Subject: Kate & Allie
Written By: whistledog on 04/28/07 at 1:16 am
Kate and Allie starred Jane Curtin and Susan Saint James as best friends from High School who end up divorced single mothers who share an apartment in New York City. The series had 122 episodes and ran for 6 seasons (1984-1989)
I used to watch this show all the time, but I'd forgotten how great it was until I bought the DVD sets. Each show opens with Kate and Allie discussing life, which I always thought was cool! I can't wait to get the rest of the seasons as they get released!

...aaw, crap. It was a fun sitcom, but I haven't been this disappointed since some chick invited me over to watch something called "Hannah and her Sisters" and it turned out to be something about Woody Allen's neuroses. Where was Ellen Degeneres when primetime needed her?

What disappointed you about the show exactly?

I think he was trying to be funny and comment that in your description of the series, you said they were two divorced women who... (and that's where he started his joke by implying that they were lovers...) then when you finished the sentance saying that they shared an apartment, all his hopes for seeing a hot lesbian scene were dashed. At least that's what *I* got out of his post. lol
I loved the series too. It was in syndication for awhile and I started watching it again (I think Nick-at-Nite ran it) and I'd forgotten how much I liked it. Well...up until the season towards the end when Susan St. John got remarried and then it lost some of it's chemistry.

I love Kate & Allie. I'm kinda holding out for season 2 on US dvd release, purely for the (hopefully) better cover art. The Canadian versions always seem a little lacklustre. It was the same with their Gimme A Break ones.
Talking about apartments... didn't they move to a new apartment in the later seasons? I think that's when it jumped the shark.
And lastly, I'm taking Canadian dvds will play on multi-region dvds... stupid question but I need to be doubly sure. :)

From what I've read, Season One apparently did not sell as expected in the US, so Season Two might take a while to get released.
The Canadian versions don't have all the special features that the US ones do. I'm not sure what comes with the US version of Gimme A Break Season 1, but on the Cdn version, you only get Bonus episodes of: Kate and Allie - Season 1, Gimme A Break - Season 2 and The Stockard Channing Show - Season 1
As well on the Season 2 of Gimme A Break (which has yet to see light of day in the States), you get bonus episodes of: Kate and Allie - Season 3 and Gimme A Break - Season 3, which is awesome cause Season 3 of Gimme A Break was when they switched to a different theme song, so you get both themes in one set!
According to the box art, all 4 sets of both Kate and Allie and Gimme A Break are only good for Region 1

I used to watch "Kate & Allie" back in the day and I liked it because I thought it had some comedic humor to it. Had a little crush on Allie when I was kid I think. I know weird but she had some natural and understated beauty which I liked looking back on plus I am a sucker for brunettes!

Thanks for the info Whistle. I'm not surprised the US Season 1 sold badly... only 6 episodes and one bonus one from season 2, yet they charged for a normal 22 episode set. Ridiculous. Considering most fans would've bought season 2 anyway, the bonus episode was null and void.
On an off-note, I met Ari Meyers in 1985 during a McDonald's sponsored meet n greet. My older brother totally had the hots for her. We got her autograph and stuff.

That is ridiculous yes. All that $$ for a 6 episode (Plus 1 bonus) disc in a standard size DVD jewel case. It's a total rip-off, and from what I've read on several sites about the show, alot of US fans were pissed off as well. It's no wonder the set sold poorly.
Also from what I've read, apparently people not from Canada can order through Amazon.ca so since the sets are selling well here, the rest of the seasons will surely follow, so Americans and the like don't have to wait for Universal to release Season 2 at some crazy sky high price; If the 6 episode Season 1 sold for some 30 bucks, then the 22 episode Season 2 should be about $70 ::)
That's awesome you met Ari Meyers. She sure was a hottie!

I picked up Season 4 today for only $24.98. I couldn't believe how cheap it was. If I remember, when S3 came out, it was $31.99

It's better on DVD.. they edit the shows to hell now because commercials are longer than they used to be

It may be cheaper but since it came out so so fast they must be sailing reasonably well.

I've never watched a single episode. I'm not knocking it, it just never appealed to me. There were lots of popular series like that.

I loved this show!!!
God I also remember having a mega crush on Ari Meyers. She was in a horror movie called Shakma in 1990. I only got the movie cause she was in it, only to find that it was actually not too bad of a horror flick. It had Christopher Atkins and Roddy McDowall in it. Oh, and Ari Meyers.
But, yeah, the series was great (Kate and Allie that is)...

I was born in the later part of the 80's in 1987 so don't judge my tv "picks" but my mother started watching kate and allie. I have watched many episodes of it, and I love them. I watch them more now because their own tv. I love kate and allie and their kids. I wish today's tv was just as good. >:(

Okay now this thread's reached 2 pages I've caved in and decided to get the S1 and 2 Canadian release. Just bought it off ebay. Can't wait to relive those episodes and my weekend afternoons in the 80s.
Also with all those episodes, a great exchange rate and a bonus Gimme A Break - you can't argue!

and after finishing S4, something ghas confused me ... on the back of the box art, it lists notable guest stars, and says Heather Langenkamp (from 'A Nightmare on Elm Street') appears, but I don't remember seeing her. So I went to imdb and found out what episode she was in. I re-watched it, and she wasn't there, which means the scenes she was in must've been cut for the DVD release, which would mean the box art is wrong, also because it says that all 25 episodes are unedited
I must google search to see if anyone else who has the S4 set noticed this

My dvds arrived today and they did not disappoint! The first episode just blew me away - hilarious from start to finish. Great one-liners and comedic timing!
And I take back my earlier comment about the Canadian dvd artwork - I love it! I love the slim cases and the episode lists on the back.
It's gonna be a great month catching up on these!
