Subject: Movies you HATED and you feel you are the ONLY one who hated them

Written By: namilliron on 09/11/06 at 10:45 am

For me it would be as such:

Footloose

The Goonies

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Actually lost friends over my white-hot hatred of those films.

Comments, anyone?

I can't think of any 80's movies I hated right now.....

But 2002's One Hour Photo with Robin Williams tops my list!

Agreed.

Annoying alien and faggy kids. Bad combination.

Uh, I think Elliott was a little young to determine such a thing.  You're sounding a little like Fred Phelps/Jerry Falwell here, "E.T. was a f@g!"

I agree, the movie was sooooo frickin' sappy.  Spielberg should have hired David Lynch as a consultant.  Could have used a little Eraserhead injected into that flick!  The excessive merchandizing was worse.  By the fall of '83, we were saying, "E.T. go home!"

DUMB:
"Porky's," all of them including the first one.

CHEESY:
"Dirty Dancing," and I don't like Jennifer Gray.

RUBBISH:
The Indiana Jones sequels.  "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was and will always be awesome.  The others, nuthanks.

PRETENTIOUS:
"Reds."  All Hollywood, no grit.  Boring.  If you thought it was boring, "Reds" fans implied you were not sophisticated enough.  Sorry, there was no reason a story about John Reed, the only American in buried in the Kremlin had to be boring, but it was.  Boring does not equal sophisticated.  The only part worth seeing is Henry Miller's cameo!*

BORING:
"All The President's Men," as above, except there was no Henry Miller cameo.  When my father took us to see it, I thought I was to young to understand it, so that's why it was so boring.  I was, but that's not why.  I watched APM twenty years later, and it was boring from the first frame to the last!

PATHETIC:
"On Golden Pond," Hepburn, Fonda, and Fonda--"Wanna dance or would you rather just suck face?"  'Nuff said!

BRATTY:
"St. Elmo's Fire," should be fairly obvious why.  If not, you probably bought all episodes of "Friends" on DVD.

SNOOZER:
"Plenty," Meryl Streep, Sting, Tracy Ullman, John Gielgud...but plenty narcotic.

SNOTTY:
"Room With a View," stop the Pretentious-Go-Round, I'm gonna puke!

CHEESIER:
"The Lost Boys," suburban vampire kids featuring Kiefer Southerland, a retarded Anne Rice.

GROSS INSULT TO CELLULOID:
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show," don't get me started!
http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/12/happy1.gif

*ASTERISK
"Henry & June," I thought "Oh great, they're making a movie about Henry Miller"...but it wasn't.  It was just another super-softcore attempt on the diaries of Anais Nin, with 18-year-old sexpot Uma Thurmond as "June," and Maria De Meideros as Nin, who coos sultry inanities, like 'ugo is with us but, I vant to vuck 'enry!
Git outta here!  Henry Miller got a lotta nookie, but he wasn't just some Hugh Hefner dude!

Hardcore, nasty and over-the-top.  Agreed.  Almost a action/horror movie in the spirit of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series.  Was terrifying one minute, gross-out the next minute, humorous the next and back to terrifying...

I'll spare everyone my arguments in defense of IJ&TOD and not wax polemical.  I mean, someone actually succeeds at convincing me of the relevance of the Star Wars  prequels I'll eat my hat...

Funny to watch George and Steven, on the DVD interview, maneuvering to distance themselves from IJ&TOD.  Seems George was in a foul mood because of his divorce (understandable) and the dark, brooding nature of the story and sets of IJ&TOD was the product of his heavy heart and troubled soul.  Mmmkay...

What good thing and what evil hath been wrought in thy halls, George groove ;) on all...

  Edited to add:
  last crusade blew though.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is George's & Steven's apology for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom...

No disrespect taken. You are entitled to your opinions as I am entitled to my own. I don't ever recall seeing Urban Cowboy so I have no opinion one way or the other. I don't know if I saw Goodfellas or not but I don't care for mob movies-or movies with a lot of violence. As for Big, I know everyone raved about it but it just didn't do anything for me. I don't know why.

I didn't see it in the '80s itself (about 10 years ago I did for the first time), but I've gotta agree with you about Big. Sure, it had a few humorous parts here and there, but I didn't find it that funny or entertaining - it was too slow overall. Hell, it was even kinda sad in places!

