Subject: "The Glamorous Life" by Sheila E (from 1984)
Written By: Marty McFly on 05/30/08 at 9:31 pm
I like so many songs that I kinda forgot this one until recently. My uncle put it on a mixtape he made for my mom when I was about 4, so it's one of many songs that I loved back then. It's pretty upbeat dance/pop music in a Prince style (he wrote it, in fact) that just makes you feel good. Looking back now, I think it's a pretty good commentary on the materalism of the '80s too, lol.

Love Bizarre is another Prince-penned Sheila E song you might remember. He shared vocals with her on the song as well...

If you forgot about this one you may have also forgotten her earlier "Modern Girl" which is at least as catchy and reflects the attitude of the "new and improved hip, modern and independent woman" (and perhaps the reason you never had a dad...) ???
Good song...

For some reason, I never really liked 'The Glamorous Life' as much as I wanted to. I liked 'A Love Bizarre' much better. 'The Belle of St. Mark' was also good :)

This is a huge 80's favorite of mine; for a long time I only had this song on a mixtape I recorded off a radio station in the late 80's.

Good song...
Modern Girl was Sheena Easton (who's hit "Sugar Walls" was penned by Alexander Nevermind, who is actually Prince), silly boy :P

Good one to recall. Many club hours logged by yours truly, dancing to that one... ::)

I liked Shelia E before I knew she was associated with Prince. But A Love Bizarre is my JAM! What I liked about her was that she was a drummer, but she stayed feminine. She wore make up and heels and looked like a cool chick/ I looked up to her as a kid. And I still do. :)

I remember hearing that song for the first time and feeling a little funny ;D
I remember telling my little brother that it was about a gingerbread house ;D

You know what's interesting, I could never really get into Sheila E's other hits despite how much I love "Glamorous Life". Maybe I should give them another shot though.
P.S. When I listen to it back, the lyrics of that song sound '80s and '90s at the same time! The materalistic lifestyle (for the former) and the "independent woman who doesn't need a guy in her life" (for the latter). ;)

That's exactly how I feel. I love "Glamorous Life" and Sheila ticks all the boxes as an artist I should like, but for some reason I can't get into any of her other hits.

I dig Sheila E. "The Glamorous Life" is a great energetic dance track; I drop it frequently in my show (last night, in fact). Favourites include "Sister Fate" and "Koo Koo".
She was also part of Blackout Allstars, which brought us "I Like It (Like That)".
