Subject: The 80s TV on DVD Thread
Written By: whistledog on 06/27/07 at 9:59 pm
I know some of you collect these, so I thought i'd do a sticky a topic about what 80s shows are on DVD and which ones are forthcoming. Official releases only; no bootlegs ...
I've left out cartoons; I may do a separate thread for those as there are so many. Some shows left over from the 70s, or that spanned into the 90s, I've only included the seasons with 80s episodes. All releases are based on Region 1 (US/Canada). This is a rough list, but will soon be complete. If I've missed any, please let me know :)

Here is the sleeve art for "Family Ties" - Season 2. I am so excited about this. I liked Steven Keaton so much better with that thick beard

I can't wait until October! I really hope the release doesn't get pushed back. And yes, I think Michael Gross looked a lot nicer with his beard, too! :)

I totally forgot about that one. It's now added to the list :)
They would be fun ones to get. They've been out long enough that I wonder if Wal-Mart might soon get them in their bargain bins. Every summer, and around Christmas Time, they get TV on DVD box sets in a 2/$35 deal, but boy do they go fast

I'm surprised Paramount is releasing it so soon. Ii seems like Season 1 just came out. Sales for Season 1 must have been through the roof :)

It seems like all Wal-Marts are different. When they get them, they sure don't last long. I went there and got 'Mad About You' and 'Just Shoot Me' and went back the next day to get some MacGyver sets, and my god they'd all been picked over :o They had like atleast 25 different shows in various seasons and all that was left was The Jeffersons, Roswell and The 4400

I mean, we have some that are like only $20....but none that are 2 for such and such a price.

Voyagers, The
I can't wait for Family Ties S2 either. I skipped on the first season but am definitely getting this second one - if only for the improved theme song... "sha la la la"!

Sorry Whistle, just one more small technicality. Punky S3 was actually 87-88 as they had a gap year when it went into syndication. Loving the list by the way - it shall be my bible!

Been added :)
I like the sha la la part as well. It was briefly heard in S1, but for most part, the original theme was used. The Johnny Mathis / Deniece Williams one didn't become a regular fixture until S2

I'd totally forgotten it went into syndication. What's awesome about the Punky sets is that they contain some of the "It's Punky Brewster" cartoons. One of these days, i'm gonna have to start getting those.
There are so many shows on DVD that I still want to come like 'Webster', 'Perfect Strangers', 'Valerie / The Hogan Family' and 'Newhart'. I would love to see Webster again :)

The Johnny mathis / Deniece Williams version will always take me back to a sunny Saturday afternoon in the mid80s... bliss!

I did love Webster but not too sure how it'll hold up. I of course would watch it in reruns religiously, but not sure I'd go to the expense of a dvd set. As for the others you mentioned, they're all on my list of wants! Newhart is a strange one as I remember loving it but can only ever remember vague bits of it.
The Punky sets really are value for money... don't forget you also get great cast interviews and even a tray of stickers with Season 2... ;D

lol @ stickers. That's awesome! It's always cool to see what bonuses come with TV sets.
'Night Court' S1 comes with a bonus DVD with an episode of 'Perfect Strangers' and 'Whose Line is it Anyway?'
'Murphy Brown' S1 comes with a bonus DVD with an episode of 'My Sister Sam' and the short-lived 90s sitcom 'Room For Two' with Patrcia Heaton and Linda 'Alice' Lavin

Life Goes On season 1 (1989)
Quantum Leap Season 1(1989)
Anything but love Season 1 (1989)
the Adventures of Superboy (1988)
A Different World (1987)
Steven Speilberg presents Amazing Stories (1985)
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (sure season on was 1979 but the DVD set has both seasons so the 2nd 80-81 is in the set too)

Little House on the Prairie season 6 is 79-80 and I think the dVDs are up to season 9

I can't believe I'd forgotten Little House. And I had no idea Buffalo Bill was even on DVD. Of all shows, I never thought that one as it was so short lived
only 1 episode of the Simpsons aired in the 80s which was the pilot in 1989. It didn't officially become a series until 1990

I'll give you... I guess I just counted them as earlier because of the Tracy Ullman show.... they've been around so long its hard to believe that the pilot was done in 89.

From what I remember there was talk of a second season of Night Court. Personally I'm partial to the 1986-87 season.
Season 1 had poor sales, which means Season 2 will be delayed for a very long time, or it won't ever get a release, unless the DVD company that released it sells the rights to release further seasons to another company
This same thing happened with Season 1 of 'Murphy Brown', 'Growing Pains', 'Charles in Charge', Whos the Boss', '227' and the American release of 'Kate and Allie' :(
I wanna say the same thing also happened with 'TJ Hooker' and 'Simon and Simon', but I can't find any info to confirm this

All those DVDs ended with only a single season..? That sucks...
I don't know about the others, but I understand season two of Murphy Brown is being held up with music licensing horsepucky...

