Subject: New Waveness of Non-New Wave '80s Artists

Written By: velvetoneo on 07/06/06 at 2:06 pm

What "non-new wave artists" do you think dabbled in new wave or had significant new wave influences?

I'll start with two of my favorites:

Kate Bush-Kate definitely was new wave influenced c. 1985, with the Hounds of Love album, her most commercially successful in the U.S. The soundscapes on songs like "Mother Stands for Comfort", "Watching You Without Me", "The Big Sky", "Running Up That Hill", "Hounds of Love" etc. are sort of a "prog-wave."
Prince-Prince went through a "new wave period" c. 1980, with the Dirty Mind album, which is essentially a very funky new wave (though a song like "When You Were Mine" isn't that different from Culture Club.)

George Michael?

George Michael?

I think that George Michael started out as sort of "pop-wave" and became generic late '80s soul-influenced pop, though a song like "Faith" is sort of Culture Club/Squeeze-y.

Would you put Duran Duran in the same category as Wham, Culture Club, and Pet Shop Boys?

Nah. Wham! is teen pop, Culture Club is blue-eyed soul influenced New Romantic pop, Pet Shop Boys is '80sesque disco. Duran Duran is teen poppish new wave...
