Subject: That "Paula Abdul" Sort of Music
Written By: velvetoneo on 06/04/06 at 6:28 pm
I'm not quite sure what to call this sort of music...it's one of those things peculiar to the second half of the late '80s, like mid 1988-mid 1991, and it really became completely uncool by 1993. It's "cheesy dance music" including bands like Color Me Badd, M.C. Hammer, Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul, and Jody Watley (the first of this genre, having debuted early in 1987.) It's sort of a mix of a more '90s-esque urban dance-pop sound with '80s cheesiness that's the most distinctive music of that era.

Reminds me of these songs . . .
'Tell it to my heart' - Taylor Dayne
'Who's leaving who' - Hazell Dean
'Rush hour' - Jane Wiedlin
'Roses are red' - Mac Band feat. The McCampbell Brothers
'Toy boy'/'Cross my broken heart' - Sinitta
'Boys (summertime love)' - Sabrina
I love all these songs but have that quality you mention.

How about "Always Too Hot" by Alanis? (Before she added her last name to her name in the '90s) And "Heaven is a Place on Earth" by Belinda Carisle.
