Subject: Starship "Sara" (1986)
Written By: woops on 07/20/06 at 2:44 pm
Though I disliked "We Built This City", long before the infamous 'worst songs' list, I stumbled upon one of the sappiest ballads of the 1980's, which also from Starship titled "Sara". :P

I think they really meant: "Sorry, Sorry, I have to sing you this dumb song" ::)

I grew up listening to Starship, and regardless of what any list says, I think all of their songs are great. "Sara" is an excellent song. In the music video, Rebecca DeMornay is in the role of Sara.
My favourite Starship track is "Before I Go" as I seem to remember that one best of all 8)

woops, you're breaking my heart, man...
I'm with you on "We Built This City", but "Sara"..?
I've enjoyed all three incarnations of this group...

I like "Sara" too. It's perfectly fine compared to some other songs. Maybe the only reason I may like "We Built This City" is because they make many references to the Bay Area. That's about it.

"...I stumbled upon one of the sappiest ballads..."
How do you stumble on a common song from the '80s like "Sarah" ?
It is kind of sappy but I always liked it. Now the video was pretty stupid, and you know you have a bad video when Weird Al Yankovic comments on how lame it is. ::)
But wasn't Jefferson Airplane a really odd group?
They had great songs in the '60's then they all turned 30 years old in the '70s and they changed their music style and became a total different group. They created their own kind of easy listening music in the '70s. Then they turn around and become something different in the '80s.

I thought the tornado video was creative. Alot of '80s "conceptual" videos get ripped on for being cheesy, but that's partially because starting around 1988 "performance" videos tended to become more the thing (followed by darker/simpler '90s videos in contrast to the breezy/bright 1983-87 ones).
Anyway, now that I think about it, both the video and the song for "Sara" are superior to "We Built this City" (which I also love). It's sorta ballad-like but not a ballad per se, if you know what I mean. I love those kinds of songs.

I prefer Jefferson Starship to Starship, and that's only for the song "Jane".

I think my favorite JS song is "Layin' it On the Line", are you into that one? It's IMO not too different from their Starship period, just a little more hard rock-y.

I just love the Surrealistic Pillow album; if anyone can recommend another album of theirs that is in that vein I'd be happy.

Musically, the songs were okay but I hated their faces in the videos! The videos alone made you hate the song. The lead singer and that woman are my prime examples.

That woman was Grace Slick. I always thought she was scary looking. She creeps me out everytime I see the video for 'We Built This City'

Yes creepy and scary were the words I was looking for.

I think they changed due to different members departing. Grace Slick, Paul Kanter stuck with the band as did Marty Balin (although on and off), and I think it was Marty's influence that led the group into a more soft rock style.

I dig their harder edge stuff, like Stranger, Jane, and Find Your Way Back. Their later 80s stuff was just way too hokey for me.

I loved the song "Sara"! If I remember correctly, I think the video was set way out in the country somewhere and there was a little farmhouse involved. Anyway, my little sister was born in late 1985, and I remember holding her and rocking her and watching this video and singing this song to her - her name is Sarah. Fond memories...

I still like 'Sara'. The album 'Knee Deep in the Hoopla' is still IMO their best ...
'We Built This City', 'Sara' and 'Before I Go' were all songs I loved as a kid. They bring back great memories and I will always love them, no matter what some crappy Maxim list says lol :)

I love these type of songs the most. I'm not sure exactly how to describe them, but it's relaxing and catchy at the same time. I'd actually call it "mildly upbeat". Like it's generally softer and has the emotion and feeling of a love song, but there's also something of a beat to it...so it's not a TOTAL ballad.
Well, I don't have any certain memories tied into it, but it was one of the songs on a series of mixtapes that my dad made for us circa 1987, with announcements between the songs and all (I've told some people on here about that, lol)...so it's total sentimental value just for that reason. I remember listening to the tape it was on lots of times back in early Elementary school, so it's always been one of my particular favorites too.

Never seen the video, though like anybody named Delilah now, I bet most women named Sara had their boyfriends/hubands putting the song into mixtapes ::) :P 8-P

I'm trying not to take the harsh comments personally because my name happens to be Sara (spelled with an h). Having said that, I don't think this song is that bad of a song. There were alot of power ballads in the '80s that were alot worse.

I like the name Sara (or Sarah)...
I'm pretty sure the subject of the Starship song is a real Sara, and not a fictional person. Mickey Thomas' wife at the time, since divorced...

I used to love the song Sara as a kid. Maybe because I once was in love with a Sarah, but never had the courage to tell her. =(