I'm still surprised that Season 1 had all the original music. Murphy Brown was a big motown fan, so each episode opened with a Motown song, and in several episodes, real motown songs can be heard. This makes me wonder .. if Murphy Brown could make all the actual music appear on the DVD, why couldn't WKRP?

I'm still surprised that Season 1 had all the original music. Murphy Brown was a big motown fan, so each episode opened with a Motown song, and in several episodes, real motown songs can be heard. This makes me wonder .. if Murphy Brown could make all the actual music appear on the DVD, why couldn't WKRP?
Sure. Look at Miami Vice, well, I haven't viewed the DVDs, but I'm reading time and time, again, that most, if not all, the original music remains intact in the season releases. And these songs, as you know, were/are pretty big hits by major, well established artists. People are constantly comparing it with the WKRP release when arguing about music issues...
Another thing that has me scratching my head - Happy Days season 1 includes the original "Rock Around the Clock" opening (I think this tune was used in the first two or three seasons...) The season two openings are Gimbel and Fox's "Happy Days"...
I don't know why I sweat the details on this sh_t. It's like asking Palestinians and Israelis to get along...
Argh..! http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1193336/banghead.gif

So far, WKRP is the big one with the most changes music wise of any TV show on DVD, and what gets me is why people are complaining about it. I mean a show about a Top 40 radio station? I knew the changes were coming and after watching the S1 set, the only one that bothered me was Jennifer's doorbell. The rest I didn't even notice, and all in all, I thought it was a well packaged set :)
'Happy Days' by Pratt and McClain (as wrtten by Gimbel and Fox) didn't come in until Season 3, so it looks like Paramount is getting the public used to it early. All the original music is on the Miami Vice sets yes, but I think in that case, Michael Mann went out of his way to make sure it was all there cause the music of Miami Vice was partly what helped make the show what it was. This was why the Miami Vice Seasons 1, 2 and 3 had a big gap in release dates. When Universal finished acquiring the rights to all the music, they released Seasons 4, 5 and 6 all in 2007 just 4 months apart
I honestly think that if the original music was not on the Miami Vice sets, fans would probably start riots lol

You're lucky to even be able to see reruns. On the channels I get, I haven't seen this show probably since it went off the air in '93, which is good because it makes me want to get this even more.
When 'Benson' S1 came to DVD, I enjoyed it so much, mostly in part because I hadn't seen the show in reruns since the very early 90s, so it was like a bigger blast from hte past than it normally would have been, had I seen reruns all along :)

I wish it would get released right now. I want it so bad I can taste it.
With another TV set I bought a while back came a bonus Warner Brothers commemorative DVD that had an episode of Perfect Strangers on it, and when I watched it, I was instantly transported back to the 80s when I used to watch this show all the time. It was great! 8)
I loved Balki's stuffed sheep Dmitri, or the dance of joy, or that one episode where Balki got hypnotized and thought he was Elvis. The best episode was after Larry and Balki moved into a house with their new brides Jennifer and Mary-Anne, they are in their backyard building a gazebo, and it was filmed in the style of an old Laurel and Hardy picture ;D

I also have "Three's Company"- the first Jenilee Harrison season. ;D This is the season where they restricted Suzanne Sommers to one set by herself , and she only talked on the phone in the show. She was still in the intro, though, and Jenilee wasn't!! :\'(
The dvd's also have an interview with Jenilee. She has had a nose job and is totally unrecognizable. It's the "Jennifer Grey" phenomenon. ;D

I have a book about the show, Come and Knock On Our Door, which goes into great detail about the Somers/ABC war. It's written by Chris Mann who also narrates the commentary for the Three's Company DVDs...
As popular as her character was and as high as her star rose, Sommers forgets that the star of the show and it's center of gravity was John Ritter, not her, and not Joyce DeWitt...
The Three's Company Behind the Camera docudrama was supposedly written by Joyce DeWitt...

