Subject: The Tubes- A Band Of All Ages- Where Do They Stand With You?
Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 05/20/06 at 5:21 am
OK, gang. Those who know me know that I am a MAJOR Tubes fanatic!
There are many songs, which the Tubes have made famous, from 1975-now.
Which song/album/band member do you like best, and why???
(Hey, you've done Madonna & Prince; why not The Tubes?!?!?)

I guess I'll start:
I met The Tubes December 27, 2003, after a concert where I live.
Fee Waybill (lead singer) and I had met via the radio 2 yrs. prior to that, when I called into "Saturday Night '80s"- a radio show out of Valencia, CA. hosted by Todd Baker.
Their show was more outrageous than I ever expected!
It was bitchin' extreme!
My favorite song is either "Sushi Girl", "Mr. Hate", or "She's A Beauty".
-C'mon, this thread will NOT DIE off, until I see some response, here!

The Tubes were a great band but sometimes I felt their music was cluttered (as if too much was going on). Monkey Time and She's a Beauty stand out.

"She's A Beauty" was by far their biggest release. I enjoy it also, even if it's not my otp pick.
"Monkey Time"- That was actually a cover of a song done in the early '70s.
"Don't touch Me There"- there's a great bit they did for the stage show on this, although I would have preferred to see a female for this instead of Fee dressed in drag!
All the same, it's a great bit.
Other songs that hit greatly, and are underestimated in my opinion, are:
-Theme Park
-Amnesia
-TV Is King
-Mondo Bondage (it's that dark & sleazy side of R'n'R that appeals to me.)
-Loveline (all about the Internet!!!)
There are more, but these are my particular faves!

I only really liked "Don't Want to Wait Anymore", "She's A Beauty" and the album only track "Wooly Bully/Theme From A Summer Place"

How about that deal they did, in "Xanadu"? That was kind of a cool integration they did, between the 2 numbers.

A sad note for this illustrious band happened on June 2nd-
Original keyboardist Vince "The Red Wave" Welnick, known for his copper-red hair, fantastic piano skills, and extraordinary howling onstage, died at age 55.
Causes are not fully made known to the public as of yet, but I know he was not in the best of shape in the last few yrs. of his life.
His work with The Tubes, as well as his own band- The Missing Man Project, and also the Grateful Dead, were some of the most unique in the rock world, and he will be sorely missed.
Anyone wishing to find out more, or to send condolences to his wife Lori, can do so at www.vincewelnick.com

I've just re-visited and re-burnt the Completion Backwards Principle and Outside Inside.
Great Power Pop and you know David Foster was a really good producer before Ann Murray and Celine Dion.

That was the song Dancin`, and is actually one of my favorites. It shows how 2 groups 30 years apart can talk about the same thing, but in a totally different way.
There was another similar song made by ONJ called "Fool Country", which combined the New York Punk sound (Debra Harry), and Country that was called "Fool Country". That one is almost impossible to find, since it was not released on the soundtrack. It was released as the B side of a 45 from the movie, along with a few other songs that were not on the album.

The Tubes were also involved with a TV special that Cher hosted.
(Sparked a brief rumor about Cher & Fee Waybill having a one-night stand.)
The Tubes also did "Sushi girl" on SCTV's 'Fishin' Musician' skit, and were accepted quite readily.
At one of the Super Bowls, the Tubes were the main Halftime act. They performed "Sports Fans".
So, really, they were more influential than ppl realize.

The first time I had heard of "The Tubes" was on "America's Top 10" with Casey Kasem. 'She's a Beauty" debuted in the Top 10, and they played the video. ( Later I found out they did "Dancin'" from "Xanadu" , one of my favorite songs at age 6. My family and I waited in line for 2 hours to see the movie on opening night.)
On MTV's "Closet Classics" (remember that show??? anyone? anyone?) they used to play "Prime Time". That was a great video, a TV explodes and a lady pops out of it. Then, "Prime Time" became one of my favorite songs.

Other songs that The Tubes did, which were all underrated, were "Mr. Hate", "TV Is King", the ever-infamous "What Do You Want From Life?", and one of my personal favorites- "White Punks On Dope", which actually got remade into "White Dopes On Punk".

At one point in 1983 or '84, Fee Waybill hosted a Saturday Night music video show.
He was the main VJ for it, until he left & was replaced by a truly awful host.
I actually miss those days...he played some of the best vids on there!
Yes, the 1980s were a fabulous time to be alive!
