Subject: Soft Rock Hits of the Late 70s / Early 80s
Written By: whistledog on 11/13/06 at 2:14 am
Inspired by a post Abix made about a Time Life collection, how's about a thread devoted to all those great Soft Rock hits of the 70s and early 80s. What are some of your favourites?
Probably my all-time favourite (and hardest ever to find) is the group Nielsen/Pearson (Reed Nielsen and Mark Pearson). They had two hits in 1980-81: "If You Should Sail" (US #38) and a cover of "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" (US #56). I found a YouTube Video of them singing "If You Should Sail" on Solid Gold. Totally awesome!
I will post more later. I should compile some clips of good ones that have been long forgotten. There's alot of great ones out there that should not be forgotten 8)

Yeah, there was alot of good soft rock from the period when The Seventies was turning into The Eighties - like 1978 to early 1983. Most of it was country-influenced, singer-songwriter or AOR ballads.
"Against the Wind" by Bob Seger
* "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones
"Never Be the Same" by Christopher Cross
"Endless Love" by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross
"Only the Lonely" by The Motels
"Open Arms" by Journey
"Lonesome Loser" by Little River Band
"Cool Night" by Paul Davis
"Kiss On My List" by Hall and Oates
"We Don't Talk Anymore" by Cliff Richard
"The One You Love" by Glenn Frey
"Don't Talk to Strangers" by Rick Springfield
"Waiting for a Girl Like You" by Foreigner
"Look What You've Done to Me" by Boz Scaggs
* I was surprised "Into the Night" came out in 1980. I think it's on more common ground with the polished soft rock of the late '80s like Steve Winwood.
Those songs are pretty much all cheese, but I like 'em. ;D

Maybe that's what the world needs today -- Soft Rock!
It was a kinder and gentler place in this world when SR was on the radio.

pink floyd and yes don't necessarily count as soft rock but not because they're not soft. i agree, it was a better world when there was a wider array of musical moods to choose from in terms of popular music.
well, it was sorta a better world.

Surprisingly, "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones was one of those weird songs that caught on twice in popularity. First time in 1980, then had a second revival in the charts in 1989. I liked it both times. I had the song on a 33 1/3 rpm record album I got as a child in 1981 or so. Another song I can think of off the top of my head that had success twice in the charts (with some time between re-releases) was "Send me an angel" by Real Life.
