Subject: Debarge Song Poll
Written By: robby76 on 08/18/07 at 12:23 am
Debarge were a decent 80s pop rnb group and I've always loved them. My vote went to the beautiful ballad "Who's Holding Donna Now?", with "Who's Johnny" coming in a close second.

My faourite will forever be 'Rhythm of the Night' :)

Cool! That's certainly more than I have! ;D
We had their "Rhythm of the Night" cassette in the 80s. All I have now is their 20th Century Greatest Hits cd - but that's got most of their best stuff. :)
Let's also not forget their appearance on Punky Brewster in 1987... check out the wild hair and cringeworthy moves. :D

"Rhythm Of The Night"
"Who's Johnny" second
DeBarge was a group, I thought it was a name of the singer
Probablyit's like Nine Inch Nails, which the group refers to the singer or whatever (I'm confused now)...

The group was comprised of siblings: Bunny, El (lead vocals), Marty, Randy and James DeBarge
When El started to be seen as the most popular one, they became credited as "El DeBarge with DeBarge" until El went solo in 1986
James made headlines when he married Janet Jackson in 1984. The marriage only lasted 7 months
Chico DeBarge, who was not in DeBarge with his siblings, had a solo career of his own, scoring a 1986 hit with "Talk to Me"

Rhythm of the Night
in the early 90's we were at Disneyland riding the rides in the Tomorrowland section and a live band performed on an outdoor stage. I think they were called Airplay and they did Rhythm of the Night. It was really good and a good place to to perform a feel good song like that. They sounded quite a bit like DeBarge too. I was impressed.

I like Debarge's music in Miami Vice; don't know much about him. He is from my home state, Michigan. Heard he just got arrested...

I loved DeBarge!!!!
Faves "All This Love" and their other ballads, "Time Will Reveal", "Dream" (which has been sampled in too many rap songs!!), and "Love Me in a Special Way".

I have all the Debarge LP's in original form but out of the bunch of songs listed above, I'm gonna pick "Time Will Reveal" as it's a just a beautifully constructed ballad with a great vocal performance by El Debarge showing off his falsetto skills.
Wear It Well should get a mention too, the 12" mix in particular.
After the original lineup of the group disbanded in 1986, El Debarge has been releasing 4 solo albums, the last being "Heart Mind And Soul" in 1994.
Bunny Debarge had an ill fated attemt at a solo career in 1987 with one LP.
Chico Debarge did release two albums in the 80s before he went to jail. He managed to revitalize his career in 1997 with "long Time No See" and had been recording steadily ever since.
Bobby Debarge died from AIDS in 1995.

Like Hall & Oates many of their songs just didn't make it out of the '80s with me, but they do have some that I still like
I Like It (1982) -- The one I voted for.
All This Love (1983) -- The acoustic guitar solo is the part I always liked the most. Not much acoustic guitar heard in '80s songs.
After the Dance (1991) -- This time it's the jazz group Fourplay with El DeBarge doing a great cover of a Marvin Gaye song.
