Subject: Madonna - a Cyndi Lauper ripoff?
Written By: Donnie Darko on 05/02/06 at 5:10 am
Does anyone think Madonna's a Cyndi ripoff? It seems sort of like Madonna's sexiness beat Cyndi's goofiness. Sort of a shame; I think Cyndi's a better musician.

I sense this thread is aimed at a specific member - a fanatical Madonna fan, with the express purpose of ruffling said members boa feathers up.

well if you're speaking about me then you're correct.
Madonna is a better musician. Cyndi has a better voice but she's a weirdo. Madonna is still around because she deserves to be. She didn't copy off anyone - she is an original. Thank you.

I(as a non fan of either) see them as talented in different ways. Madonna was much more savvy, obviously.

Not totally...
They came from different camps (Madge was more 'disco' oriented than Cyndi was), but the problems started when their careers took off almost simultaneously, leading to sometimes unfair comparisons...
IIRC, Cyndi won the first battle when she scooped the Grammy for best newcomer in 1984...
...but then she made the fatal mistake of not recording her follow-up quick enough. Madge, of course, struck whilst the iron was hot and enjoyed a run of unprecedented success the following year and beyond...
That was then...
Whatever they're recording now (or who's ripping off who) doesn't bother me one iota...

This thread is pointless ::). Madonna's first album came out before Cyndi's and they both cater to different camps. So to say that Madonna is a Cyndi rip-off is just way off.

Besides, from what I've last saw of her, Cyndi has mellowed quite a bit! ;D
Madonna is...well, what can we say, she Madonna!

Madonna is the consummate performer/brand-image...she's so enduring because her appeal is so wide and she's so ubiquitous; just like Elton John. Though even I have to say suave marketing has got her along way. I've never really looked closely at her as an artist, more as an etertainer/celebrity.

I agree, too. I always took Cyndi to be a cheap, younger version of Madonna, until I realised she was 6 years older than her :o
I like some of Cyndi Lauper's stuff, but sometimes her voice aggravates me more. Madonna may not be a great singer, but she doesn't sound mousy either.

I must agree with you.
Madonna gravitated towards sex; whereas Cyndi was more girl-power before the dawn of the Spice Girls!

Yeah, there's something kind of cheesy about Cyndi. But her voice is ... cute I guess.
Although for Madonna's credit, she's definitely a smarter businesswoman, and better at being a celebrity. Plus some of her music is good .. I just downloaded Like a Virgin last night (actually early this morning).

Yeah, I guess that's the part I like about Madonna because she's more sensual. Her music is also more playable because it can fit a number of moods you may be in, as in Lauper's music can lean towards being a bit "too much" pop.

You were referring to me, I'm guessing, since I'm a fanatical Madonna fan...and have boa feathers in my image...or something... ;)
Well, they came out of the same scene at the same time. Both were floating around NYC in the post-punk flutter of 1981 and added the look to their new wave-y/Motown and black soul combo. Maybe Madonna and Cyndi Lauper both ripped each other off a little, who knows...but Madonna graduated from that look to innumerable looks, while Cyndi Lauper stayed stuck in 1984. Cyndi Lauper had three-five great songs, Madonna's had dozens of innovative mega-hits.
They were definitely head to head at the peak of the '80s, but Madonna won the battle. She was a true celebrity with appeal beyond being an "'80s" thing like Cyndi Lauper was, and had some of the most original presence of any pop star yet. I read an interview with Cyndi Lauper that asked the invevitable question ("Are you pissed at Madonna?"), and she said she was never that interested in the fame game. She's not unhappy because she wasn't that interested in aggressively pursuing fame. Cyndi was cute and very, very campy, schticky, early '80s; Madonna went against the shtick/camp culture to a sort of postmodern, ahead of her time view, like Prince or the Beatles. And Madonna isn't a bad singer, Cyndi's technically the better singer, but all-around (looks, presence, design of live shows, etc.) Madonna's the ultimate. And Madonna's an excellent songwriter/choreographer/performer/overall "artiste", I think. There was a sexuality and precociousness, a captivation about the early Madonna that beat out Cindy. But Madonna's admittedly a bitch; I don't think she'd hesitate to rip off Cyndi, though it's possible she did. Or maybe there's a third NYC party they both ripped off.

Yes, good guess...lol
I think Madonna's 'saviness' could be interpreted as 'bitchiness', and it's a sad fact to get to the top, often for someone like her, one has to climb over a whole heap of people. Even if you have a whole lot of talent, the music industry is, and has always been a tough place.

When I was a little kid back in 1983 and 1984, I used to think they were sisters or something.
Cyndi Lauper was looked at as fun and entertaining, yet ultimately campy. While Madonna was always seen as the cooler one.

That's funny, they are pretty similar.
What was I going to say? Well, it's two hound dogs, not boa feathers, in my avatar, actually.

That's right. They just happened to collide at the same time. The 80s would be a totally different place without either of them.

I love them both, though I'm still much more of a Madonna fan. She owns me, I'm afraid. I'm going to see her in August in Wembley Arena on her Confessions tour and I can't wait. It's not only my first time seeing Madonna live, but my first time going to any real concert. Even though I'm near the back and won't really see her aside from on the screens, I'm ridiculously excited.
Hopefully I'll get to see Cyndi one day, too.

Have a good time at the concert, Chipette. 8)

On closer inspection they are indeed hound dogs...I hope they're still living, breathing, slobbering hound dogs! ;)

I enjoyed both artists in the early 80s, as the previous thread said Madonna was more business savy. That's why she's still immensely popuar. Certainly each one had their own creative syle but Cyndi Lauper just had a certain goofy charm about her. I dont think she sexually appealing to men too much and she wanted to remain the girl next door. Personally she lost her credibility with met when she associated herself with WWF.

Cyndi Lauper looked too awkward to be sexually appealing though she did have an odd early 80s charm about her.
Yes, she got involved with the 'Rock 'n' Wrestling connection' as it was called. It paid off for her short-term though I think she should have got off the wrestling angle when 'Good enough' came out. If you saw the video, she was trying to combine the wrestling elements (Nikolai Volkoff, Roddy Piper, Iron Sheik and Freddie Blassie all embarrassing themselves as property developers) and the Goonies element (wandering in caves) - it just didn't work (besides the music video was split into two - not usually a good idea for a movie soundtrack).