If you want to complete your 'Riptide' collection, Season 3 will hit stores in February 2008, which surprises me as Season 2 just came out last month :o
These releases are by VEI, the same company that distributed 'Gimme A Break', 'Kate and Allie' and 'Hardcastle and McCormick' which means (you guessed it) exclusive Canadian releases. So far, only Season 1 has been released to the USA, and you know what? I like the Season 1 artwork for the USA release better than the Canadian one

I wish they would release later Night Court seasons. From last I heard they release season 1 and a couple of mixed seasons. I'd really like to see season one of the Charmings though.
Night Court was first released in a single disc "Favourites" edition that had like 5 episodes from various seasons. When Season 1 finally came out, it didn't sell well, so WB decided not to release any further seasons :(
I too would love to see The Charmings. Though it was such a short-lived show, if it did come to DVD, both Season 1 and 2 would be released as "The Complete Series"

Streethawk One of my favorite shows ever but to the general public - A 13 episode flop. I co-run an SH website and through a friend who works at Universal studios got this final reply re: A Dvd release.
Hi Ryan
Well, it took even longer than anticipated to get information; I had to wait to get the attention of the one person who looks after old TV series.
Like everybody else in Hollywood, Universal is driven by the bottom line; and as expected Universal press office say there's no great USA demand for the Streethawk series to be sold on DVD, consequently they don't sell any memorabilia. Had it been produced by an indie company you might have been able to buy a copy of an episode or even the entire series, but as Universal television made it they dictate what happens to it.
The only thing they can offer is selected excerpts for licencing rights - cost negotiable - the kind of thing you'd expect to see on a programme about Streethawk, or documentary on classic US television series. I have no idea what thirty seconds or a minute will cost but it won't be cheap: contact female staff Roni: (USA) 818 777 1273.
Still, at least research proves there's no DVD in sight.
Kind regards
You know, It really is the final nail in the coffin for Streethawk fandom. We have a petition going to get the show on dvd:

We have a petition going to get the show on dvd:
http://www.petitiononline.com/shawkdvd/petition.html
jimdk from the ill-fated and now inactive www.streethawk.co.uk site created this one:

"No Great Demand" - Dont kid me............
sorry but I don't remember Streethawk... can you refresh my memory?

I just had an interesting observation ... I was watching the S1/S2 set of 'Perfect Strangers' and in one episode, Balki is singing a chorus of Tina Turner's 'What's Love Got to Do With It'. Suddenly, I was like "I wonder how much the producers had to pay to keep that in there" LOL
Here's others ...
♦ In a S2 episode of 'Family Ties', Elyse sings Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' in a failed attempt to revive her folk music career
♦ In a S1 episode of 'Growing Pains', Mike and Jason sing 'Dancing in the Dark' upon leaving a Springsteen concert
♦ In a S3 episode of 'Gimme A Break', Katie is seen dancing to a muzak version of Michael Sembello's 'Maniac'

I've been wondering about that, too. In another episode of PS, Balki is singing the chorus to "Freeway of Love" by Aretha Franklin. I haven't gone through the entire DVD set yet, but I could swear Balki was also singing the chorus to "Material Girl", only to sing "Material Boy", in another episode.

Well, except Ms. drama queen, Molly. She was better in the movies, IMO...

The 2nd season of it seems like a totally different show. New dorm setting, new cast member (Nancy McKeon) though the others like Julie and Molly did make recurring appearances. Sometime in a much later season (Season 6 I think it was), they all made a cameo appearance with the exception of Molly, saying she was off following her dream (At the time, she was a big movie star)

I'd wish they'd hurry up with releasing the rest of Facts of Life on dvd. I really want to get from Season 4 onwards.
I keep contemplating buying the 3rd season but isn't that whole year a bit "serious" - they dealt with some big issues in season 3. I prefer the more lighthearted later seasons.
Oh and I've been updating my little blog daily - still a bit more to go but almost there.

Over Our Heads wasn't in the mall...it was in the same location as Edna's Edibles...it was just a store front along the street...kind of like main street.
I loved season 3 the issue filled eps were my favorites
Fear Strikes Back...where Nat is attacked after leaving a costume party.. my fav episode
Legacy where Blair learns her grandfather had slaves so she wants to act as Tootie's slave ;D
Runaway Tootie is nearly drafted into prostitution after running off to New York to prove she's old enough to be in the city alone.
New York, New York where both Blair & Jo learn they have outgrown their old friends...and old lives.
great stuff....it's these episodes that really got us caring about the girls so that even when the show got fluffly later on we still wanted things to work out for them.

