"You leave in the morning
With everything you own
In a little black case
Alone on a platform
The wind and the rain
On your sad and lonely face
Mother will never understand
Why you had to leave
For the love that you need
Will never be found at home
The answer you seek
Will never be found at home
Run away turn away run away turn away run away (repeat)
Pushed around and kicked around
Always a lonely boy
You were the one
That they'd talk about around town
As they put you down
And as hard as they would try
They'd hurt to make you cry
But you'd never cry to them
Just to your soul
No you'd never cry to them
Just to your soul "
Is there any sadder lyrics than that? :\'(

Yes.
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'cause if there's one thing that she don't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way
Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto
And his hunger burns
so he starts to roam the streets at night
and he learns how to steal
and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto
Then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto
As her young man dies,
on a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
Or.......
Today I stumbled from my bed
With thunder crashing in my head
My pillow still wet
From last night tears
And as I think of giving up
A voice inside my coffee-cup
Kept crying but
And ringing in my ears
Don't cry daddy
Daddy, please don't cry
Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy
Together we'll find a brand new mommy
Daddy, daddy, please laugh again
Daddy ride us on your back again
Oh, daddy, please don't cry
Why are children always first
To feel the pain and hurt the worst
It's true, but somehow
It just don't seem right
'Cause ev'ry time I cry I know
It hurts my little children so
I wonder will it be the same tonight
Don't cry daddy
Daddy, please don't cry
Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy
Together we'll find a brand new mommy
Daddy, daddy, please laugh again
Daddy ride us on your back again
Oh, daddy, please don't cry
Oh, daddy, please don't cry

***
Exit Music (For A Film)
Wake from your sleep,
the drying of your tears,
Today we escape, we escape.
Pack and get dressed
before your father hears us,
before all hell breaks loose.
Breathe, keep breathing,
don't lose your nerve.
Breathe, keep breathing,
I can't do this alone.
Sing us a song,
a song to keep us warm,
there's such a chill, such a chill.
And you can laugh a spineless laugh,
we hope your rules and wisdom choke you.
And now we are one
in everlasting peace,
we hope that you choke, that you choke,
we hope that you choke, that you choke,
we hope that you choke, that you choke.

SONG INFORMATION
Released:
June 1997
Found on:
OK Computer
While on tour with Alanis Morissette in September of 1996, Radiohead was sent the last half-hour of Baz Luhrmann's film William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and asked to write a song for the closing credits. Band members were impressed by the clip, and Thom wrote this song for the movie. At first he attempted to use lines from Shakespeare's play as lyrics, but finally ditched the idea.
The moment in the film when Claire Danes (Juliet) holds a Colt 45 to her head was the actual inspiration for "Exit Music." Thom also had the 1968 version of the film in his head: "I saw the Zeffirelli version when I was 13 and I cried my eyes out, because I couldn't understand why, the morning after they shagged, they didn't just run away. The song is written for two people who should run away before all the bad stuff starts. A personal song."

Here is a song that is fairly sad and depressing, I don't know if it is more depressing then Smalltown Boy, but it is still sad but beautiful at the same time. It's called "Tears In Heaven" by Eric Clapton. He wrote it after his son (whom I think his name was Cole but I could be wrong about that) accidently fell out of the window of their appartment building when he was 4 years old.
Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven
Would you hold my hand if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand if I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven
Time can bring you down; time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please
Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven
Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven
'Cause I know I don't belong, here in heaven

Good, somber synth-pop tune. Too bad Bronski Beat didn't do anything else worthwhile.

Disagree. Try:
Why?
I Feel Love (Love To Love You Baby)
Ain't Necessarily So
Hit That Perfect Beat (with Jon-Boy Jon)
All UK chart hits....

Good input. I wouldn't say that they are any sadder than 'Smalltown Boy' though, they just deal with slightly different issues....one deals with they everyday occurance of unspeakable hardship and suffering of a Mother and child that goes unnoticed, and the other deals with the isolation and inner despair of a young person who has yet to discover true love and compassion.

I have the Age of Consent LP and don't care for anything besides Smalltown Boy and Hit That Perfect Beat (which I neglected in my original post)

Why?
I thought Why? was their best single
I have fond memories of hearing that on the radio all the time when I was little

I was introduced to The Bronski Beat just before "Smalltown Boy" was out.
Jimmy Sommerville did indeed have a high falsetto...before he jumped ship to form the Communards.
Jon Jon was a better replacement. I have the tape of "Truthdare Doubledare", which features "Hit That Perfect Beat", as well as the title track. I like the Bornski Beat...wish I'd hear more of them.
As for sadder songs, here is my contribution:
"No Son Of Mine", by Genesis.
For me, it hits home all to clear.
You see, I haven't seen my father in about 28 yrs.
I had a dream that would never see him again. I lived in Ohio, @ the time, w/my grandparents.
I called him @ 2 a.m., and told him my dream. He said he'd come get me that Saturday. That was the last I ever heard or saw of him.
I never really had a strong father figure in my life, and the one man who was supposed to be, betrayed everything I was ever taught, when he divorced my mother.
To this day, there are things I can't do w/my own daughter, because of him.
Things I can't teach her, songs I can't sing to her, dreams I can only hope she'll find on her own.
I am being the best father I can be, and whatever mistakes I make, I'll pay for, in the end of things.

"Smalltown Boy" is an awesome song, possibly one of the best songs of the 80's. Another good song by the Bronski Beat is "C'mon, C'mon" fun, upbeat, catchy. As far as sad lyrics go there is a song by an Australian artist from the early 90's, called 'the day you went away':
why
after this long is there nothing I'll keep
oh I can shout
you'll pretend you're falling asleep
I live a lie
yeah
believing that you're mine
it's just a waste of time
coz you're leaving me behind
hey there's not a cloud in the sky
it's as blue as your goodbye
and I thought that it would rain
on a day like today
I guess the lyrics weren't as sad as I thought, but seriously, find the video on youtube or something it is the saddest song, it is about an old couple and one has died and the other is pining for them.
