Subject: Why is Deborah Gibson considered a "joke" by most people? And explain why?
Written By: woops on 09/19/07 at 7:42 pm
No, I'm not trying to be like that BS fan from YouTube ::)
Why most people consider Deborah Gibson's music a joke and don't take her serious as an artist?
I know she's pegged as a teen idol, but unlike many she actually wrote/produced her own material and created some of the best pop songs of the 1980's like "Only In My Dreams", "Shake Your Love" and "Lost In Your Eyes". Also other songs that weren't released like "Red Hot", "Play The Field". "Silence Speaks (A Thousand Words)", and "Should've Been The One".
She still records great music for the past two decades despite the ever changing music trends and being ignored by radio. In the mid 1990's, her "Think With Your Heart" album could've knocked that annoying Celine Dion off the A/C charts with songs like "For Better Or Worse" & "Didn't Have The Heart" and 2001's "MYOB" featuring "Your Secret" & "What You Want" wouldn't be out of place with songs from J Lo.
Also share your opinions about her. Good or bad and be honest.

A pop singer/songwriter from the 1980's known for hits like "Only In My Dreams", "Shake Your Love",
"Lost In Your Eyes", and "Foolish Beat", which made her the youngest artist to write, produce, and record a #1 hit in 1988 at age 17. During her reign as pop princess, she had 9 top 40 hits and made black hats and vests a popular fashion trend.

Born Deborah Ann Gibson in 1970, she wrote songs since she was a small child and was taught to play piano by Mortin Estrin, who also taught Billy Joel. She was part of a chior that performed at the Metropolitan Opera House at age 8 with the likes of Placido Domingo.
Deb also appeared on tv commercials, some community theatre and started recording music at age 12, which she was signed to Atlantic Records in 1986 at age 16.

After her "Electric Youth" fizzled, she became a successful stage actress who appeared on musicals like "Les Miserables", "Grease", and "Cabaret". She still releases good albums like "Think With Your Heart" & "MYOB" despite not being on a major label anymore. Though unfortunately, most people still think of her as the '80's pop princess.

Unlike current young pop acts like Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and even Ashley Tisdale, she actually has talent and is more focused on her career as an actress & singer instead of getting attention for nothing. Not to mention that she still looks great without looking like a human Barbie doll like Pamela Anderson.

As for her "name change", she never liked to be called 'Debbie', even as a teenager, and always have preferred to be callled "Deborah". Though unfortunately, most people think she changed it to distant herself from the past or whatever, but if you've noticed in the liner notes/credits of her early albums it states, "written/produced by Deborah Gibson".
Funny how most people act if Mark Walhburg was never "Marky Mark"... ::)

I don't really know why it matters. If you like her...then you like her...who cares if everybody else thinks she is a joke. Hey, I still listen to music by New Kids On The Block...and most people think that they are a joke too...I say, to each his own. ;)

I listened to and loved Debbie Gibson - when I was 15.
Just like I listened to and loved Tiffany.
But I grew out of them. Can't stand DG music now and if Tiff had another album I wouldn't rush out to buy it that's for sure.
IMHO, no artist is a joke unless they make themselves into one.
To me, DG has a completely different fan base now, but she is one of those artists that just gets on my last nerve.

She will always be a teen idol of the 80s. The 90s sucked her up, spit her back out and she never recovered. She still releases albums, sure, but do they sell? no! Does today's teen rush out to buy her lastest album? no! Will she ever be back in the Top 40? Probably not, but as long as you like her, that's all that matters :)
I liked DG in the 80s, but I probably wouldn't rush out and buy any of her new material, but I will gladly listen to her 80s works

Many artists have their day, and they just end up falling out of favor due to the everchanging tastes. This is just natural when it comes to music over the years. It doesn't mean her output is not quality work. It's just not on the popular demand list anymore. I doubt kids growing up right now know who she is. Probably the only reason kids even know of Paula Abdul is because of American Idol, and who knows, if she put an album out now, she might actually gain sales since she's regained a bit of a fan base.
I think some artists know how to reinvent themselves very cleverly, too. Someone like Kylie Minouge who had just a few hits in the '80s, reinvented herself in the early 2000's and had another hit because of it.
Sometimes it's just pure luck. I have nothing against Debbie/Deborah Gibson. I wish her luck in getting back on the charts, but unfortunately every artist has their lags.
One last example: Frank Sinatra went out of favor in the early '50s and had a sagging career. Luckily, a role in "From Here to Eternity" earned him an Oscar win (or at least nomination) and then he was back on top again - and not for even singing, lol. Look at Marky Mark (now Mark Wahlberg) Who would have ever thought Marky Mark would be such a good actor!!??

People think her music is cheesy, and that her image in the 80's was dorky.
She might have continued to be sucessful past 1990 if stations played her songs, but they probably considered her a has-been.
I am a Deborah fan myself. I'm not a BIG fan, since I haven't bought anything past Anything Is Possible, but I really like her music. And I'm only 18, and I discovered her at 16, so she can pull in newer, young fans.....

