Subject: Remake of Little Darlings
Written By: star500 on 05/28/07 at 10:58 am
I was thinking, the movie Little Darlings could really use a remake. It was a very good movie but also very outdated. They could keep the basic plot the same, two girls in a bet to see who could lose their virginity first, but up the amount of money. Instead of it being $100, which I believe it was in the original, they could raise it to $500. My dream cast would be:
Blake Lively--Ferris Whitney
Vanessa Lengies--Angel Bright
Kevin Zegers--Randy
Matthew McConaughey--Gary (the counselor)
Hilary Duff--Dana (the bitchy girl who didn't like Angel)
(Just listing the 5 main characters, I know their were other campers and such at the camp!)
Anyways, I think that would work as a remake. It's been almost 30 years since it came out and it's not a very well-known movie to start with, so a remake might really benefit it.

I remember "Little Darlings." My sister wanted to go see it, but my mother said "NOOOOO!"
My sister went and saw it anyway. We had a second-run cinema nearby that didn't check ID's for R-rated movies. As long as you had two bucks and could reach the ticket counter, you were in like Flynn!
In fact, I don't remember cinemas being uptight about R-rated movies until the late '80s.
Anyway, "Little Darlings" nowadays would fail to shock anybody outside Amish territory.
The competition would have to be who could star in an online porno first!
::)

I agree with you here Max.
Today, I think the hard part would be to find a group of teen girls that are virgins. Currently, the average is around 16. 2 girls having a contest to "loose it" simply would not have the impact today that it did 25 years ago.

Well, maybe it's not taboo for teen girls to have sex anymore but that doesn't mean people still don't want to see it. I think it would make for an interesting movie. They could keep the crucial scenes in like when Angel realizes sex isn't all it's cracked up to be and when the girls decide they'd like to be friends after all at the end. One scene they could leave out would be the scene when they were performing the Sister Song from Pirates of the Penzance. That was sooo annoying, LOL. The food fight scene would be fun to keep in because it lightens the mood and gives the movie a sense of fun.
What I don't want this movie to end up like would be another American Pie, LOL. It could have a few funny scenes of course but it would work better as a mostly dramatic movie. We have enough American Pie-like movies as it is these days and it would be refreshing to see a teen movie that works more as a drama then a comedy.

I never saw the movie, but I've heard about it over the years - it was also on the 1981 episode of I Love the '80s 3:D. It seems like movies are the longest to catch up with the "feel" of the times, since it's filmed and written 2-3 years beforehand, if not more.
From what I know, it seemed to fit in more with Bad News Bears or Animal House style humor than, say a John Hughes movie. Fast Times at Ridgemont High seemed to be kind of a last gasp for the "teen sex" comedies like this, which were probably a 1975-1981/'82 thing.
I think you're right about this kind of movie being marketable as a "drama" back then, since it had more shock value. People's mindset was the same of course, but the perception wasn't.

I dont know that you can make a comparison like that after first admitting you have never seen it.
I certainly wouldnt even put Bad News Bears and Animal House in the same comedic category as each other. For a start one is a kids film and one is a college age film. Very very different styles of humour.
Little Darlings was never a "teen sex comedy" - it was very definitely a drama. It dealt with class comparisons - rich girl vs girl from wrong side of the tracks. It dealt with perceptions - girl from wrong side of tracks deemed to already be experienced. It dealt with first crush as well as first love. Yes there was occasional silliness involved in standard "school camp" films - but it had a lot more depth than that.
To me it was a classic of its time and I was able to identify with both Tatum and Kirsty's characters at different point of the film.
As for remakes - I am against remakes altogether - of any films - time for people to think up their own storylines!
And much as I would LOVE Matt McConaughy as a camp counsellor (sighhhhhh) - Armand Assante was so damn sexy in the original - especially singing "the 12th of never" around the campfire - nothing can beat him. Oh ok - maybe Antonio Banderas if I was making a dream cast!

i'm not sure there as many "doing it" as you think.the minority that do,however, get the most attention. The fact that they are in the minority is the reason they are getting the attention.people that are nice, smart or creative generally don't get noticed as much as people who are always looking for some tail--not at that age anyway. With the increrased awareness of global warming, more and more people are realizing how selfish it is to just have sex without thinking of the impact on the environment,as well as the economy.

I think the true challenge would be in finding girls around the age of 15 who would actually want to go to camp.... I don't know shouldn't the camp cutoff be 13. I mean if you are in high school then aren't you too old to go to camp?

I was just saying it would no longer be risque to make a movie like that.
If your sex has an impact the enviroment....uhhhh, you're gettin' it better than I ever got it!

Well what i meant it's self-centered for girls who don't really want kids yet to want to get them out of the way way while they're still"young and pretty".or wanting to have a "prom baby",or having kids so they don't have to go to college.Whatever the reason, each new person has the potential to multiply like the pods and take over more nad more of the planet.

Or maybe 'MEATBALLS' OR 'MY BODYGUARD'...
Instead of the kid getting a bodyguard to watch over him, by todays standards, he would just carry 'a piece' and blow the bullys head off!
Speaking of both of those movies....WHERE HAS THAT STAR KID -CHRIS MAKEPEACE- BEEN?
(Have our Canadian bloggers seen him lately....the other guy they seem to see a lot of in Canada is Corey Haim).. ???

For a "Little Darlings" remake, you're right that the "losing of the virginity" subject matter would fail to shock most people today. That's why you make it all about the back door. :\'(

Just so you know, Cinder was the bitchy girl, not Dana.
