Subject: 80s songs that define the 80s for you
Written By: whistledog on 01/02/07 at 7:47 pm
I was listening to "Anything For Love" by Gordon Lightfoot, and everytime I hear the piano/keyboard parts by David Foster, it always takes me back to the time when you could turn on the radio and hear great pop songs. What are some songs that take you back to the 80s?
Ones that stand out for me included great solos from a Saxophone, which IMO is the defining instrument in the 80s. When you heard it on a song, you knew it was awesome ...
The One You Love - Glenn Frey
Close My Eyes - Paul Janz
You Belong to the City - Glenn Frey
A Girl in Trouble (is A Temporary Thing) - Romeo Void
The Border - America
Rio - Duran Duran

How big a list you want?
For me, there are 35 songs that personally sum up the 1980s.
If ya want, I'll post 'em.

My question is: you really like "Tokyo Storm Warning" the best out of all of Elvis Costello's '80s output? For me, the one song from the '80s by him is either "I Wanna Be Loved" or "Man Out of Time." Some close runner-ups are "Everyday I Write the Book", "Beyond Belief", "Brilliant Mistake", "Our Little Angel", "Pills and Soap", "Human Hands", "Big Sister's Clothes", "Motel Matches", and "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down."

Jeez, any number of songs...
I'll try to boil it down to four that work for me:
"Magic" ~ Olivia Newton-John
"Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me, Girl" ~ The Spinners
"Manic Monday" ~ The Bangles
"Jump" ~ Van Halen

One particular one I like is "Manic Monday" from the Bangles as I was both born on a monday and in 1986 (which was when it was released).

I can't believe noone has said Aha - Take on me yet !!! :o
It depends from which part of the 80's, I was listening to all sorts of different stuff over the 10 years and could provide a huge list..............
Ultravox - Vienna, and Visage - Fade to Grey spring to mind as I type. I went from listening to new romantic stuff to being an all out rock chick ;D That's not including all the stuff I heard in the charts or on top of the pops as well, my head hurts I think I need to lie down now.

All I wanted was a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me...
Sorta became a catch phrase at my high school. It was funny - became associated with someone who thinks they've been punished unjustly. "I'm grounded for two weeks. That sucks. All I wanted was a Pepsi, but she wouldn't give it to me..."

Guys, aren't we forgetting the awesome instrumental songs of the 80's?
Harold Faltermeyer, "Axel F"
Herbie Hancock, "Rockit"
and of course,
Jan Hammer, "Miami Vice"
Two notes of any of those songs and I wanna jump in my car & go cruisin'! ;D
And there are certainly more with lyrics.
Your Pal,
Doc

P.S.: tetratron, "Cruel Summer" was recorded by Bananarama, not the Bangles. Sorry! :-[
