Subject: Least Favorite 80s songs
Written By: cinnabon on 02/13/08 at 5:10 am
Since there is a thread at the 70s section of the messageboards about bad 70s songs I was wondering if there are any 80s songs people here disliked - even though I love most 80s songs these are a couple I wouldn't mind if they were never played again:
Into the Night - Benny Mardonis
All I Need - Jack Wagner
those are the only 2 I can think of right now - I think the 80's in general had some of the coolest songs of all time. :)

The 80's are much easier for me to think of bad songs. Two that immediately came to mind were;
Lady In Red - Chris De Burgh
I Just Called To Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder
Maybe I just hate women in red. Stevie's song was attached to The Woman In Red movie (I think)??

I've only just come across this song courtesy of my Easy Listening radio station, but I absolutely HATE HATE HATE it. They play it all the time too. It's just the same lyric over and over and over.
Oh Lord, watching the video makes me hate it even more. ;D

'Electric Avenue' and 'I Don't Wanna Dance' by Eddy Grant
Over the years, I came to realize they are OK songs, but I am still not a major fan of them

With the exception of whistledog's choices, all of the above and:
"Come On Eileen" - Dexys Midnight Runners
"Kokomo" - Beach Boys
"Make It Real" - The Jets

I love Kokomo, Make It Real, Into the Night and I Just Called to Say I Love You. :(
While I can't think of any that I flat out hate, there's ones like "Addicted to Love" that are kinda boring and don't appeal to me. I don't get how it became so popular.

I hate to say it because I loved it so much as a 5 year old, dancing around my living room to it, but "Morning Train" by Sheena Easton... horrible lyrics and that woman cannot sing!
Also:
Boys Of Summer by Don Henley (that was 80's, right?)
Don't Come Around Here No More by Tom Petty
Magic by The Cars
There are a lot of them, even though I love 80's music more than any other decade.

Aww come on man, "Boys of Summer" rocks. ;) Yeah it's from 1984 or '85. I love the black and white video too. It's funny, but that's one of those songs I remember just about everyone liking, even afterwards. If it weren't for Henley being with the Eagles, I think it could really pass a new wave song, as opposed to classic rock.
"Don't Come Around Here" scared the crap out of me (and still does in a way) ;D and "Magic" is one of the Cars best songs. Very arena rockish. "Morning Train" is catchy, that's the closest thing to country that I like.

"Oh Sheila"...hmmm, not a very good song but heavy on nostaliga since it was played at pretty much every HS dance in '85/'86. That and I went out with this chick named Sheila, so you know...Sheila-"Oh Sheila" and stuff. I think "Digital Display" and "Slide Over" are better...

The B-52's worked as a New Wave band when Ricky Wilson was still alive. Those first four allbums were awesome. However, when they pushed into mainstream pop in the mid-to-late '80s, it became excruciating.

Ok, I 've had a quick 'squiz' at songs mentioned earlier ....
Can't believe Bill singled out 'Boys of Summer' .... no question for me .... that's an all time great !
Yeah ... and Electric Avenue .... I still find it highly listenable .... think the video (which I found very appealing/cool) helped sell that one to me !
Marty McFly beat me to 'Addicted to love' .... whole heartedly agree with his comments:
While I can't think of any that I flat out hate, there's ones like "Addicted to Love" that are kinda boring and don't appeal to me. I don't get how it became so popular.
^
Yep ... whilst some of the songs already mentioned might grate a little but can be tolerable .. 'Addicted' is one I'll often change stations from if it should come up on the radio ! 8-P
I reckon its popularity must've been solely down to the video ? :-\\
Think another one I used to tune out on was Phil Collins' version of 'Groovy kind of love'. I like a lot of Phil Collins songs (and Genesis too) ... but reckoned he messed up the much better original by the Mindbenders ... :\'( ... but possibly worse for me was his cover of 'You can't hurry love' .... 8-P . How could a guy who'd given us 'In the air tonight', 'Against all odds' and the BEAUTIFUL 'One more night' .... also be responisible for that dross !? :-\\

Here in Canada, 'Rock Lobster' topped the chart in 1980

There was one good bit in that record...

1986 was not a vintage year in Britain...
We had to endure the delights of Cliff Richard & the Young Ones (which wasn't funny even then!)
Spitting Image (which gets off the hook a little, as it was an obvious p*ss-take!)

Yes, 1986 in Britain was definately a chance for non-singers to get involved - I'm still having flashbacks of Anita Dobson. I think I fancied her when I was little but she can't sing to save her life.

That is true. They were mostly disco covers - Don't leave me this way, Never can say goodbye and all that . . . He did a song called (Comment te dire) adieu as well in the late 80s and Read my lips (enough is enough) - were they covers as well?
The last I heard of him was in the mid 90s singing Cadogan's 'Hurt so good'.

'Comment' was...a 60s song by the very lovely Francoise Hardy...
...covered at the time (in an English translation called 'It Hurts To Say Goodbye') by the very lovely Vera Lynn! :D
Not sure about t'other...

"Comment Te Dire Adieu" had previously been recorded by Françoise Hardy in 1969. Don't know about "Read My Lips".

