Bands like Devo and songs like "The Safety Dance" are extremely sarcastic, if you pay attention. Real new wave bands were incredibly satirical of popular culture and materialism, and did this by dressing in ultra-campy clothing and making over-the-top, super-processed music.

Absolutely. That was more than half the fun. I came out of a hippie commune/drop-out state of mind and looked around, and these were the only socially active participants who seemed to have any idea what was really going on. I found the over-the-top costumes and stagey make-up and theatrical performances a perfect counterpoint to where I had come from, and it didn't hurt that I really liked the music. Dig past all that and there is the written message. Listen to Elvis Costello and Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel, Crowded House and the Smiths. Writers and thinkers and communicators all. What a great time to be your own production.

What a lot of people didn't/don't realize are those bands actually meant to look stupid. A lot of the humor went over peoples' heads.
