I think even 1966 is a little bit too old for the brat pack thing.
Late 1963-Mid 1966: Early Gen X, the Hall & Oates generation.
Late 1966-Mid 1972: Da Brat Pack (Late 1967-Mid 1970 is the very brat pack group.)
Late 1972-Mid 1975: '80s/'90s Transitional People...the Saved by the Bell/Vanilla Ice generation.
Late 1975-Mid 1981: The '90s generation, about which 77-78 is the peak of. The end is definitely transitional.

I'd tweak this by putting late 1976 in with the Saved by the bell/Vanilla Ice generation. I was a teen at the end of the 80s, and put Early 1977 with the 90s generation as well.
1966 is the right time for the Bratpack b/c many of them are already in their forties.

I agree with this more, though. I was a latchkey kid definitely!

I think a Gen Xer would have to see Star Wars in theatres ... or at least one of them.
Did you see the 1997 edition of SW in theaters? I did.

You know I forgot...may have. But the first time I saw SW was when I was about 5-6 - never thought much of it til I was about 13 when the Phantom Menace came out. For about a year I was a total Star Wars junkie, reading the novels, watching the movies as much as possible, reading the back-histories.etc.

Didn't Star Wars seem to be hot in the '90s? It seems in the latter '80s it was kind of forgotten about.

I reckon Donnie's first year groupings were more accurate, especially his latchkey 72-77. Why latchkey I'm not too sure... my Mum was always home... ;D

Possibly. Wasn't really old enough in the late 80s to know. I think the novels, rumours of a second series, and of course the digitally re-mastered trilogy had something to do with it. Can never remember a time it was any less popular than it is now, after the hype of the second trilogy.

I think the second trilogy hardly even counts, to be honest.

It WAS a dissapointment, even to non-diehards.

I though the LOTR movies didn't live up to the books either. Although personally I'm more of a Silmarillion fan.

What other fantasy fiction have you read/enjoy?

Actually LOTR's about it.

LOTR is good, but so well known it sort of overshadows everything else. I may be quatered for this, but there is 'better' stuff out there. I haven't been reading fantasy for long, (didn't really like it before, but now I'm a convert), but now I'm really into it.

Name some please :)
I used to be OBSESSED with LOTR ... but my decade obsession has kind of taken its place.

Then how come you don't have some LOTR handle like Gandalf4Eva, or FrodoRulz16... ;D
Authors like Ursula LeGuin, Stephen Donaldson, David Eddings, Eddison, Mervin Peake, Barbara Hamley...Too many to list, check out this site http://www.chronicles-network.com. Alot of good stuff to check out. Join the forums if you like, I'm a member. :)

Actually Feanor, my favorite Tolkien character, is one of my many, many, aliases. But since I'm not such a Tolkien nut I don't use it as much.

I would love to read Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy someday. I've seen parts of the television adaptation, but have never watched it long enough to get a grasp of the story. Seems pretty weird though.
As for Star Wars, I had an obsessive fan-boy phase with it back when I was in Grade 5 (1993-94). I remember getting excited about the earliest rumours of a new trilogy back then -- I first heard about the possibility on a segment of Entertainment Tonight -- but by the time The Phantom Menace arrived in theatres I had mostly lost interest. I still got around to watching it eventually, but it bored me out of my wits completely and I hated the juvenile humour and gratuitous lightsabre fights. Pretty disappointing overall.... I've heard that the most recent one -- Revenge of the Sith -- isn't bad though.
I think that Star Wars was still decently popular in the late '80s, though I can't really say for sure. At least, I owned some of the action figures and probably saw the movies (or at least Return of the Jedi) for the first time back then.

Revised Version:
1965-Mid 1966: Early Gen X.
Late 1966-Mid 1972: El Brat Pack.
Late 1972-Mid/Late 1976: Saved by the Bell/Nirvana/Berlin Wall Generation.
Late 1976-Mid 1980 (COA about 1993-1996, the "golden '90s"): The '90s subgeneration.

I saw "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" in theaters during their original runs.

I think it depends on your school district. Like if your class is Sept. 1976-Aug. 1977 like it is around here, I think they're more '90s-type Gen X. Maybe 1976 is a crossover year.
Some generation names:
Late 1944-Mid 1947: The Camelot Generation
Late 1947-Mid 1953: The Summer of Love/Vietnam/Great Society Generation
Late 1953-Mid 1959: The Watergate/Kent State/Oil Crisis Generation
Late 1959-Mid 1963: The Disco/Carter Generation
Late 1963-Mid 1966: The Iranian Hostage Crisis Generation
Late 1966-Mid 1972: The Brat Pack (The John Hughes/Reagan Generation)
Late 1972-Mid 1976: The Berlin Wall/"Saved by the Bell" Generation
Late 1975-Mid 1981: The Clinton Generation
Late 1981-Mid 1985: The Y2K Generation
Late 1985-Mid 1990: The 9/11 Generation/Generation Dubya
Late 1990-Mid 1995: (As yet unnamed, has anything exactly defined them? If there's a real estate crash, it will)
There's some definite crossover in here...like I included 1976 twice.