New York New York was the one where Blair and Jo spend a weekend with old friends in New York. Blair's friend is a spoiled brat who is shocked when Blair suggests they make their own tuna salad..... I finally got my copy of 'Stingray - The Complete Series'. No store had it except Sunrise Records, the most expensive of all the chain stores in Canada. It was still under $30 which I was surprised about. 5 discs; 23 action packed episodes

Nick Mancuso stars as a mysterious former government agent known only as Ray. He travels around in his 1965 Black Stingray, helping people in need, and instead of accepting cash, all he wants in return is for anyone he helps to one day return him a favour. 2 seasons, 1985-1987. From Stephen J. Cannell, the creative force behind such classic shows like 'The Rockford Files', 'The A-Team', 'Hardcastle and McCormick' and 'Riptide'

Checking out Square Pegs. Yep, it's an early 80s time capsule alright, complete with a gazillion pop-culture refererences, skinny ties, baggy sweaters, big hair, high-waisted Jordache, Pac Man, New Wave, striped polos, lunchboxes and the usual teen banality of the time...
The lingo, alone, is a reminder that 1982 was definately another world. And I barely recognize it...
The show itself is, IMO, not...that...good... Or maybe it's just me...

Okay, the problem with Square Pegs is that I'm not getting the humor which consists, mostly, of the digs that the characters take at each other. The humor isn't set-up for you nice and neat and simple, you have to look for it, so I'm just starting to clue-in. And there's ALOT of contemporary pop culture references used. And I mean ALOT! - Three Stooges, Monty Python, ordinary TV commercials, music, movies, sports, Reaganomics (there's even a reference to "Ketchup as a Vegetable") &etc. If you're not familiar with these, you're NOT going to get about 90% of the show...
It took a couple of viewings and I was in the 8th grade during Square Pegs' brief run, so it's starting to take me back just a little. Goes to show how much TV has changed (whether for better or worse is up to the viewer). I noticed that some of the students have covered their school books with the old, tried-and-true paper grocery bag book covers that you had to bring to class and construct, yourself, on the first day of school. Anyone remember that..?

I did that very briefly in the 7th grade, but they kept falling apart, so I thought, "What's the point?". ;D

I'm still hoping Sony will release more seasons of the Facts of Life.....but I got a feeling it might not happen. :(
According to Sony, we'll just have to contend with seasons 1, 2, and 3 of "Facts of Life" and seasons 1 and 2 of "Diff'rent Strokes". Don't know the exact reason, but sony says even though they promised they were going to put the rest of "Facts of Life" and its three movies out on DVD, they ultimately decided to pull the plug on it, so to speak. One of the more popular theories is because of the success of the newer sitcoms that are currently out on DVD, which all SUCK as far as I'm concerned, and they don't think "Facts" and "Strokes" are all that worthy of the full DVD treatment. However, it is odd that they would put "Family Ties" and "Kate & Allie" out on DVD. Well, if these jerks ain't gonna release anymore seasons of "Facts of Life", the least they could do is stop removing episodes from YouTube, or at least put it back on TV!! I mean..."Frasier" on Lifetime, TELEVISION FOR WOMEN!!!! WHAT GIVES?!?!?!?! >:( :( BTW...did you know that for the past three years, YouTube has had full episodes of "Frasier", "Seinfeld" AND "Friends" and no one took any of that CRAP off?!?!?! Interesting...

Oops, sorry about that! :-[
The extras were OK.....there were interviews with the majority of the original cast (even Steven Peterman), mostly sharing memories of the show. Most of them look pretty good (I didn't realize how skinny Jami Gertz is!). They even shared memories of Merritt Butrick. :\'(
There are also "mini-sodes" of the Facts of Life and Silver Spoons (basically regular episodes cut up and condensed into 5 minutes) but I haven't watched those yet.

Updated the main post to include B.L. Stryker, short-lived detective series starring Burt Reynolds, one I totally forgot about. Season 2 is coming in July
It's an American release, and the one thing I don't get is that Season 1 only ran 5 episodes and Season 2 had 7, so they split it into 2 separate sets? They did that with the US release of 'Kate and Allie', put the 6 episode Season 1 on one set, and charged an arm and a leg for it :-\\

I just picked up Season 5 of Kate and Allie. It came out last week, but for some reason, no store had it, then I see it in HMV today. I was excited to get it, but in a way, I was a little disappointed.
Seasons 1-2, 3 and 4 all came in cardboard boxes with plastic cases inside. Season 5 comes in a standard sized plastic DVD case with the discs overlapping inside. I should have expected it though as all VEI releases now come in plastic cases. Nonetheless, I can hardly wait to watch it. Emma goes off to college and moves into the dorm, Allie contemplates marriage and Kate gets the chance to be personal assistant to Joe Namath

^ Yes, and now that Season 5 is out, all's left is Season 6. Inlike it's previous season releases, Seasons 4 or 5 do not contain bonus episodes from other shows
And on a related note, VEI has announced plans for Season 3 of 'Gimme A Break!' which I am so excited about. The Season 2 release had a bonus episode from Season 3, kind of a teaser to keep us tuned for Season 3.