To me it's overrated, although the overall storyline is a bit relatable to us all. For instance, in the beginning, when he's himself, I thought Josh was a believable 12-year old. However, it's like, once he got his adult body, I always thought he started acting like he was 5 or something. It just wasn't that believable to me (well, neither is the premise ;) - but you get my point).

Top 10 Movies Hawk Hates (And Gets Chastised For It)

10. Fatso, starring Dom Deluise. He was great, but the directors handled the subject matter all WRONG!
9. Steel Magnolias. I can hang with some chick flicks, but this one just played it up too much!
8. Smokey & The Bandit 3. What a joke!
7. Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Is it me, or was Tony Randall miscast in the voice of "Spike"?
6. Iron Eagles. Louis Gossett Jr. was the only class in that act!
5. Platoon. Oh, noooooo......NOT another war movie!!!!!
4. Superman IV. "The Dude Of Steel"? C'mon.....Geraldo could've done better!
3. Moonwalker. Purely a Michael Jackson vehicle...wish I was that rich! Then I could be spoiled too!
2. Mac & Me. Another shameless plug for a restaurant...any guesses which? *cough-McDonald's*
AND! Hawk's All-Time Worst Film Of the 1980s:
1. My Tutor...also known as: "Soft Core Porn With Hardly Any Point!"

Bizarre, how we're totally flip-flopped on this, since I loved HTD (and not even just because of Lea Thompson). ;) Sure, it was cheesy and unrealistic, but it has the fantasy appeal of a video game while still interesting enough to want to root for the good guys (i.e. Lea, and the duck).

BTW for the record, I only saw Big in its entirety once, back around 1996 when I was 14-15. At the time, I just remember going to myself, There's no way I'd have acted like that only two years ago, then again, I guess it's not everyday you become 20 years older and have to fend for yourself! So that could explain Josh's regression to being more of a little kid than a borderline teen.

Now that I'm older, maybe I should give it another shot.

I must disagree with two of Maxwell's choices:

Last Temptation Of Christ (this was a "What If?" movie- NOT defamation of character!)
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover- This was a WICKED film!

Most of the others I will agree with.

Here are 3 more to go on the "Burn With Barney" list:

-The Pick-Up Artist
-Batman & Robin (Two Words- GEORGE CLOONEY)
-Basquiat (Fair biography- it reminds me too much of my brother, who is an artist in Portland, and also a druggie)

The one movie I really remember hating that everybody else seemed to think was great was Dirty Dancing. The whole time I was watching it, the only thing I could think of was "Why do I care about what happens to *any* of these people?"

I also didn't particularly enjoy many of Tom Cruise's movies. There is something about him that I do not like, and for the life of me I cannot figure out what it is. The only one of his movies that I ever really enjoyed was "The Last Samurai". I have never figured out what it is about him that rubs me the wrong way.

I actually REALLY HATED Grease but that was filmed in the 1970's.

I suppose it wasnt the film so much, just the music to it.

It really sheesh me to tears.

Then they released the grease megamix in the 90's.............yippee :\'(

Yeah, I've been sucked into that date night vortex too... :-Dirty Dancing  is pretty much the ultimate chick flick and quite possibly the standard that all chick flicks are measured against, but I accept this.  You're correct, the characters are impossible to identify with and to care about.  Just a bad movie, IMO...

Yup, it's gotta be Swayze go ;)...

I loved "Grease" the first time I saw it, but I was ten!
Subsequently, I find the whole number to be dumb as all sh*t.  They didn't even TRY to make the characters look or act like kids in the '50s really were!  I mean, it didn't even the credibility of '50s themed fantasy.  Sort of like what the movie "Reds" was to the WWI era socialist movement in the U.S.

There is such a thing as "short man's disease" brought about by the rampant height discrimination in our society.  I know, I deal with it.  Even when a man under 5'8" becomes a heart throb movie star, he's still vulnerable.  Ultimately we short men have to figure out how to ignore the stupid height discrimination.  It's not going away any sooner than discrimination against fat women.  Whether or not he is responding to height prejudice, when a short man exhibits ambitious or leadership qualities, his detractors say he has a "Napoleonic complex."  They said the same thing about me, along with, "that mean little f*cker's got a major case of short man's disease!"

They even said Howard Dean had a Napoleonic complex because he is an assertive leader.  Why stop there?  Apply it to everything.  If I go on a camping trip, call it a "Napoleonic camping trip."

