Same goes for MJ's 'Bad' LP (hyped released that year), which was the beginning of the long, slippery slide...

One of the greatest & most underrated pop singer/songwriters came 'Out of the Blue'...
Now pushin' 40 (still looking great), the record of being the youngest artist writing, producing, & recording a #1 hit in 1988 with "Foolish Beat" at age 17 (wrote it at 14) still holds

About 20 years ago I was starting my sophomore year in high school, just got my braces on, sporting bright yellow Chuck Taylors and grooving to the likes of Depeche Mode's "Strangelove", "True Faith" by New Order and LL Cool J's Bigger And Deffer album. 8)

I was 16 in 1987 and just entering my junior year in high school - one of the most signifcant moments in music that year:
Guns n Roses Roses released their first album, Appetite for Destruction, featuring the cool song "Welcome to the Jungle"; I kind of see them as the link between the hair band and alternative genres of music 8)

I saw an episode of "Soul Train" from 1987
Jody Watley's "Looking For A New Love" video was shown 8)
Only familiar with a few songs played since...
Chico DeBarge performed, though not familiar with him and I didn't know Rose Royce were still around... and wore the worst outfits, even for the era :P Not to mention I'm not fond of disco, which they were popular in the 70s.
Then again, I was watching "Muppet Babies" & "Heathcliff" at the time

I do remember 2 short-lived sodas that debuted 20 years ago: Pepsi AM and 7-Up Gold (the latter one looked pretty gross, IMO)

I probably did. I just know that after I was operated on, my mom got me some frozen yogurt and I didn't feel like eating any of it; my mouth was all swollen. However, I was determined to watch game shows on TV that night.

In January 1988 I was in the 2nd grade and don't recall a whole lot from my life then...but I do remember learning how to write in cursive at the time. The thing is, my second grade teacher commonly shifted to cursive when she wrote certain things on the board, especially words that ended in "-al", which irked some of the kids in my class, so we begged her to teach us cursive.
This date (January 23rd) fell on a Saturday, so I obviously didn't go to school that day.

It seems like there is a Chuck -E- Cheese conspiracy of sorts... my fave arcade was replaced by a phone retailer... no more riding our bikes through the vacant lots to get there a la some kind of Bridge to Terabithia.
You had to be careful in the ball pit because there was always the rumor that some kid puked in there... that kid was yours truly... Stinky!

I'd be interested in seeing those piccys from Chuck E. Cheese. Yeah, it was there in the late 70s for sure, that's when we used to go there. I never realized that that's the same place where Old Navy is now...
Now that I think about it I know I still have an old token from Chuck E. Cheese laying around somewhere...
I'll have to find some of them. Many of them have been scattered about, but they do have some good background images of Chuck E himself and those singing puppets in the background.
Yeah, the one in the Willows has since been replaced by Old Navy. It may have been something before that as well, but I do believe Old Navy took over after it shut down.
Wow! I wonder if that token is a collector item now??

Yesterday I was going to post in this thread, as I have a fond memory of July 9th, 1988...
I had my 8th birthday party at home, with boys from my 2nd grade class. We had a "sports" theme to the party; my parents set up an obstacle course in our backyard, in which we had to bat a ball off a tea, crawl under a towel suspended between two chairs, jump over a bucket of water, and run around a series of orange plastic cones. My cake was vanilla, and it had a "golf" motif, with a golfer figurine posing to make a putt. If I can get a picture of it scanned in, I will share it with you guys!

August 28 1988: 70 people die and over 500 are injured at the international Airshow at Ramstein Airbase after one of the most shocking mid-air collisions ever.
The death toll could have been (much) lower, if only burn victims would have been treated appropriately before transport and there had been some sort of coordination/communication between different groups of aid workers.
It is worth noting that only "real" burn victims received some sort of financial compensation. There has never been any (financial) compensation for those who lost a dear one in the disaster.

I don't think so. The snow wasn't as thick as it gets in other parts of the world. I'd like to share a picture at some point, though.
On February 26, 1989, I went to go see a play adaptation of 'Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory'. A boy in my third grade class was in it, playing the role of Mike T.V., the character who was so obsessed with television. When it came time for his "shrinking" scene, he jumped off the stage and was replaced by a tiny doll.

March 21, 1989...Tuesday...after school I was invited by one of my 3rd grade classmates to his birthday celebration at Skateland, a roller skating arena. Several other members of my third grade class were invited, too...and showed up. I arrived at Skateland not knowing how to roller skate very well, so one of my friends (who was among the oldest in the class) showed me how. Pretty soon, I was confident about roller skating, and it was something I enjoyed...so anytime I went back there I had a great time!

Anyho, on Tuesday, May 9, 1989...I took part in a spelling bee with more than 100 other kids from various schools in the Los Angeles area. This spelling bee was held at a shopping mall, in the evening...and with 140 total kids, each one had to wait a mighty long time to spell his or her next word. But as more kids were eliminated, we didn't have to wait quite as long. When I was asked to spell the word "celebrity", I think I may have been feeling tired, since what I thought was the correct spelling didn't sound right. So I decided to bail out and go home. That was the only time I was in a spelling bee that I did NOT win.

July 20th 1989 – Burma's ruling junta puts opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest.
Sometime during that year, the country's official name was changed to Myanmar...but lots of people still refer to it by its old name.

Absolutely!!
I went to summer day camp for three straight years: 1988, 1989, and 1990.
In '89 I had lots of fond memories of day camp. I made several puppets, and played a certain video game just about every day.

Yep. Among the activities we had at that summer daycamp was a gameroom with various arcade games (and all of them operated in free mode, that way we didn't need to come up with our own coins and pay for playing them). I remembered one in particular: SonSon. At the time it looked like an interesting game, so I played it just about every day and did pretty well on it. And just a couple weeks or so ago I found some Youtube clips of the game. Viewing them brought back the memories.

I believe that Tuesday, September 12, 1989, was the day I officially began 4th grade. Probably one of my worst school years ever.
Also, it was my first ever experience with public school.

Around this time I was sort of dating a girl that the words "high-maintenance" was made for. She drove me nuts. Never seen anyone so moody in my life.

During the second week of December 1989 I learned how to make Baggie wreaths. That was one of the few good things about my fourth grade year. However, I didn't get very far on my project in school because I was sick during the last three days of the week (December 13, 14, and 15)...which was the last week of school before the winter break. So the other kids in the class finished it up for me, and I made sure to thank them when I got back to school......in the 90's.

Well, I did actually keep a diary for a while during the 1990's. Most things stick in my mind for years to come, especially if I remember them well.
