Subject: Music videos - if you could give awards, your picks?
Written By: AmericanGirl on 04/01/08 at 11:02 pm
If you could give out awards for 80's music videos, which ones would you pick, and why? No limit, just list your picks. Here's a few I'd love to give out awards to (some of these probably did win awards at some point):
Animated
A-ha ~ Take On Me. Cool animation, creative storyline in the video story.
Dire Straits ~ Money For Nothing. I can just see those appliance store guys, made somewhat robot-like. Cool animation.
Early/Groundbreaking
Talking Heads ~ Once In A Lifetime. An early classic. Unforgettable. Enough said.
Paul McCartney ~ Coming Up. Not that the song wasn't decent, the video really made that song.
Others
Genesis ~ Land Of Confusion. Just can't shake that image of Ronald Reagan wearing Superman garb running at top speed!
Talking Heads ~ Wild, Wild Life. Heads and friends managed to imitate dozens of celebs etc in the course of performing the one song - cool!
Michael Jackson ~ Beat It. There was just something cool about MJ using real gang members in the video.
I left off many of my favorites, so I'll be back. ;)
How about yours?

Best Animated Music Video: Can't Stand Still - The Extras (1985) Great animation!
Best Music Video in General: There Was A Time - One to One (1985) The mirrored elevator with the watermarked celiing is awesome!
Best Long Form Music Video: Thriller - Michael Jackson (1983)
Best Music Video by a Duo: We Close Our Eyes - Go West (1985) Godley and Creme did a great job directing this one
Sexiest Music Video: Metal Queen - Lee Aaron (1984) Watch for the scene where they chain her up and torture her with fire. WOW!
Best Music Video from a Soundtrack: St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) - John Parr (1985) Not only is he seen singing the song at St. Elmo's Bar, he incoprorates the actors into scenes at the end. Very well done!
Worst Music Video from a Soundtrack: Flashdance ... What A Feeling - Irene Cara (1983) Nowhere does Irene appear in the video. It's just scenes from Flashdance. A little effort to make an actual video would have been nice
Worst Music Video in General: Love Leads to Madness - Nazareth (1982) In Nazareth's defense, they were more of a 70s band, when videos didn't exist. Even still, this is no excuse. A great song with a horrible video
