Hey.  I was just curious as to if anyone else besides myself remembers this rather creepier version of AIW???  It was this 2-part film that aired, I believe, on CBS.  Don't remember who the girl that played Alice was, but a whole bunch of big names were in the cast.  Sherman Helmsley, Red Buttons (God rest his soul), Scott Baio......too many stars to name.  Anyway, I used to watch this thing every single day when I was 6-years-old since taping it back in late-1985.  Sadly, my stupid VCR ate the tape a year ago, which I am still pretty sad about.  This was a staple of my childhood.  Anyhoo, my fave adaptation of "Alice" to date.  All the others kind of suck in my opinion.

In any event, did anyone else see this movie back then???  The "Alice" has the typical blonde hair but, rather than a blue dress and white apron, she's wearing a red/orange dress with the white apron.  I remember a few people alledging that this version was too scary for kids, which is why they never show it anymore.  If I remember correctly, this TV mini-series came out around the same time that "Return to Oz" did in theaters.  Oddly, "Return to Oz" had the same type of feel to it.

yes, I believe I do remember seeing this as a child.

I do remember it.  I also taped it at the time, and my stepdaughter would watch it all the time.  She absolutely loved it.

And yes, it was full of stars.  Mostly I remember Sammy Davis Jr. as the Catterpiller.  Having gown up with the DIsney version, I was used to him slowly going "Whoooo, areeeeee, youuuuuuuuu????".  When Sammy gives the line, he just quickly belts out "Who are you?".  I about died laughing first time I saw it.

And the cast was a real who's who in entertainment of the time.  Red Buttons, Steve Allen, Lloyd and Beau Bridges, Carol Channing, George Gobel (us old timers remember him as a permanent fixture on "Hollywood Squares"), Ann Jillian, Pat Morita, and of course Ringo Starr as the Mock Turtle!

The last time I saw it would have been around 1992.  When my ex and I split up, I let her have the tape.  Odds are, it was discarded a long time ago.

However, in doing a little checking, it seems that it is comming out on DVD on August 1st.  I guess I am going to have to get it in a couple of weeks, just for Sammy and Ringo if for no other reason.  8)

I am just so totally bummed out because my old tape got chewed up!  I'd go look for a VHS copy, or the DVD (which I doubt they have), but it just would not be the same.  All the old '80s commercials I taped along with the film have/had real sentimental value.  I just wish I still had my old tape!  :-\\ :\'(  The Disney version was somewhat enjoyable, but the rest kinda stank real bad!  Sorry to offend, but the worst ones were the ones that had an adult, or teenage actress playing Alice.  I believe Alice should be a little girl, or at least a pre-teen.  I never saw the one from 1999 with Tina Whatsherface, but from what I have seen in promos, she seemed to do a pretty decent Alice.

If it's the one with the jabberwocky then yes, it was shown on the Disney channel in the early 90's I believe.

Yep!  The Jabbowakki was indead in this version.  Scared me as a little kid.  I think the "happy" versions of "Alice" were bupkiss, because "Alice" is kind of a dark story.  This one, even with all the musical eliments, was pretty dark at times, like when Alice was crying because she wanted her family to see her when she ran home.  Raw emotion, rather than boo-hooing like a wuss then singing some cheesy song.  When "Return to Oz" came out on video, I used to watch both movies back to back.  I guess I was a Dorothy and Alice obsessed little girl back in the day.

It's a pity so many of the actors are either dead, crazy, or in reality shows.
I understand Natalie Gregory (Alice) has grown up quite well.

How odd! I was just reading about this version a few days ago on Amazon.com... You see, I'm currently reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass for the first time, and I'm absolutely loving them. They're very much to my tastes.  :D

Since this film version apparently covers both books, gets a lot of great reviews from people, and is described on Amazon as being the most faithful to Carroll's original story.... Well, I think I'm just going to have to buy it on DVD now. It just came out today. :)

Another thing I just realized... As I was talking about Alice in Wonderland earlier today, my niece told me that her mother (my brother's ex-girlfriend) has been looking for a live-action film version that made an impression on her as a child... She mentioned that the Jabberwocky in particular had frightened her mom. Well, I just realized that this must be the version my niece was referring to.... and it's just been released on DVD today. How strange when things come together like this. :)

After I watch it, maybe I'll consider buying her a copy for her 12th birthday.

You know, I have an uncle that has an "Alice In Wonderland" chess set.

The colors are silver & gold, respectively.
The thing is quite old, I am led to understand, and I would dearly love to get hold of it, but since he has 2 kids, he will probably leave it to one of them.

Yeah, I remember this. It was CBS and I was about 8. I fell asleep during one of the nights of it. It started with that cool, CBS SPECIAL PRESENTATION bumper that I usually associate with holiday cartoon specials.

Natalie Gregory is actually brunette - they had to stick a blonde wig on her (even though Alice in the book is brunette!)
