Subject: What's the female singer's name?
Written By: chrisreade on 11/15/08 at 3:46 pm
Can anyone help - I've been wracking my brains for days and can't think of her name (definitely getting old!). Any suggestions welcome.
She sang in a band whose name I can't remember either (urrgghh!!!) - I am almost sure the band was Canadian - in the early-mid 1980's. I remember in 1986 being at university and an uptempo pop single of theirs was often played on the radio at the time, but am not sure if it ever charted in the UK (where I'm from).
Then, probably very late 80's or early 90's she had a massive solo hit in the UK with catchy ballad.
I've trawled a list of every artist and single to hit the top 40 in the UK between 1985 and 1995 and didn't spot her name. I've spent hours on this! Any suggestions arising from the very poor description above would be really welcome!
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris
Can you remember any lyrics at all? Even just a word or two can sometimes jog someones memory.

Could you also post the names of the lead singers, please? That might help the original poster enough.

This I can do yes ...
The Headpins (Darby Mills / Chrissy Steele)
National Velvet (Maria Del Mar)
Toronto (Holly Woods)
Rough Trade (British born Carole Pope)
The Parachute Club (Lorraine Segato)
One to One (Louise Reny)
Mensroom
Minutes From Downtown (Lucasta Ross)
Alta Moda (Molly Johnson)
Doubledare (Wendy Lands)
Cowboy Junkies (Margo Timmins)
I don't remember who the voice of Mensroom was, but I don't think that would be the one anyway. Their only hit was a 1983 cover of The Belle Stars 'Sign of the Times' and I don't think it or anyone from the band made waves outside of Canada

Carole Pope was the lead singer of Rough Trade. I don't know the others.

Yes, shocking, I know! Actually, that's how I found these here boards. I was looking for the name of the artist that sang "All Touch" (I still LOVE that one) and Absolutelyvile (remember her?) answered for me. I was so ecstatic, I decided to stick around. :D

Hmmm....
I am wondering if the band was D-Mob. They had a hit with "C'mon and get my love".
The lead singer for a couple of years was Cathy Dennis.
She went on to have a few hits which included "Too many walls" and "Touch me".
Only one I can think of.

I was hoping that by reading the names of the singers I'd be able to pinpoint who the OP was talking about. I've looked into a few names that 'rang a bell' but none seem the right type of music and I don't recognise any of the titles.

I recognise Cathy Dennis Touch Me (All Night Long). So perhaps that's the one. :-\\

It could maybe also be British singer Lisa Stansfield? She was in an 80s band called Blue Zone UK that had a hit circa 1988 (I forget what it was called)

Thanks all very much for your suggestions and help. The situation is... I am not really interested in the ballad, but in tracking down a song she recorded with the band she was in...
Unfortunately I misdirected you all because - when I woke up this morning the tune I'd been trying to place was in my head!
- "Show Me Heaven" (the ballad)
- A quick internet search showed it to be by.... Maria McKee
- A further search showed she used to be in "Lone Justice" - not Candian, but from LA (or near).
- Further search of their discography showed first track on seconf album was the one I was after ... "I Found Love"
Mystery now solved - sorry if you all feel I've wasted your time! D'oh.
:o

No excuse to go rummaging through old playlists is ever a waste of time. Even if it turns out to be wild goose chase, half the fun of these threads is in the tracks we discover while hunting down the mystery track. (And thanks for posting the answer!)
