Am I nuts or weren't there Hello Kitty/Sanrio pencil cases that had button you could press and the pencil sharpener or eraser compartment would pop out? I can't find them anywhere.

This sounds very familiar so I'll say yes. I think a lot of pencil cases had features like that though.
My sister was going on about pocket Sanrio mini playsets (like Polly Pocket but not). Can't find those anywhere either. I think they were Little Twin Star.

You're presuming that only girls collected hello kitty pencil cases...

Yes, but when I was in 4th grade, only the girls had them. At least at my school.