Not sure if this is mentioned yet, but I wish they'd release beyond season 1 of Growing Pains! ;) I'm normally not that much into '80s sitcoms (not counting the 1988ish ones which continued into the '90s), but this was always one of my favorites (even if I watched it towards the tail end of its run). It just had that innocent, feeling good vibe to it. Mike was your typical preppy but mildly mischevious 80s teen, but he was a cool kid.

Season 1 didn't sell as Warner Bros. expected, so they discontinued further plans for more Season releases, but I think that will change and here's how I know ...
Warner Bros. also released Season 1 of 'Night Court'. When it failed to sell to expectations, they said they wouldn't release anymore Seasons. Well, they caved in and S2 of Night Court will be released in early 2009

Ah, there it is! Just a matter of time. I think I can make space for it on the shelf...
True about Mill creek. They just released the Dungeons & Dragons complete series, last year, after BCI released it only two short years ago. As I understand, BCI went belly-up and Mill Creek took over the rights. Mill Creek cut out the extensive extras and the price for the set plummeted twenty bucks. I purchased the Mill Creek set and I gotta tell you, it's the strangest packaging I seen yet. It's a combination paper sleeve/Amaray multi disc case. It's just...weird...
Muchos gracias for the heads-up, Dog...

Oh man, so it's standard with Mill Creek sets. They did the same thing with 'Booker' The Complete Series. I was expecting the regular snap in holders.
Mill Creek is also releasing Season 1 of 'Hunter', Season 1 of '21 Jump Street' and Season 1 of 'The Greatest American Hero', all of which are already ON DVD. It would be cool if Mill Creek was re-releasing them so they could be on Blu-Ray, but nope, just DVD.
Okay if they are putting this on DVD then they have to start pulling thru with the shows that are actually good and that people would want to spend money on.. ::)
They are also releasing 'Renegade' with Lorenzo Lamas and the short-lived 'Day Break' starring Taye Diggs.

It did go off the air in 1981, so I guess Vega$ counts :D
Remember the 90210 episode where Brandon and Dylan are watching a TV marathon of shows including Vega$ and The Love Boat. All Aaron Spelling shows

Small Wonder - Season 1 came out yesterday. I'm already half way through it and it brings back great memories of when I watched it as a kid.
I forgot how nosy the Brindles are. If I had neighbours like that, I'd be calling the police LOL
Seeing Edie McClurg as Mrs. Brindle really makes me long for 'Valerie' to hit DVD. She'll always be Mrs. Poole

So VEI is releasing the complete series of 'Gimme A Break' on DVD. The problem with this is that they only released the first 2 seasons on their own, which I already own. So I basically have to re-buy S1 and S2, just so I can get S3 through S6
Subject: Re: The 80s TV on DVD Thread

Mill Creek Entertainment ... what the hell?
If you've bought one from them, u know about the cheap paper sleeve packaging and how they've been re releasing seasons of shows already out there.
So they put out a 28 disc set of Hunter, the complete series. All 28 discs in paper sleeves that sit in a jumbo sized plastic case. The discs don't even fit in the slot in the case, the pictures on each disc (exluding season 7) are all the same, and the guest stars listing on the back has Eric Estrada listed. That's right, Eric with a "C".
To top it all off, they had previously released s1 and s2 prior. What they SHOULD have done was start with s4, aka pick up where Anchor Bay left off.
Now I get to take my Anchor Bay s1-s3 sets and sell them. No sense in owning the same thing more than once.
Mill Creek needs to stop taking the cheap route AND start releasing shows that ARE NOT already out there.

I just got the complete series of 'Gimme A Break'. Was a little disapointed that I basically had to re-buy S1 and S2, but the complete 18 disc set was only $45.99 at HMV, which is the average cost of 1 season of a show from today.
I don't know why VEI didn't pick up with S3, but I'm just glad the show is out. S2 came out in 2006, so i've been waiting over 4 years.

It's common box set packaging ... 3 plastic cases inside a cardboard box. Overlapping discs.that snap in holders.
The menus are nice. Episode selection shows a scene from each in a picture frame sitting on a mantle.
1st ep of S3 has Andy Gibb.

Ha ha, yes I'm fully aware of that. I've always wanted the 3rd season for that and of course to get my little nostalgic fix of GAB. Anyway we'll see how it goes, but with international postage etc it ain't cheap.

It was kind of cool. Him and Nell do a duet of 'Up Where We Belong'
It was surprising as that was a known song, so it probably cost BIG bucks to keep that scene in there. As well, Andy Gibb fell off the charts in 1981. In that 1983 episode, he was recording new material, but where was the album that never came?
