Subject: Stewart and Gaskin - It's My Party

Written By: whistledog on 06/12/06 at 11:23 am

Does anyone remember Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin?

They were a British DUO who scored a massive hit in late 1981 / Early 1982 with a new wave cover of the Lesley Gore classic "It's My Party".  The track went to #1 in the UK, #13 in Canada, and #72 in the USA

In the music video, Thomas Dolby plays the role of Johnny

To be honest, that's a really awful cover but a typical effort by Dave Stewart (from Eurythmics).

Actually, that is a different Dave Stewart.  I used to get confused too.  The one from Eurythmics credits himself as David A. Stewart to avoid confusion :)

Well what d'ya know? Thanks for the heads up, Jason. It certainly sounds like something the Eurythmics guy would attempt.

It's a good cover that was a big hit in the uk also.

The cover is just SO 80's it's untrue, a sort of 'Japanese Boy meets Rocky'  :D

As cover versions go...it was 'different'!

They released quite a few efforts throughout the 80s, but none of them were as successful as this...

Prior to 'Party', Dave also had a hit with 'What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted' with ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone...the voice was impeccable as ever, but the thing as a whole 'lacked' a certain something...

Good spot, I liked 'What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted'...it had that trademark Stewart keyboard sound. And let's not forget the other single 'Busy Doing Nothing' which was also highly peculiar! ;D

Ah, yes! I vaguely remember that!

I had a quick browse of their discography and was amazed to discover that they even attacked 'The Siamese Cat Song' (from Disney's 'Lady & The Tramp!)

My curiosity's been stirred up now! I must see if I can find this!

Yes, of course I remember! I'm sure I have the 7" somewhere... but with my record player still broken... :\'(

btw: it went to #20 in Dutch Top 40.

The two of them also recorded "I'm In A Different World" and "The Locomotion" (and maybe more that I'm not aware of), but those two songs got stuck in bubbling under section.

Colin Blunstone was also lead vocalist with the Alan Parsons Project.

I still love this song.  It's so different from the Lesley Gore version and not just because it was a different era / different sound.  The song starts off slow, then builds up to a faster chorus in the end.  Still one of my favourite cover songs ever!
