I'm kind of digging "Like a Virgin" right now. Really catchy song.

What an unfair question, lol.
Hmmmm . . . Probably a toss-up between 'Live to tell' and 'open your heart' . . . probably.

I'll say this ... I don't Madonna is a talented musician. She is a talented celebrity, and is musically good because of production.

She's more of a singer than a musician. Madonna knows how to use the media to her advantage . . . However, I think her music is awful now. I can't help it, it sucks as you Americans say.

Too many to choose just one. I've always liked "Like a Prayer", "Crazy for You", "Live To Tell" and "La Isla Bonita".

I like all of her songs, so I'm going to vote for Sidewalk Talk. She wrote it, and sang it, and it was a BIG hit in 1985, but she gave credit to producer/instrumentalist John 'Jellybean' Benitez

Definitely "Open Your Heart" followed by "Like a Prayer"... :)

Madonna is a great songwriter, producer, concept artist, etc. People always tried to accuse her of being a producer's tool, but "Like a Virgin" is one of the few songs she didn't conceive that became a hit.
"Like a Prayer" is my all-time favorite, but I love all of 'em.

I thought most of Madonna's 80s stuff was written mainly by paid songwriters, but I may be wrong.
I like 'Like A Virgin', 'Material Girl'...er, that's about all I've heard.

I love Like a Prayer. I heard an acoustic version of this by the guy I understood to have written it and it was so good it gave me goosebumps, sadly I can't recall his name. :(

Yeah, you're definitely wrong. In fact, the only hits she had that weren't written by her are "like a virgin" and "material girl"... she wrote the others... oh, and "holiday". but think of songs like "papa dont' preach" "open your heart" "live to tell" "lucky star" "borderline" "like a prayer" "express yourself" "who's that girl" "cherish" "causing a commotion" "into the groove"... she wrote all of them. she's a true talent and has a gift for writing great pop music - even to this day.

In that case my regard for her as increased. How can anyone compare her to Britney? *shakes head*

Oh, she's (IMO) definitely more talented and has better music than Britney (although "Sometimes" is a guilty pleasure fave), but you've gotta admit, 1984 Madonna and 1999 Britney sort of had a similar audience and pop sound - respective to each time period.

Oh, and if I had to pick one single song, probably "Borderline" (the hit single/video mix version), although "Lucky Star" is right up there too. Late 1983-85 was sort of her "cute pop" period, if that makes sense. "Live to Tell" is her best ballad, though.

Yeah, c. 1984 (the peak of the '80s), Madonna was sort of a sexy "cute pop" queen, though with a more complex image and a much more intriguing person than say Britney. This was the period of the c. 1985 Madonna clones, who were teen girls who dressed exactly like her. She grew out of that to become a mature superstar by 1986, with "Open Your Heart", "Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue", etc., which were artistically complicated concept songs that went hand in hand with her video. She's one of the real consumnate "performer rock stars", along with greats like Prince, MJ, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Diana Ross, etc.
Even in 1984, she was much more of an interesting and sophisticated sort of persona than Britney Spears..."Like a Virgin" is a great, clever song, as opposed to something like "Baby One More Time", and "Material Girl" is a comment upon the Reaganite '80s.
Trimac, how can you NOT have heard "Like a Prayer"? If you haven't heard it, your whole opinion of Madonna will be changed. I actually recommend buying the album, it's essential, and I think along with Thriller and Purple Rain it forms the triad of '80s pop masterpieces.
It makes sense that you would like her first album singles, since you're a new wave fan. Her first two albums are very pop-wave (sort of similar to Cyndi Lauper or Haircut 100 or Culture Club), but more interesting and much more "black" and disco, and 1986-1993 her music was post-wave and branched out into endless avenues like gospel, R&B, Motown-style soul, big band, cheesy ballad, disco, Latin, etc., though it was all very Madonna and very creative.
I think that Britney took alot off of Madonna's c. 1984 image and to a degree her sound, but it's a very dumbed-down and less interesting sort of way of doing it.

Has to be Gambler (VisionQuest Soundtrack) and Burning Up. Dress You Up, especially the live version, a close third.

"Get Into the Groove," because Susann Seidelman used it in (the only good) Madonna movie, "Desperately Seeking Susan."
"Like A Prayer" is my second choice.

Like a Prayer
I can't stand the remix of the song from the Immaculate Collection. The album version (written/arranged by Patrick Leonard) with it's funky bass and electric guitars is a power pop classic, the crowning song of Madonna's career.
Other favs-
Live to Tell
Dress You Up
Who's That Girl

Yeah, 1992 was her jump year, trying to be even more explicit/hip-hop focused and '90s and failing. Even though Erotica was just mediocre, it wasn't as awful as it's sometimes made out to be. Prince fell down the same road.

Yes, this was definitely the lowest point of her career, and she was highly criticized in the media after the book debacle erupted. But, like the true phoenix she is, she picked herself up and made a triumphant return with the success of Bedtime Stories...

Though I would say "Justify My Love" since her music was getting worse
The only Madonna song in the '90's I don't mind is "Vogue"

I thought "Sex" was published in 1990. All I remember is the publishers were tyring to gouge customers for $50 a pop, as if it was one of those slick monographs by a controversial photographer (eg. Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Jock Sturges), but the camera work, subjects, and composition were totally half-assed (no pun intended) and the book itself was printed on cheapie-cheap paperstock and so poorly bound it started fall apart as soon you thumbed through it! Mind you, I didn't buy one, but I did see my friend's copy.
Vogue was a catchy song, but it was like, "oh, so you have to look like a movie star to be 'vogue,' well, 'scuse me for not being rich and beautiful there, Maddie!"
Nobody should have fronted Prince the bucks to make more movies! Purple Rain was cheesy, but it was Prince's favorite subject, Prince, and he had a big enough fan base who wanted to see his life's story, though it was less autobiography and more ego-biography. The Prince song I really despised was "Diamonds & Pearls," because it was sooooo overplayed. It's simple to pinpoint when Prince really "jumped-the-shark," right here:

I wonder if Sex is still on sale anywhere, actually. I think Madonna was overexposed at that point. I know she says that she "just thought that if she totally exposed herself, people would stop caring", but it's probably more like that she miscalculated the public's taste for controversy. Before, her controversial side was more clever and subtle (the "Like a Prayer" video, for example), but soft porn it was not. I've seen the "unedited" "Erotica" single video, and it's crap...the "Justify My Love" video is sort of soft-porn style, but it's much more artful and sort of reminds me of that late '80s industrial look that was in vogue then, or 1920s Weimar Germany.
I think Prince tried to get into hip-hop after alienating his audience by the time of Graffitti Bridge, his movies getting progressively terrible and with worse soundtracks. Then, he went through an identity crisis and became The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. I've often heard Prince was like THE coolest artist of the '80s...my drama club advisor, who I think is about your age, went home and watched Purple Rain on VHS every day when he was in high school in the mid-'80s.