Anyway, Michael J. Fox was even shorter than Tom Cruise, and he was never such an a-hole.  In his younger years he was a real Alex P. Keaton Republican who couldn't wait to visit the Reagan White House.  He turned out to be a nice guy, though.  So sad about the Parkinson's.

Honestly, I do not know exactly *why* I never liked Tom Cruise, but I don't think its his height. I mean, I've never actually met the guy or anything, and I can find no rational reason to dislike him. He's certainly never done anything to me. Heck, I even missed his annoying "couch jumping" incident. There is just something about him that creeps me out, and it did before I knew anything about him.

We have a history of short people in my family...I'm 5'2", my dad is 5'3", and both my grandfathers were 5'7".

It's a couple of factors with me.  I'm anywhere from 5' 4 1/2 to 5' 5," depending on who's measuring.  I just quote it as 5' 5," however, if you see me with shoes on, it's deceptive because a wear a prescription orthotic.  Also I have a very straight posture and well-proportioned dimensions, which also give the illusion of greater height. Nonetheless, I call myself "short," not "vertically challenged," or something.  However, I cannot be sure my own height comes from genes or is heritable were I to have children.  There is ativism for shortness in my family.  My father's maternal grandfather was 5' 4" and one of his sons was 5' even.  Some have attributed this to terrible rheumatic fever he suffered in childhood, but we can't be sure.  My maternal uncle is 5'6" and my maternal grandfather was a gargantuan 5' 9."  My paternal grandfather was, I think, about 6' even, though he was probably 5' 10" when he died at the age of 37.  The self-inflected shotgun blast blew off the top of his skull!
http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/10/teufel.gif
My mom is an average 5' 5," and my father is 6' even.  6' used to be "tall" fifty years ago, but now it's nothing remarkable!  My dad always implied I didn't "measure up," but that's becaue he's about the nastiest SOB you'd ever (not) want to meet. I don't know if my full height would have been taller if I had more hale beginnings.  I was beset by health problems one after the other as a child, then at the pubescent growth spurt time, I suffered from severe neglect due to familial chaos.  This resulted in both high stress levels and poor nutrition in late childhood/adolescence. There were also so problems in utero.  Any of these can led to great hindrance in growth...but not necessarily.  I am convinced the latter eniologies were involved because my hands, knees, and feet are quite narrow for a man.

Whatever the reason, I can't change it, and I've come to the radical notion...why should I even want to change it.  It's an integral part of who I am.

I have met some women who are nazis about hight.  They go nearly to the point of saying "short men should be euthenized."  But I don't think most people would care about Tom's height.  they don't like him because he's an a-hole.  That's why I brought up a nice celebrity--who happens to be short--Michael J. Fox.

There was the other Poison Ivy, a "Meatballs" rip-off TV movie circa 1984 w/ Robert Klein.  Spaceballs was nowhere near as p*ss-poor as "Robin Hood: Men in Tights."

The funny thing is "Friday the 13th" was a bona-fide horror movie before there were any sequels.  It wasn't supposed to be just a joke, it was supposed to be scary.  The problem was kids-get-butchered-in-the-woods formula was hackneyed even in 1980, but it did have its moments.  Then there was the 1981 sequel.  You want to drag Jason back out to hack up some more campers.  Cool.  Now let it go.  The didn't.  Where it became a total joke was:
1984: Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
1985: Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
Guys, you can't do that...but they did anyway!  Then the the public began to know the series as "Jason" movies!

The Goonies]

For me it would be as such:

Footloose

The Goonies

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Actually lost friends over my white-hot hatred of those films.

Such attitude!!!!  You MUST be kidding---right??

How could you POSSIBLY consider those movies a total, complete 'bore-fest' and hatefully annoying????  You're kidding.

CLASSIC---"Anyone....Beuller....anyone....Beuller....Beuller"

The Goonies, Footloose, The Lost Boys, The Breakfast Club-----THEY ALL ROCKED.   Footloose was one the BIGGEST box office smash of the time, and the Soundtrack was just BLOWN AWAY

Apparently, for many of you, your sense of humor either went stagnate, or you are simply just a 'downer'.  I am PROUD of my own PERSONAL copies of EACH of those 80's Teen films.  The Breakfast Club----um, excuse me, was recently voted during the 25th anniversary High School movies DVD re-release as the BEST HIGH SCHOOL TEEN FILM  of ALL - TIME.

