I would say either Tears for Fears or New Order.

Maybe the Smiths...their lyrics were always different.

So many people underestimate my favorite band, but I have to say The Tubes.
Each song was different. If the subject was similar, they sneeringly parodied themselves, and the audiences LOVED it.
Besides, they have 3 claims to fame that no other band has!

Tubes were great.
Many of the British bands/artists of the time had great lyrics, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Squeeze all had the abilty to 'turn a phrase' Talking Heads had great if difficult lyrics too....you may ask youself how did I get here?

Definitely Talking Head and Elvis Costello. Not much better since. What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

Another great lyrics band is Cheap Trick.
There are 4 specific examples of the greatness of the quirky Rick Nielsen:
-The Clock Struck Ten
-Woke Up With A Monster
-Auf Wiedersein (sp?)
-The Dream Police
"Have you seen her face? She's got a face that would stop a clock..."
