Subject: Do you consider Donny Osmond's comeback part of late '80s teenpop?
Written By: Marty McFly on 03/31/07 at 9:12 am
In the early-mid 1970s, he was one of the originators of what we now call teenpop. Right now I'm listening to "Sacred Emotion" (one of his comeback hits from 1989), and I think it sort of fits with, say New Kids on the Block's "I'll Be Loving You Forever", albeit a little more refined. I can't review "Soldier of Love" offhand since I haven't heard it in years.
What's amazing about this in general is that, not often to teen-oriented artists (which are also tied to "their time") get to make big comebacks. Even the huge stars of the 2000s that were former late '90s teenpop stars have done it by going solo (Justin Timberlake) as well as drastically changing their sound (Christina Aguilera). But Donny did it by basically using the same overall sound.

Donny does my favorite version of "Breezin'" by George Benson. Donny titled his cover "Breeze on By". It is a smooth jazz track. I like his version better than the orgiinal (even though I love George Benson)...maybe because I like vocal jazz so much. Is this track part of his comeback then?

Justin Timberlake is still teen pop despite that his sound changed... ::)
Didn't he only have one moderate hit in 1989 ...

I don;t consider Justin Timberlake at all anymore.
As for Donny Osmond "Solider of Love""(thats the only 1989 song from him that I can remember hearing) I don;t know if the song itself categorizied as teen-pop.

Well, all I'm inherintly familar with is "Sacred Emotion", so I can't say for sure, lol. But if it's from that era, I'd say so. Even if it doesn't necesarilly fit with the New Kids On the Block/Taylor Dayne/Tiffany/Richard Marx-type music that was popular from 1987 to 1990/'91, it's from the same time.
And yeah, Timberlake's solo career has eclipsed his N'Sync stuff. In the future, people will be talking about "that band Justin Timberlake was in back in the day" as opposed to the other way around. It's almost like he's an entirely different artist now.

No, not really.

Doesn't Donny actually have to make a comeback first?
I mean... he had one song in the 90's two talk shows and this crap on ABC about dreams coming true
Working doesn't define a comeback... it takes success and popularity!
John Travolta made a come back Donny will be forgotten again in, oh I'd say about two weeks.

Actually it does in some cases
Not defending Osmond since his talk shows have been a bust.
What does popularity have to do with anything since there's many young celebs that are famous for the sake of being famous like Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, and all the Disney Channel products...
There's a certain female pop singer/songwriter that's still releasing albums and have a successful career as a stage actress over the past few decades, but hasn't been popular since the later 1980's.

I just think of a comeback as fading from the lime light only to bounce back and regain control. Perhaps popular was te wrong phrase but still some amount of hoopla must be attained for a person to have a comeback.... there has been no hoopla surrounding Donny Osmond - Unless you count the minute and a half Rosie O'Donnell gave him attention on her old show (when he and Marie were doing that first talk show)
And as for the 80s pop star you're refering to (I can only guess Debbie Gibson or Tiffany) its great that she's working! Working is always acceptable but no one is raving over the fact that she's working.
John Travolta Drew Barrymore even Jodie Foster (cuz of college) ... those were comebacks
All those annoying celebs - please god!- will fade. I doubt in 20 years we'll be talking about a Paris or Nicole come back.... I wouldn't mind Lindsay getting her act together though and resurging into fine adult (not porn) actress that she can be. Ah remeber when she was sort of an okay actress?

Sorry if I was unclear before, lol. I previously meant if his 1988/'89 comeback (his glory days were the early '70s as a teen idol) musically tied into the current teenpop wave of the time, such as New Kids On the Block, etc.

no I guess I was unclear... I, sadly, am old enough to remember Donny's glory... I just meant that what he did in the 90's was barely a comeback and being on the horrible dreams show is even less than that. But do ya remember him dressing in the puppy suit and singing to Rosie? That was the first (and only) time I really remember people talking about Donny in years. Until you mentioned him a couple of days ago....