What is UP with you folks??  I'm AMAZED none of you went too far as to list hatred of TOP GUN. I would have loved to personally give you a good ass-smack for that.

I loved FBDO.  Still do.  It is a very '80s movie, but it has aged rather well.  Not "Footloose."  That one looks as dated as "Meatballs."  The soundtracks is extremely lame, and Kenny Loggins is insufferable!

"Goonies" I never saw.  I was a bit old for it by the time it came out.  Here's what I do remember--Cyndi Lauper:

I too refused to see it because of several reasons, not the least of which was the predictable ending.

The only reason this film grossed like 2 billion is that 15 year old girls watched it 20 times each to see Retardo DiCrappio (I like some of his other acting though).

I despise Larry: Health Inspector as well, though I suspect I'm not the only one who does. A waste of 9$ and 90 minutes. How can a movie be far off one's stand-up routine humor-wise?

The Blair Witch Project was terrible too, though I know I'm not the only one who thought that sucked.

All of the Child's Play movies were terrible, though not nearly as bad as, say, Brazil.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Karate Kid or the sequels, but, ugh.....

Oh yeah, almost forgot: The one Jenna Jameson produced movie (starring herself) that I saw sucked, and not in the way you'd hope a movie of that type might suck.

Dude, if you like Larry the Cable Guy's stand up, you might just be a redneck... How could anyone find that f**king moron humourous? I didn't see the movie, but let me guess... 90 minutes of a big, fat, talentless idiot making the most basic and obnoxious one-liners imaginable. The BWP crew went most of the way to making a terrifying movie.  They understood how to create nervous suspense.  They understood the Hitchcock principle, "the scariest monster is the monster you never see."  I also thought use of light and shadow.  The cam-corder style was cool.

The problem is the script was terrible, and I couldn't stand the kids.  I was rooting for the witch!

I thought both Titanic and Blair Witch Project were somewhat decent movies that got ridiculously over-hyped. Whenever something seems overrated, there's always the chance of a huge backlash against it...

I don't mean that everyone who hates these films is simply reacting to the hype. It's just that in addition to people who hate Blair Witch Project on its own terms, for example, you've also got people who viscerally hate the whole "Oh my god did you see this movie it's like soooooo scary and based on a true story too!" type of hype surrounding a film like that. ;)

A lot of people got so into BWP there were whole "fan fiction" sites.  There was background written by the screenwriters themselves which accompanied the official website.  Then the fans tried to amplify on the background.  It got pretty p*ss-poor pitiful!

"Waiting To Exhale"...

Not an '80s film, but it had Whitney "Watch Me Go Into Porn" Houston, who was made into an '80s pop icon (unfortunately).

I like various films, of all sorts, but anything with her in it is rendered puerile and intolerable.

If they had used someone else, like Cicely Tyson, for example, I might have enjoyed it.

Another non 80's movie (sorry) but I detested "Gangs of New York."  It was so long!  I thought it would never end, and I was bored senseless.  I would have walked out of the theatre, but was on a date and thought that he was enjoying it.  Turns out, he hated it as much as I did.  It became a running joke between us, so I guess something good came out of it.  But it is seriously the worst movie I have ever seen!

I saw what undoubtedly qualifies as the most overhyped piece of cinematic garbage, last night:

"Legends Of the Fall".

Don't get me wrong- I am a BIG Anthony Hopkins fan, and have been since I saw "Magic", when it first came out. I also like Aidan Quinn, and to a small degree, Brad Pitt.

But this film was quite sub-standard as far as plots and believable characters go.
The settings were great, and Hopkins's portrayal of a stroke victim was uncanny!

That being said, I got so disgusted that I actually watched a baseball game yto cleanse my palate. (Baseball, BTW, is a sport I have NEVER liked.)

I don't really remember the plot, but I remember being very disappointed in it and very bored!

War of the Roses. It an outstanding cast (Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito) but it really sucked. Talk about a waste of great talent.

Newest one to hit this list:

"The Spaghetti Incident", with Rosanna Aquette and David Bowie.

Fair cast, bad plot, even worse catch phrase on the cover:
"She wants tied up. He wants tied down. It's not what you think."

Hawk's Rating On The Barf-O-Rama Scale: 8 (Major Hork-ola!)

DUMB:
"Porky's," all of them including the first one.

