers" which I think was from the 70s.
Even "Charlotte's Web" was sad when Charlotte passed away. And even sadder when they carved up Wilbur (the pig) and ate him for dinner.

Actually, Wilbur the pig, does survive, the spider is not as lucky.

Not exactly a movie, but "Here Comes Garfield" is very emotional

The animated "Heavy Metal" was weird and depressing all at once!

This wasn't a movie either but...
"The Velveteen Rabbit" was sad. The rabbit does survive, but everything else didn't.
If scarlet fever was still around, people may probably Lysoled everything.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Yeah, it's a bit depressing, as are most movies of the 80s that are about "the future." I love that movie, as it symbolizes everything I loved about the 80s. The music, the crappy animation, the cheesy sci-fi aspect, the "Friday Night Videos" look to it... everything!
