Dirty Dancing

Lots of times, there'll be great individual songs from movies (i.e. "The Heat is On", "Ghostbusters", "St. Elmo's Fire", "Against All Odds", "Power of Love"), but the album itself is sorta scattered and not that great altogether. As far as full ones I like:

Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Top Gun
Pretty Woman (1990, but most of the songs are Eighties-like)
Rocky IV
The Big Chill (has some of the best '60s/early '70s music on it)

and a few others I can't think of now

Sorry to disappoint Erin  cuz you know I love Dirty Dancing- but I chose Flashdance...
It was a hard choice tho.
Howeve I will watch DD before I watch Flashdance ut listen to the Flashdance soundtrack first....

Had we been allowed two pics it would have been much easier.

Teacher Teacher - 38 Special *
One Foot Back in Your Door - Roman Holliday
Edge of A Dream - Joe Cocker *
Interstate Love Affair - Night Ranger
Foolin' Around - Freddie Mercury

Cheap Sunglasses - ZZ Top
Understanding - Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
I Can't Stop the Fire - Eric Martin and Friends
In the Jungle - The Motels
(I'm the) Teacher - Ian Hunter

both 'Teacher Teacher' and 'Edge of A Dream' were written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance

For sheer amount of good songs, it's Dirty Dancing. But for quality over quantity then it's Flashdance. I just hope I'm not forgetting any obscure gems of a soundtrack from back then.

You know, I've heard Flashdance get mentioned alot as far as great soundtracks, but most of the songs seem like fairly dull dance-pop to me. The title song and "Maniac" are total classics, but when you get past those, it's like what's left, lol. Maybe I should give it another shot, though? ;)

I forgot about Teachers, but that's a good one too with some rare songs on it. I think "One Foot in Your Door" has to be one of the cheesiest songs ever ('80s or not ;D), but it's so catchy.

I wouldn't bother too much, as you're pretty much spot on...  ;D But what great tracks those two are, esp "Maniac".

Dirty Dancing
Flashdance
The Jazz Singer
Footloose
Top Gun

I'm sure there is one or two that I forgot.

Footloose, Flashdance, and Who's That Girl. I forgot about the Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack; there were so many terrific songs from that movie. I also like the Pretty in Pink and the Breakfast Club soundtracks.

You did yes, in an 80s soundtrack thread I created maybe a month or so ago lol

For me it's a draw between the Flashdance and Purple Rain soundtracks. Flashdance has such a catchy uplifting soundtrack and Prince's sound on Purple Rain was so funky and different and innovative.

Both are really, really awesome albums.  ;D

I was too polite to mention that - haha. People really should check the last 3 pages or so to make sure we don't double post too often.  :)

Other:

Inferno...1980

Nighthawks...1981

Best Revenge...1982

Harmagedon (Anime)....1983

Murder Rock - Death Dancing...1984

Of course, this is a biased opinion as all the soundtracks for these movies were scored by Keith Emerson

Ummm, I honestly couldnt narrow it down to just one, Heres my list(Not in any order)

The Wraith - The Title Track was done by Canadian Tim Feehan, Its a little known fact that there are 2 versions of "Wheres The Fire?". One is 4:59 long and features on Tims Self Titled album, the other features on both The Wraith and The Wraith OST and is 4:22 long. I have both  :P

Over The Top 2 Great songs by the 3 song artist, Larry Greene feature in this soundtrack by Giorgio Moroder. The songs are Mind Over Matter and Take it Higher, there are some other great tracks here especially the synth piece by Moroder, The Fight another stand-out track is Bad Nite byFrank Stallone. Over all a feast of great 80's music.

Top Gun Only for the Larry Greenes track, Through The fire. The strongest song in the OST by far.

Metropolis Giorgio Moroder version. I talked about it here
There are other great soundtracks but those are the best for me.

I agree its hard to narrow down to just one but I will go with The Lostboys. It still seems timeless even today. After that I'd go with:

Streets of Fire
The Wraith
Transformers the Movie
Iron Eagle 2
Trick or Treat
Flashdance

Repo Man

Also (non-ranking order)

Times Square
Manhunter (especially the Shriekback cuts)
Last Temptation of Christ (aka. Peter Gabriel's "Passion)
The Blues Brothers
Pretty in Pink
Sid and Nancy
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
The Last American Virgin
Night Shift
After Hours*
True Stories (Talking Heads)
Wall Street (David Byrne & Brian Eno, Talking Heads tracks only)
Married to the Mob
Blue Velvet

*  Never released, but the incidental music by Howard Shore is awesome, among other music: "Air On The G String (Air From Suite No. 3)" by J.S. Bach, "Last Train to Clarkesville" by the Monkees, "Angel Baby" by Rosie & the Originals, "Chelsea Morning," by Joni Mitchell,  "Is That All There Is?" by Peggy Lee, "Pay to Cum" by Bad Brains, "One Summer Night," by the Danleers, "Over the Ocean Across the Sea" by Johnnie and Joe.

I've gone for other. I actually have two, neither of which is listed:

McVicar from 1980 (I'm bound to pick this as a Who fan)
Mike's Murder 1983.

Joe Jackson was at the height of his popularity when he did the soundtrack for Mike's Murder. I'm sure the soundtrack would have done better if only the film hadn't been so awful.

^ Ah, yes "Mike's Murder" is a good one.

Others I forgot to mention--

Major motion pictures:
Amadeus
Something Wild
Desperately Seeking Susan

Minor motion pictures:
Johnny Yesno (1983 Peter Care short film with soundtrack by Cabaret Voltaire, which is better known than the film itself)
Salvation (1987 New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, Arthur Baker, Dominique Davalos)
The Angelic Conversation (1985 Derek Jarman film, soundtrack featuring Coil & Benjamin Britten)
The Last of England (1988 Derek Jarman film  soundtrack by Simon Fisher-Turner)
Koyaanisqatsi (1983 Godfre Reggio film  soundtrack by Philip Glass)

Raiders of the Lost Ark (John Williams)

  9½ Weeks (Various)
  Batman (Danny Elfman)
  Midnight Express (Giorgio Moroder)
  The Bounty (Vangelis)

"Nine 1/2 Weeks"  the film that made kink safe for yuppies, did have a great soundtrack, including one of Bryan Ferry's best songs "Slave to Love," which itself has nothing to do with tethers and dog collars.
Others I liked:
Billie Holiday: Strange Fruit
Eurythmics: This City Never Sleeps
Brian Eno: Music for Airports
Roger Eno: Voices
J.M. Jarre: Arpegiator
Devo: Bread and Butter (w. Parks/Turnbow, IMDb incorrectly credits original artists the Newbeats on Nine 1/2 weeks soundtrack)

Giorgio Moroder did a great job with the all-electronic score for "Midnight Express."  The "Chase" theme was a disco club hit in itself and was used as bumper music for years for Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell.

I never saw "The Bounty," but Vangelis' soundtrack for "Blade Runner" is excellent (if you like Blade Runner).

9½ Weeks is an excellent soundtrack.  Hell, I even like the John Taylor song...!

Love the movie, too.  You know, the movie actually inspired me to read the book (true story) that it's based on.  Wowsers, that's some weird stuff.  The movie ain't the half of it...

I went over to IMDb and submitted a correction for Devo's "Bread and Butter."  Don't know it they'll post it.