My friend and I snuck in to see that because we were under 17 and they did check ID's.  I was SO disappointed.  What a waste of time.

I also have never been a big fan of Animal House or Caddy Shack.  They just don't "crack-me-up" like other people say they do.  Some parts are funny/cute, but I just don't really l like them.

I am also not a very big Monty Python fan.  British humor and I have a large ocean to cross before we see eye to eye.

I agree with that one - it was not that good of a movie.  Talented actors, but not a well-written script.

The only movie I remember walking out on was. . . .  I can't even think of the title . . . . .  it was. . . . . .  maybe. . . .  Broadcast News.  Was that a movie?  I remember it took place in a TV station and the movie itself was long so they had an intermission and we left, not to return.

not an 80s movie, but ... Goodfellas, Casino and all three Godfather films

Violent Mob movies are not really my cup of tea.

I totally AGREE 'WhisteDog'. I can't stand Martin Scorcese's love of overbearing brutal violence.  I prefer the elegance of Hitchcock.  As for a movie from the '80s that was popular, that I didn't really like: 'The Big Chill'.

"In the Presence Of Men".

Bad cast, poor plotline, trumped-up follow-through.

Someone call Leonard Maltin!

I really hated The Shining. What a boring film.

Other films not from the 80s that most people like but I detest are:
Clockwork Orange
2001
Titanic
West Side Story
Gone with the Wind
Citizen Kane
and
Star Wars Attack of the Clones (or whatever episode II is called)

I really hated The Shining. What a boring film  -- Boring? It was more spiteful than just boring. It was garbage when it came out and it's still garbage today.
Clockwork Orange -- More garbage.
2001 -- Not one of my favorites but at least it's a serious look at space exploration and travel. And there's so little of that.
Titanic -- I saw it again on television last week. They say most movies today are geared toward 13-year-old girls and boys. Guess which group that one aims for. I do like its attempt at trying to visually recreate the last hours of the people on that ship but I still prefer 1958's "A Night To Remember".

West Side Story, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane -- You're crazy. Those three are great.

Star Wars Attack of the Clones (or whatever episode II is called) -- Sometimes a mediocre Star Wars movie is better than something like "The Shining".

"Forrest Gump."

"Forrest Gump" was cute and all, but the author, Winston Groom, was not satisified enough withe Zemeckis/Roth interpretation to let them go forward with the sequel.  It was marketed as a "family movie," so the conservatives objected to the profanity, sex, and AIDS references.  The liberals, on the other hand, objected to the right-wing political message in the movie.
I enjoyed it the same way as I enjoyed Steve Martin's "The Jerk."

I loved "Animal House" even though the screenplay was weak.  Jonh Landis managed to pull together a great little movie on a meager budget and not much of a script.  They couldn't make "Animal House" today (I mean, they could, but it wouldn't work) unless it was made completely outside of "Hollywood" (ala "Napoleon Dynamite"). Today they'd cast Jack Black as "Bluto," and it would just get worse from there!
::)
"Caddy Shack" had some great material in it, but I hate it because I hate golf and all things golf-related.

If you don't like British humor, then I guess Python's out.  A lot of Python sketches were written nearly forty years ago.  Some of the humor based on rigid social class and etiquette may be hard even for young Britons to "get" nowadays.

West Side Story- I have never been able to get past the "I just met a girl named Maria" scene.

Gone w. Wind- as far as films set during the Civil War I just prefer Glory... now that was a film I could relate too... besides doesn't Rhett practically rape Scarlett in the film  Hmmm nothing romantic about that!

Citizen Kane- you know I had to watch it in a film class twice in one evening ...basically I was like Rosebud is a sled! get on with the action.. alas it never came.  It just moved too slow for me.

I prefer films that move... or at least characters I care about... (was there anything remotely likable about Kane?)  I get bored easily and start thinking about my shopping list. and wonder if I'll have time to get the laundry done. I love films  like To Kill a Mocking Bird, Miracle Worker, TheChildren's Hour, the Elephant Man, Grand Illusion, M, Imitation of Life, Color Purple,  Jaws, You know good films

I agree tho. I would take Nat. Portman's horrible getting shot at in the desert acting to any scene from the shining too.

I mean seriously, Ive seen 6 year olds fake roll after getting "shot" much better than the one Portman tried to pull off... this scene tho, single handedly is the reason I hate the film.