First off "woops" Marky Mark became a succesfull hollywood actor and with him becoming a successful actor it set him apart from the "Good Vinbations" Marky Mark.
I agree a tune like "What You Want" wouldn;t be out of place with Jennifer Lopez's music in the early 00's but Jennifer Lopez(1999-early 2003) like Debbie Gibson( 1987-1989) had her successful run musically and now both aren;t relevant at all in todays music scene.
As for young starlets like Britney spears or Lindsay Lohan. Lets start with Britney first she was very successful musically from 1999-2001 and probably one of the most popular acts of all time because she achieved big time popularity in those 3 years but I think the publicity stunts just to keep ger popularity up almost notably her sexy image that she created caught up to her in the long run in that the press and the media is just following her every move because of the sexy image that she created for herself from 1999-2001.
As for Lindsay I hope she gets rehabilitated because she could die if she keeps on going the path that she's going down currently.
As for Asheley Tisadale she seems like a nice girl there's nothing with her.
I don;t view Debbie Gibson as a joke because she has done other things besides music like performing on "Broadway" and she seems like a cool person. Isn't she from Long Island(NY) because she seems your typical Long Island girl to me. I wonder if she's at least half-italian becsuse she looks it in some of the more up to date photos that "Woops" posted.
As for her songs I have heard from Debbie Gibson I have heard "Shake Your Love", "Lost In Your Eyes", Electric Youth, Out Of The Blue, and "What You Want" but I haven't really her 90's music at all. "Lost In Your Eyes" still sounds pretty credible though.

Well, I haven't heard any of her music in awhile. So I couldn't really answer the question.
But I have seen alot of things on Youtube get bashed by one person or another, whether it be music or television, video games, etc.
I remember something I seen when I viewed some clip from The Andy Milanokis(?) show on Youtube. I decided to read the comments and there was one person who started arguing(he hates the show) with someone else(who loves the show). That was a case of someone wanting attention. I've also seen a video that someone uploaded bashing fans of something else, it was obvious this person was wanting attention(even a in the form of a flame post war) and it worked, he has 1000+ comments on that vid.
Back on subject....
I do remember a few of her songs on these lists. Her songd have never annoyed me.

I liked DG back in the day. I still listen to Lost in your Eyes and Foolish Beat but whenever anyone mentions her the first song I think of is Only in My Dreams and that song is so bubble gummy that I find myself ::) before I remember her good stuff. Except for judging American Jrs. a few years ago I haven't seen or heard much about her (except on this board ;) ) so I didn't even know she had a new albums out. I don't know what kind of music she is doing now. I am not much of a music phile. I have to hear a song before I buy a cd so if it isn't played on the radio or on a tv show i'll never hear it.

Several of her later music videos/performances are on YouTube.
They're good, except for the embarassing "Shock Your Mama", which was from when her label wanted her to be "edgy". Though "Losin' Myself" is a great/overlooked song.
She's mostly pop/adult contemporary, obiviously mature.

I don't think she's a joke. She was a teenage pop star. She had her 15 minutes of fame and that was that. It's better to fadeaway than stay in the news via scandal, like Britney. She's a joke!

I think she's very talented, and I like her, but I'm gonna have to agree with Erin - if you like her, you like her. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks. I'm sure there are lots of artists that I like that other people don't. Variety is what makes the world go 'round.

i had a chance to meet MS GIBSON a few years ago.
she was signing autographs a booth at CONSUMER ELECTRONIC SHOW in las vegas.
it was a small company so shock of all shocks as i was walking down this big convention hall and this face made me do a double turn.
of course, i was lazy and didnt bring my dig cam NOR my camcorder.
and like any fan, i gushed like i was back in the 80s...
i didnt tell her that i had the hots for her, even though she was only 16 then and i was 18/19 when her first album got popular and i started buying her 12" singles.
all i got was a signed photo of her.
and it doesnt look like her anymore. so much so that when i hung the photo in my office at work, i got lots of question who that is.
my first question is "does the song ONLY IN MY DREAMS, ELECTRIC YOUTH mean anything you?" lol...

You know, I re-read this and find that I have to say the following (keeping in mind that it is my opinion alone)
Society might not find DG a joke compared to how this board might find her a joke.
Joke really isn't the right word to use, but when we get overkill topics about her, she turns into a joke.
Same thing goes for decadeology - same horse, different color.
Maybe if there weren't so many threads being constantly made about her, I would have more interest.
Again, just my opinion. ;)

eh I never heard of her before I saw her name mentioned millions of times on this board, I've sampled her music it's alright but I don't really see the difference between her and Britney or something.

Well said. Even though they say any publicity is good, I think it's kinda the other way around with superstar examples like Britney. She was arguably quite a bit bigger and more of a pop cultural force in 1999-2002 than Debbie was in her 1987-1989 peak. Sometimes fading away and resuming somewhat of a normal, non-hectic life I would imagine keeps people more sane, although everyone is different and some have handled it well.
Like I've said and other people have said on here countless times, there's nothing wrong with DG, but the fact is that everyone has the image of her being a first wave teenybopper. Whether it's fair or not, alot of stars get automatically tied to the first image the public had of them. Plus, I'm sure she herself would tell you that she'd rather star in the occasional musicals (or whatever else she's doing these days) and be more behind the scenes than a huge pop star anyway. All due respect intended woops, but I think you want her to have a big mainstream comeback more than she does. ;D

She was like the 80s version of Britney Spears. All decades have that teenage pop singer who takes the world by storm, then fades out of the charts after that 15 minutes of fame is up. Sadly, Britney has survived longer than expected; longer than we want LOL

I can actually remember when she first came out in 1988, and I think I've heard her being talked about on here now way more than back when she was actually popular! Well, I obviously wasn't hanging out with, say the Junior High crowd when I was 6 (I had some babysitters that age, though), but you get the idea, lol.

Gibson still releases music and currently recording an album with Cinderella's drummer Fred Coury (who's producing some tracks) and also producer Neal Pogue (Outkast, Pink)
She's currently toured casinos/hotels singing showtunes & past hits and now judging an online talent show.
Her recent song (not sure if it'll be on her album) "Famous" (is linked... on bottom paragraph mentioning Britney & Lindsay on first post since the song is a slam on party girls)...

I was more into "Muppet Babies" & "Heathcliffe" when she first came 'out of the blue' 20 years ago...
Britney & Deb are far different musically, from different eras, and cater to different demographics.
That's like comparing Lindsay Lohan with Alyssa Milano
