I remember going to the cinema to see Tron. I must've been 5 yrs old but clearly remember sat there not having a clue what was happening. We did love all the zooming bikes etc. Funny thing is I've never watched it since. I really must do for such a legendary film.

I remember how cool and cheesy it seemed at the same time. It also seemed pretty scary, I was afraid I would get trapped in a video game. But I don't think I ever sat all the way through this movie. I didn't see it in the theater, but somehow as a kid you knew it was in the league of other fantasy/sci-fi flicks like Star Wars, but it was revolutionary nonetheless.

Anyone who has to ask why TRON is cool obviously never saw it. But no one can deny it was a landmark in the history of filmmaking, especially for special f/x. CGI animation made its first big impact on the movies with TRON, paving the way for plenty of classic f/x films from the 80's to today. Follow this address to the TRON salute on an 80's movie site, and if you read the trivia bit starting with "One of the Walt Disney Studios...", you'll get a prime example of what I'm talking about!

Tron is a cool movie, and I would have to say that both Tron and The Lawnmower Man (one of the most earliest movies other than Tron, about virtual reality) are both overlooked movies.
By the way.... Lawnmower Man 2 sucks. ::) ;D

TRON: According to Hamilton's Film Encyclopedia, this 1981 film saw the career cementing of 2 film icons, and 3 major character actors:
Icons- Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn) and David Warner (Ed Dillenger/SarkIII)
Actors- Cindy Morgan (see "Caddyshack"), Barnard Hughes (see "Mr. Merlin"), and Bruce Boxleitner (see "Babylon 5", and "Scarecrow & Mrs. King").
This film was also renowned for its then-cutting-edge SFX.
Not only did it spawn a line of toys, but also 2 highly successful video games (TRON and DISCS OF TRON), and was even featured as part of a ride @ Disneyland ("The People Mover").
That all being said, a short answer is: I liked it.