Bill, Bill, Bill, you got those lyrics all muddled and slightly wrong...
Who's Johnny? She says (she said)
and smiles and looks the other way (and smiled in her special way)
Who's Johnny? she says (she said)
you know i love her (you know I love you)
who's johnny? she says (she said)
and smiles in her special way (and tried to look the other way)
i gave her away (eyes gave her away)
The bridge (best part of the song) goes "girls like her, are very special girls, girls like her, don't rest, until you too, are a believer, til you too have caught her fever"
Hope it now makes a bit more sense... no? Anyone? ;D
And a big yeeeashhh at the Communards statement! ;D ;)

He was okay in Bronski...I suppose the voice (such as it was) suited the whole affair...
But the Communards and his solo stuff...bleh! No imagination whatsoever...
(Rather telling, as he'd slipped into covering songs big-time by this stage...)
Speaking of which... funny story. It's 1983-4ish. I'm tuning into the weekly "weird stuff hour" on the college radio station, looking for new sounds, and whoa! That's new! Unlike anything I've ever heard before! No human being could create that without a whole friggin' bank of sequencers behind him! It's more robotic than Kraftwerk! It's more up-tempo than thrash/punk! It's got more bass than this "new" hip-hop stuff coming out of New York! That bank of MIDI synths is firing off notes per bar than someone playing Tempest, Robotron, and Defender at the same time! I've found my new arcade background music!
Two bars into "Why" in 1983/4, I was hitting "Record" on the tape and pondering "Gee, I hope whoever this is doesn't ruin this by trying to sing over it..."
Two lines into the song, and I'm praying for a 12" instrumental remix. What the hell, man? That first line was bad enough, but that second line -- eew! Oh, wait, he was only singing about assault! What a relief! Argh, another great track, which nobody'll ever get to dance to because it got ruined by its vocals. Dammit.
What was it with techno and gays? It was great dance music, but with the exception of Donna Summer's "I feel Love" (arguably the grandmommy of all techno), you couldn't just spin Divine ("Native Love"), Dead or Alive ("You Spin Me Round"), Man 2 Man ("Male Stripper in a Go-Go Bar") wherever you wanted to, which was a shame. Some of this stuff still sounds up-to-date up against early 90s rave stuff like LA Style, Human Resource, and a good proportion of your generic 00s Eurodance acts. It was decades ahead of its time, and it really pushed the technological envelope.
But can you tell me whyyyyyyyyyyy these dudes relegated their entire genre to the backwaters of public consciousness for a decade by using lyrics that, to a too-large-proportion of the listening/dancing public, were largely unlistenable? Was it just some sort of side effect that techno got its start as the mutant offshoot of disco, and there were a lot of ex-disco producers who had nothing to do with their time, and since nobody was listening anyways, they just went and did their own thing?
Suppose it had gone the other way; generic dance lyrics or no lyrics at all? Dudes in suits instead of... well, whatever it was that Divine wore? :) We could have had the whole rave scene 10 years earlier. Instead of adding "analog" distortion to overproduced hair metal, grunge might have sounded like Eliminator-era ZZ Top (or even Voivod-esque metal) at 180BPM by adding "analog" guitars and aggro vocals to overproduced techno, or maybe the "grungy" reaction to it would have been to do the 8-bit thing 20 years early, where we ignore the vocals altogether and underproduce the pop-techno by using nothing but the coldest sounding square waves our machines can crank out... dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria...

1. Batdance by Prince - I can't stand any Prince song after 1986. Especially that Batman song called Batdance. It actually went to #1 on the US charts. Yuck! Do people actually buy this guy's albums?
2. Wake Me Up Before You Go Go by Wham - I like their other stuff. Were we surprised when George came out of the closet? This song goes well beyond campy.
3. Who's Johnny - I agree with you guys on this one. Just plain bad.
4. We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel - He is one of my favorite artists. I just always hated this song. Maybe its only me, but I find it annoying.
5. I Can't Dance by Genesis - I hate this song and the dumb dance-walk thing from the video. Yuck! Again, I like alot of their other stuff.
6. Let's Hear It For The Boy by Denice Williams - this song was huge in 1984. I hated this song as a kid. I still find it rather annoying.

Not really a favorite among Wonder's songs in my book, either. OTOH, his Cosby show appearance where he & Clair sang it as a duet was fairly palatable. Of course I was about 12 when I first saw it, but even seeing it today makes me laugh.
"Say Say Say" by McCartney & Jackson. Just seems lame, and if we only know then how the freak would backstab Mac, it never would've charted. Then again, Mac didn't do a bad job with him on "The Girl Is Mine".
Your Pal,
Doc

As for his image, well there is one man I find even more unsettling than Boy George and that's Marilyn. He had a hit with 'Calling your name' and he really did outweird Boy George.

I absolutely love Into the Night and think the flack he got because of it is ridiculous... No where in the song does it mention how old the guy is who loves the 16 year old girl... people just freaked out because Madrones was an adult when he sang it but that doesn't mean he was singing it as an adult.
For me I agree with the guest who posted Love Shack... I absolutely detest that song. That and Venus.

I guess it depends on your tolerance for the chorus. I love the song but I liked almost anything Winwood did in the 80s.
