Subject: So what was your first car in the 80's?
Written By: oingo_fan on 10/03/08 at 9:03 pm
I got my license in '85, I could have bought a GT350 Shelby Mustang for $3800 or a 1982 Ford EXP for $3200. Of COURSE I picked the EXP (groan!) :-[. What was your first ride if you got your llicense from 1980-1989?

My first car was a black '89 Ford Escort GT, bought brand new in '89. Two years earlier I had a Kawasaki EX500 which I totalled...

Got my license in early '81.
I was college "po", so my first car was a beat up 1968 Cadillac coupe. It was big and white and ugly and built like a tank, despite all its rust and dents. Although it was a Cadillac. I paid $350.00 for it. Did I mention it was built like a tank? Someone rear ended it while it was parked. My car looked barely different than when I parked it - I think the red tail light cover got cracked. The other car (a mid size, something 76-77ish) or what was left of it looked like it hit a brick wall. Did I mention it was built like a tank? It also guzzled gas like a tank. Hmmm, wouldya believe that back in '81 we thought gas was expensive, too? ;D

I don't think Ford made Escorts in 1969. ;D
My first wheels was a 1978 Camaro Z28

First wheels I bought entirely myself in 1989 was a 1966 Buick Wildcat
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y234/nwmetal/car%20shows/history/66wildcat.jpg
Probably the only Buick entry into the Musclecar class! with the 425 under the hood, it had serious power.

Getting my license in 1988 I always wanted a Ford Pinto, or a AMC Gremlin (I thought they were awsome Coupes) - but I got stuck with a maroon 1981 ford escort :-\\ Oh well, I suppose I survived (and bought 2 more Escorts, before Ford ended the line). I think I would still like to have a Pinto though; or maybe the Gremlin.... They still look to be fun.

Guys, guys, you're forgetting I'm talking about British Ford. The Escort was first manufactured in 1967

At the time I had about 20 Barbies and my mom wanted me to take them all one place at one time, so I wouldn't leave Barbies all over the house. (And I used to leave them everywhere. On the breakfast table, in my bed, all over the living room! LOL. Looked like the Matell factory has blown up in my house!) I'm half tempted to buy one for my MJ dolls. LOL.

in the 80's, me and Lady Di's first new auto was a brand new 1985 blue Toyota 4wheel drive truck just like the one in this pic with the white rims and all. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3068/2699058637_df27ed31d5.jpg?v=0
I actually took it 4 wheeling many times out on the levees of the San Joaquin River. it was cool. I had a Baltimore Colts minature football helmet glued onto the dash that i got from a promotion at Baskin Robbins. You bought an ice cream sundae served in the helmet ::) http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0S020proulIvWsACmqjzbkF/SIG=12ib9rsql/EXP=1223357419/**http%3A//www.sidelinemvp.com/Images/NFL-MiniThrow/colts-58-s.jpg

I didn't know it until this morning, but apparently I've had a love affair with the Chevy Nova. You see, that was the first car I drove, a 1979 Bright Blue Chevy Nova, not unlike this model http://people.smu.edu/acambre/nova/novahawke79/novahawke79x.jpg I probably have a picture of it in one of my parent's boxes of random photos (if they are not all melded together by now.) :-\\ Then I had a 1980 Chevy Citation (which is what the Nova transformed into) although I can tell you for sure that I did not buy one brand spankin' new. I'm still waiting to buy a new car (when I hit the lottery :P ). Then later I drove a Chevy Malibu that is apparently what the Chevy Citation/Nova turned into...so you see...my addiction...er...loyalty runs deep.

The first car I ever drove was a Mazda 323 Hatchback then after that was a Toyota Pick-Up.
The first car I ever purchased was a Honda Civic and I am still driving a Honda Civic. Not the same car, of course. I have owned 3 Honda's so far.

Does it count if it's the first car I rode in? ;D
From what I can remember, my dad got a beige Mercedes luxury car (I forget the exact model) around '83/84 which we had for a few years. My mom had a '79ish white Corvette that was super fast, too. They actually had quite a few cars back then, and they were generally really up to date. I think that's why '70s cars always seemed old to me, 'cause I was never in them very often. '80s cars certainly look a bit older now (especially with the boxy look, combined with them aging) but they seem so much more modern, probably because they made them really good and since they remind me of my little kid years.

My first car was a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass. I got it on November 27, 1986, which was my 16th birthday and it was a present from my older sister. When I first got it, the exhaust had a really bad leak, which led one of my friends to remark that I ought to pack the mufflers full of pot so everyone in the car could be high all the time. It was quite beat up and wasn't very pretty when I got it but it got me around.
I actually raced it once. When I was a sophomore in high school I was on the golf team (I wasn't any good but it was a lot of fun), and I had a carload of freshmen with me and we were heading back home from the golf course. We were going down a four-lane highway when suddenly one of my buddies pulled up alongside me at about 60 mph. He had a '69 Mustang Mach 1, and it was a bad ass car.
I can't recall who initiated it, but something prompted both of us to simultaneously stomp on the gas and it was on. I stayed right with him up until about 105 mph and he started pulling away from me. The Cutlass just didn't have enough steam. It was a pretty tired car when I got it, plus, even though both our engines were about the same size (he had a 351 Cleveland, I had a 350), the Mustang had a 4-barrel carburetor while mine was only a 2-barrel.
The Cutlass didn't last much longer than that. Perhaps I hastened its demise by accidentally pulling a neutral drop once, which is probably the worst thing you can do to an automatic transmission and sure enough, a few months later the tranny crapped out.
It wasn't the best car I'd ever had, nor was it my favorite, but it was my first.

I did that a couple times with my volvo and it crapped out on me too.

Too true! I had a Triumph Triple and it was great. I don't know anything about the new ones, always best to do your homework. Have you had a bike before, or will this be the first?

My first in the 70s was actually my brothers car a '68 Camaro, wish I had that now. I raced a friend of mine once who did the same thing as your friend. I won when we got to the rotary, he slowed before we got to it, but I took it on two wheels. I shudder when I think about it now, it was a really stupid move, but WOWEEEEEEE!!!!!!.
