I'd have to say DEVO.

I agree, DEVO were very nerdy. Though They Might Be Giants are a late '80s nerdy band, along with Camper Van Beethoven.

The Scandinavian countries, for continental European countries, have had some of the most successful US rock and pop crossovers, with the success of ABBA, a-ha, Aqua, black metal, etc. Germany has also had a few successful groups (Rammstein, Kraftwerk, Cascada, Can, Tangerine Dream, Modern Talking), but other European countries have had very few.

Devo to me takes the prize on that one. I hate to say it I thought The Cars were the nerdy/geeky guys when I was young. Ric Ocasek certainly wasnt good-looking to me. Now I see why average to below average guys join or form bands. lol ;D

They sure looked like A-class nerds in the 'Whip It' video clip, with those weird pyramind hats and glasses (if I remember correctly). Oddly I don't consider that song THAT nerdy...cheesy, yes, but not as nerdy as some other 80s songs.

They are pretty nerdy...I'd also say Buddy Holly, but he obviously wasn't 80s...

OMD (pre-1984) always struck me as a couple of blokes you'd find working in your local bank!

Time for some input, here, also!
You have named some true "nerd" bands- Devo, Flock Of Seagulls, The Proclaimers...even though they were '90s!...and others.
However, being an avid student/fan/musical slave to the 1980s musical lifestyle, there is one that I must say tops them all.
There is a band I saw only once, on a video called "URGH!- A Music War", which came out in 1981.
It featured 36 bands, and this is the only one I failed to see the point behind...Invisible Sex.
All of the band members dressed identical: They looked kinda like body condoms, with silver tape face masks on them, to "hide" who was who. Their stage names were rather substandard: Gene Yus, Gene Etic, etc. They played worse than air guitars, which at least was condoneable then: they played crappy guitars made of crudely painted cardboard, and threw Hershey's Kisses at the audience.
Their musical selection for the film was rather atrocious, in the sense that it was tough to discern what they're saying. The worst part about it is at the end of their act, they proclaimed, "We know we're the best, and we know you want us! But what will you get???" (Thank GOD that was left off the film- I found that bit out, by checking with a friend of mine, who was THERE at that concert!)
There's my vote- Invisible Sex. http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/10/uhoh.gif

Yeeeaah! Especially Paul Reynolds, skinny kid with cokebottle glasses. Great guitar player, the real talent in the band.

OMD anytime! Did you ever take a gander at the adjunct members of that band?

How about Blancmange?

These groups were in a genre I called "nerd rock." That was part of its appeal to me. A big part of how an adolescent relates to pop music is whether or not he "identifies" with the band. All those sweaty long-haired cock-rock bands flailing about in spandex and tattoos whilst humping out power chords said nothing to me! "Nerd rock" was anything but a derogatory term as far as I was concerned.
