I recall the stacking tube things you're talking about. No idea of the name.

That bristle block post got me thinking to my preschool days. Duplo legos, lincoln logs, tinker toys, my fischer price castle with the staircase that moved and the pink dragon.
The blocks in question were clear, greenish, reddish/marroon blue sections of pvc/acrylic pipe. 2 - 3 inches? The top and bottom had 4? slits on it, and you could link them/ then stack them and make little walls, creations and such.
Also I vaguely remember a shortlived building block 1985? that was completely little foldable robomen. Each roboman folded into a little brick, and you could build things out of them.

i came up with it on a google search for building toys or something? i couldn't find anything else either... :-[
