Subject: Early, mid, and late 80s

Written By: BFM on 06/14/06 at 5:12 pm

Will we have asked the difference between the early and late 80s but we are asking what years are the early 80s, what years are the mid 80s, and what years are the late 80s. Please tell what you think.

Literally:

Early '80s: 1980-1982
Mid '80s: 1983-1986
Late '80s: 1987-1989

Culturally:

Early '80s: Fall 1979 - Summer 1983
Mid '80s: Fall 1983 - Summer 1986
Late '80s: Fall 1986 - Summer 1991

Agreed...

Though you could definitely say Fall 1979-Late 1980 belonged to the late '70s as well. I mean, songs like "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc. came out then. And the late '80s after mid-1988 were '80s in terms of things overall, but had certain quite '90s attitudes and pop cultural elements.

Quite simple, really:

EARLY- Dec. 1979- Nov. 1983
MID- Dec. 1983- Nov. 1986
LATE- Dec. 1986- Dec. 1989

NON-'80s- Jan. 1990 forward; Nov. 1979 back.
PARROT: Still dead.

Why is December 1979 '80s, and not January 1990?  ;D

Well summed up Donnie.  An important point to note was that also in my opinion cuturally speaking, the 80's didn't fully end until 1991.

The early '80s was kinda distinguishable from the rest of the '80s because of the music and women's fashion. Both were still pretty much '70s influenced. I thought the fashion back then was drab. Just watch old episodes of Hill Street Blues, Eight Is Enough and Charlie's Angels. Look at what Mindy's wearing in Mork And Mindy!

For me anyway, 1983 saw noticeable changes, and the flashy '80s clothes we've come to know became popular.

I think 1990, and even 1991 are actually part of the "Eighties" in a way.  The real '90s didn't begin until fall of 1991, or even as late as summer of 1992.

Interesting to see how close everyone is on this, especially as that's pretty much my feel for it too.  You think how many places and phases we were in it's pretty amazing how much it looked and felt the same.
