I've heard while we think of synth pop, in America at least bands like REO and Journey were more popular among blue-collar, everyday people.

A lot of artists are making 80s music, but it still can't get rid of the new stuff. People want to hear grunge rock and hip hop.

The Killers would be the most popular. A lot though, the Tings Tings, Bravery, Franz Ferdinand, The Postal Service, Hellogoodbye.
People want to hear Flo-Rida and Nickelback though. 8-P
